I am on Prednisone at the moment and i am experiencing the same thing. Food tastes so strange. Tea and coffee are a no no at the moment!
Easy! Just buy a bottle of cheap, over the counter gelatine capsule pills (Tylenol, etc). Empty the powder out and stick in the prednisone then re-cap it in the empty capsule - you can cut the prednisone into quarters if it's too large to go in. Just swallow! No more horrible taste.
Actually, you can buy empty gelatin capsules to use for this purpose. They can be purchased at any health food store.
Route of administration doesn't always change the side effect. Patients who receive IV prednisone also can experience the mettalic taste. Of course their dosage is significantly higher than typical oral dosages.
The side effects you mention have not been reported with Prednisone.
Prednisone can however cause oral thrush which would make your tongue feel furry, sore and white in color.
Can you put it down to anything else?
You should see your doctor if your symptoms continue.

I also have experienced a "terrible taste" (more metallic than anything) and it has changed the flavor of food. I am on 50mg once a day for five days and I have experienced this effect since the first day of usage.
I also have had a terrible taste in my mouth from Prednisone, your not alone.
I just started taking prednisone and carisoprodol yesterday and was wondering which one was causing the strange taste sensation. I assumed it was carisoprodol (muscle relaxer) because I'm a retired nurse and don't recall patients on prednisone complaining of this. But this discussion seems to indicate that it is probably the prednisone.
I started on 60mgs prednisone daily feb2012. I am in the tapering process and down to 20mgs daily. Got thrush right away and use nystatin as a swish & spit 4 times a day. It has really helped. Also I eat lots of yogurt and take one acidophilus capsule daily. (10mg with one billion active cultures) I have AIH. Well wishes!
I have been on prednisone for 3 months now. Started out with a high dosage, 60 mg. three times a week. I am now on 20 mg. 3 times a week and have had the horrible taste in my mouth since day one. Food just does not taste like it should. I only hope that when I get off the prednisone that I get my sense of taste back. I have lost 35 lbs. In 3 months because I just can't eat.
I too have a bad taste from the Prednisolone. Not taking any other drugs so can't blame something else. Makes me want to eat something sweet all the time to get rid of it but I know that's the worst thing to do. It's vile.
What can I take with it or mix it with, so it doesn't taste so bad
I am experiencing this as well. Along with the coating on my tongue
I was on steroids for 3 weeks for systemic poison ivy and I developed the burned tongue feeling and metallic taste in my mouth. I have been off the steroids for 3 months and the symptoms have subsided some what but are still there and food doesn't taste the same. I looked my symptoms up on line and I found the condition called burning mouth syndrome which sounds like what I have been experienced. It can be caused by medication. Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done about it.
I'm am experiencing a weird feeling in my mouth and cold stuff is luke warm. I'm on 60 mg once a day for 5 days, today is day 2
I was on predinsone for the first time ever for 5 days. 20mg, 2x a day. I experienced, constipation, sweating and all the other symptoms except increase in appetite. When getting off I have this horrible taste in my mouth, like extreme salty taste along with the decrease in appetite.
I have the same taste issue everytime I take prednisone. It starts about day 2 or 3 and will last about 48 hours after I stop taking it. Until... this last time. I now have upper dentures and it seems this taste is not only in my mouth, but attached to my dentures too. I have been off the predisone for about 2 weeks and I am still having no regular taste. I cant beleive they said there is nothing on the books about this issue! My doc said it was a "normal" thing!
I started a prednisone taper, in 2016. It was my first time. The taste it leaves in my mouth is so gross. It is a VERY strong, bitter, metallic taste, and affects all that I orally consume, for the duration. I have bronchitis and am now on another prednisone taper. It’s absolutely awful. If I remember correctly, it takes a day or two after taper is completed, to get normal taste back in my mouth
I also get an awful metallic taste in my mouth when taking prednisone. And an extremely sore tongue. No fun.
