I realize prednisone taste bitter but my problem is not a thing taste like it should. My vision is wonky too. Unfortunately I take one am and pm after meals for Rheumatoid arthritis pain. The side effects from other RA meds are just as unpleasant. I cannot function without 10 mg a day and even then it makes movement doable. It spikes my blood sugar if I take it and I’m not diabetic.
I’ll take it with it’s drawbacks to function in my life.
Wow this is interesting, I only taking prednisone when my lupus is extra bad which is not that often . nonetheless I do been getting this weird creamy taste in my mouth . And I feel like it’s been couple months since taste buds are off. However I take hydroquinone for lupus and thought that was affecting it , I’m going stop both till I speak to my doc , I’m so frustrated. It’s so gross to have this constant aftertaste
Take it with applesauce or other food. Be sure to bury the pill in the applesauce so it doesn’t touch your tongue going down.
I’m so glad everyone has commented with similar symptoms! I just took my first dose of Prednisone two hours ago and noticed after an hour and a half that I was smelling a weird smell, kind of like a hospital. What an interesting side effect. I haven’t been on it long enough to notice anything else but I’m glad to see that’s somewhat normal.
I was prescribed methylprednisolone 16mg today on a six-day treatment course for a swollen uvula. I swallowed two pills with water, but they taste awful. That metallic taste is unbearable. Despite that, I want to know directly from people who used it or prednisone: does it start working/healing immediately? What side effects did anyone experience? Did anyone else use it for swollen uvula,
I have had decreased sense of taste because of blood pressure medication. Since October of last year I have been on 10 mg. Of Prednisone. Since then, I taste nothing, everything has no taste. Very frustrating.
Hi Andiw: Hang in there. I have tried to comment TWICE now to your comment, but my comments have been blocked "pending approval". It is ridiculous since there was nothing controversial in my previous attempted comments. I wish you well.
This too, shall pass...
Be glad if this is the only side effect you have! This can be a very powerful med. , which means it can have very powerful side effects.
I wish lack of taste was the only side effect I have. I am also Type 1 diabetic so blood sugars are out of wack and on extra insulin to counteract and have also gained over 50 pounds, another side effect.
Oh my goodness! I feel your pain. Gaining weight on meds is my biggest fear!
I am so sorry to hear this.
Hi joynor, I have the same thing. Being on prednisone can cause thrush which tastes awful and makes my tongue white. It also makes my tongue more sensitive. Im on 20mg for asthma. Tapered from 60mg. Yes it will go away about 2 weeks after getting off prednisone.
I think so I just was given a 60mg dose this morning cause I have type A flu and by this afternoon I woke up and had this terrible taste in my mouth nothing I drink or try to eat taste good it's making me sick to my stomach. So thinking about not taking tomorrow's dose
Yes! I am in the second week of a three-week course. I lost my sense of taste after the first week- water, coffee, onions, salsa, lemons, salami... tastes weird or I can't taste anything. Does anyone know how long it will take for the sensation to come back?
Here is an easy way to bypass the awful taste of prednisone. Cut a small piece of a Medjool date (a raisin will work if your tabs are small enough) and flatten it between your fingers. Wrap the flattened date piece around your tablet and swallow whole. Make sure the piece is not too large though as you do not want to choke. There will be no taste of prednisone with this method.
I went to the ER with acute bronchitis 2 nights ago and was prescribed prednisone since then I've had a bad taste in my mouth and dry mouth. Since 3 pm yesterday I've drank over a six pack of 16 oz. Pepsi and nothing taste good
Just a thought, are you on any other medication with the prednisone? The antibiotic I'm taking tastes like toxic waste, so for me I can't blame the prednisone. I just started my prednisone pack today, but this morning I woke up with a really sweet taste in my mouth. I googled it (because that's always better than waiting to ask the Dr) and found out that some bacteria can cause a sweet taste if you have a sinus infection or pneumonia. It's a really nice change from the vile taste of death that I normally get with my chronic sinusitis.
Yes! This happens to me every time I'm on prednisone, which is a lot. After 2 days my taste changes for the worse.
I am experiencing the same thing. Been on 60mg a day for 5 days and from day one all my food and drink has tasted different. Thought I got the wrong flavor, or diet instead of regular. Soda and coffee have even been grossing me out because it tastes wrong (and let me tell you, I do not normally skip out on either one).
Only things that have tasted normal for me were foods with sharp cheeses, lots of spice, or chocolate... had to adjust my diet a bit to eat normal and not be grossed out by my odd tasting food.. (add red pepper and other spicy things, watch my chocolate intake which isn't normally a problem, and have been drinking massive amounts of water for me. Cutting out the soda though may not be a bad thing I'm thinking)
I too just began taking 60mg daily and I have a metallic taste in my mouth. It's not constant; comes and goes.
Me too, loss of taste when I first started prednisone. It sucks.
