I started developing minor constipation around week 3. 20% developed this side effect from what I have read. I eat plenty of fiber and drink lots of water. 2-3 days into week four the problem got worse. I've tried OTC medicines, extra fiber supplements, and eating foods that would normally cause immediate results (grapes especially). I decided to stop taking Contrave because of this. It's been 3 days since my last dose. My bowels aren't quite back to normal yet.
Has anyone else had constipation issues and been able to get it resolved and continue on this drug?

I experienced severe constipation a few weeks into taking Contrave. Constipation is not new to me but this level was. I have been drinking about a gallon of water a day for months so don’t think I needed water. Fiber tends to bind me, so not an option. I tried castor oil twice (yuck) but it did not help. Thought about the number of calories I took in and I realized that many days I was well below 1000 calories. I think my working combination is tons of water, more than 1000 calories (mostly protein and veggies), turmeric/cinnamon/ginger in my coffee every morning, and two protein shakes. Have lost nearly 20 pounds and go most days. Good luck.
I’ve had THE WORST CONSTIPATION & STOMACH PAIN EVER. Today makes 3 weeks for me. You name it I tried it. 2 enemas (in one day), suppositories, Phillips (everyday), increase my fiber, and working out. I finally took magnesium citrate and this helped my bowels move but not much because I had bowel obstruction! This medication is AWFUL! Let’s not talk about how nauseous I was and how I couldn’t keep healthy fiber and foods in my body because I would vomit it up. This medication should be given to people who are incontinent of their stools because that’s all it does. Keeps your bowels from not moving. I actually gained weight from being so bloated. I wouldn’t recommend this drug to my enemy.
I've had severe constipation was taking dulcolax every other day and colace still was so severe had me sick was to hard to push out enemas didn't work only helped was drinking bottle of mag citrate every 2-3 days would like to continue using because does help with weight loss but have to really keep up with bowel movements not to get too backed up
I also have this problem. I am taking Miralax and it seems to help
I was googling this same topic and came across your post. I too have suffered from the worst constipation of my life and stomach pain while taking Contrave. The funny thing is I tolerate Wellbutrin fine on it’s own as well as naltrexone. This particular drug does not agree with me. My Doctor does not know why. I think it is an uncommon side effect or people don’t discuss it. After 3 different attempts. I’ve given up.
I found a relatively easy fix: Fish oil 2400mg in the morning and night. Clears it right up, and don’t miss a dose. You will clog back up.
My Dr recommended Miralax. It has helped so much.
I have been with contrave for 6weeks and developed bowel obstruction and have to be in the hospital for 2 days. Have to take stool softener and laxatives and have to stop contrave for now. Will see my doctor next week.
Count me in as someone experiencing severe constipation with Contrave. First, I love the product. It has squashed all of my cravings and I have been able to stick with my diet plan without fail. It's almost too easy.
But the constipation is getting the better of me. I cannot remember the last time I've had a normal bowel movement. I tried the Miralax and it didn't help. I've tried added fiber pills. I'VE done enemas, all to no avail. (I did have a little movement, but not nearly as much as I would imagine. I'm not afraid of a blockage of any sort.)
I'm not in pain, just concerned.
I spoke with the people at Contrave and I will be stepping down the dosage in the hopes that it clears up. I don't think it really got bad until I went 2 X 2 each day.
Unfortunately I had terrible constipation when I started Contrave. This went on for about a good 3 weeks, and then went away. I basically used laxatives during this time, and tried to eat more fiber.
Like I said in a previous question on here I have been taking contrave for 3 weeks I have had constipation since even II work week I don't know how anybody can say that this drug is rarely causing constipation everyone I've ever spoken to who has taken this drug has said the same thing about constipation every single person so apparently it is a major side effect and yes it has affected me as well I have use Miralax and it has helped me however I have used it and afterwards been in a large amount of pain I have taken Miralax in the past for constipation and it has never affected my body this way but when taking Miralax in conjunction with contrave it may cause some kind of effect but it does make you go
It's a relief to know I'm not the only one with this issue. I am at the end of my 2nd week. For someone who has been extremely regular with bowel movements it's frustrating. I've taken a mild laxative twice just to get some relief. And I feel it is interfering with my weight loss as my weight fluctuates a lot day to day.
Hi, CONSTIPATION!! Yep, I've got it. Been on Contrave 4 weeks and constipation for 3. Ouch! Every day. I started taking Metamucil once a day, then twice a day. ... added stool softener, 2 daily. The combination is working well. Laxatives daily can decrease the natural bowels elimination of stool. May cause a lifelong need for laxatives.
The weight loss is working and so are my bowels. Good luck everyone. Loose on!!!
As my earlier comments stated, I tried all sorts of methods to combat this problem. I discussed my issues with my doctor, and he gave me MiraLAX. This did the trick, ladies, and I highly recommend that you try it.
While I'm pleased with using Contrave, I initially suffered from severe constipation. These things did not work for me: drinking lots of water, eating lots of fruit, shredded wheat with bran, Benefiber, prunes, senna. I tried Dulcolax, and it worked but was too harsh on my system. I finally found a solution for my problems: CVS' Women's Gentle Laxative. (There was no Correctol, a brand name laxative for women.) I believe you just have to keep trying to find something that will work for your particular system.
