First time fleet enema, did I do it right? Was very constipated...

So I just took a fleet enema for the first time because I was very constipated. I held it in and it almost immediately caused me to have bowel movement. I figured that because of this I let go of the enema too soon so I injected a few more times but after nothing really came out except for the enema itself.
I am experiencing rectal stinging/ discomfort after taking it almost an hour ago. When will the pain subside? Did I take this medication incorrectly? How am I supposed to use it?
just a note to you, do not use thee fleets enemas unless you really have too, go on line and buy yer self a reg old fashion enema type of unit, lots of places on the net were you can get them, and just use about 2 qts of plain tap water for yer enema, the fleets enemas you are using have 3 dif types of chemicals in them, yes its ok for maby a few times a yr and they really do not get all that bad stuff out of you, you do need the 2 qt warm water enemas with a bulb or a bag to get it done the right way...

That's fair advice but 2qts can be too much for someone who's never had a lg vol. enema, or even those who have I would suggest using 1qt, given very slowly, hanging the container no more than 18 in above the level of the hips. Stop the flow as often as necessary. Try to hold the water as long as you can. 10-15 min if possible, but at least 5.

The saline enemas are really no more than a liquid suppository. I suffered from chronic constipation fm abt ages 10 to 16. At first, glycerine or soapstick suppositories did the trick but they lost effectiveness at abt age 12. We began to use enemas then. Being a stubborn kid, by the time I said anything, It took several large enemas to clean me out. We finally figured if I was given 2 1 qt enemas, 1 w soap, one not. Nearly every Sat. That I had few probs. Except having to have the occaisional warm olive oil enema when packed, Had to have that done to me for abt 2 yrs, then I guess I kinda grew out of it, till now at age 50, I came down w MS, and now more bowel trouble. Just yesterday, the clinic gave me a Fleet and a Liter soap sud enema, and I still am not clear. Might have to co back.

I understand this. Due to my MS, I cannot effectively give myself enemas. If I get to that point, my insurance co advises me to go to the ER to have it done.
It's a bit embarrassing, but less so than if I put it off and have to be disempacted, less painful too. And since my hmo doesn't seem to mind paying $800 for an enema, I go when absolutely necessary only

Hope this helps someone- today when I tried to go i was suddenly in excrutiating pain- cramps, nausea, intestine soreness and so on for several hours, and i was unable to pass anything at all, i had to leave work sick and couldnt even drive to the pharmacy, but i eventually got a kroger brand ready to use saline laxative from walgreens, and it was instant relief. I used the knees to chest position facing down and used about 2/3 the bottle an after a few seconds moved back to the toilet and was able to pass. I instantly felt better and it was only around $3. I find that staying hydrated greatly reduces constipation and trying to pass daily even if you dont think u have to, dont put it off like me.

Ideally you give the full enema, then hold it for as long as you can. It works by pulling fluid into the stool, so retaining it gets a better result. The best position is laying on your left side to do it. I find they work better if you take a laxative the night before. The stinging is because of the electrolytes in the enema fluid. Try rinsing with warm water for a few minutes.

That, and you just put something up in your rectum a few times, so it is bound to sting a bit. Some enemas work by being an "irritant" like soap suds enemas or castile enemas. Fleet though, I think are mainly saline (Salt and water) enemas but I think there are more than one kind of "Fleet" since Fleet is a brand name. I think the "regular" Fleet is saline but I think they also have a mineral oil one and also some kind of an irritant one. If you consider that one, you were very constipated with hard stool, and two, you just pushed something into your rectum (more than once it sounds like), and three, you just passed that hard packed stool, your rectum is bound to sting and feel a little irritated. If it is the anus, the opening that hurts you can put a bit of vaseline on the external portion only to help soothe it. The stinging should go away shortly. It helps to lubricate the tip of the enema each time you insert it. They are supposed to be "prelubricated" but they dont put quite enough on.

I know this is 2 years late... But I use them once a week for personal reasons, you should only use the enema once every 24 hours. Any more times and you can cause harm to your system.
