Hi friends
I'm taking Effexor xr 75 mg (for a week) and I'm thinking of switching to cymbalta Bc the side effects of effex are really bad for me. Has anyone switched and liked cymbalta better? Less side effects? Thanks!
Has anyone taken cymbalta vs Effexor xr?

Yes. Cymbalta's increase in norepinephrine is much stronger and not dose-dependent like Effexor [XR]. The net effect of Cymbalta is that it tends to be more on the activating and stimulating side. Effexor [XR] increases serotonin more than anything else esp. at doses 75 mg/day or less, however it increases norepinephrine at doses: 150-225 mg, and then dopamine at 300 or more mg... So low doses of Effexor [XR] can feel more sedating, almost like Paxil... it's when you get to the high doses of Effexor [XR] that it acts much more like Cymbalta... Higher doses of Effexor [XR] is not getting more of the same, it's like adding a new drug, such as Paxil with Wellbturin or Strattera added to it, that's the interesting part... in contrast taking more and more of a drug such as Xanax will get you more of the same effect and stronger, but that's not the case with Effexor [XR].
Thanks for your comment! Interesting. What does norepinephrine do and what's the advantages of that vs serotonin? I've taken Effexor xr in the past but only at 75mg for anxiety / panic attacks. One time a dr did prescribe 150mg for me but I took it once and could not handle the effects. 75 seems to work for me. I just have a hard time with the side effects (increased anxiety, trouble sleeping, general nervousness and now hot flashes) hoping these pass soon! Today has been a better day and last night I slept better than I have for three weeks.
Both serotonin and norepinephrine are neurotransmitters that share equal responsibility for the brain's metabolism (many body functions as well). Some people's illness may be serotonin dependent, others norepinephrine or dopamine dependent. That's why drugs are developed that act more specifically on one or two of these chemicals.
Thanks wildcat!!
Hi, nothing had worked for me. I was at my lowest point in life. Cymbalta has helped me tremendously with no side effects. I have tried Wellbutrin, Zybriid, Lexapro & Prozac. I have not had any issues except 2 brain zaps. Good luck
Thanks for your comment!
Glad to hear it helped for you!
Hi, hope! I took Cymbalta several years ago but switched to Effexor which was far and above more effective for me.
Good luck!
PS, side effects from initiating drug treatment generally only last several days to a week or so.
Do not take cymbalta!!! It is horrible and withdrawal is making me crazy! Headaches, chills, sweats, stomach pain, I will probably lose my husband because of this drug!!! I HATE IT!!!
I am sorry to hear that. I am praying that it gets better for you very soon.
