Application of the ointment should be preceded by cleansing to remove discharge and crusts. For the first 48 hours, ointment should be applied frequently, that is every 3 to 4 hours, after which 3 to 4 applications per day are recommended. A small amount of ointment should be placed in the lower conjunctival sac. Treatment should be continued for two days after eye appears to be normal.Chloramphenicol 1% Ointment Caution
When infection is suspected as the cause of disease process, especially in purulent catarrhal conjunctivitis, attempts should be made to determine through susceptibility testing, which antibiotics will be effective prior to applying ophthalmic preparations. Most susceptible bacteria will respond to Chloramphenicol therapy in a few days. If improvement is not noted in this time period, a change of therapy should be considered. Prolonged use in cats may produce blood dyscrasias. Therapy for cats should not exceed 7 days.Warning
