Adaptil Collar
This treatment applies to the following species:The secret to happy dogs
Scientifically proven*
*The efficacy of ADAPTIL® has been proven by numerous clinical studies published in scientific journals and presented at international conferences (under the trademark D.A.P.®).
Nursing mother dogs naturally produce an appeasing pheromone. This pheromone provides reassurance to puppies, helping them feel safe and secure when encountering new experiences and unknown environments. Clinical studies have demonstrated that a synthetic analogue of the dog appeasing pheromone (D.A.P.®) helps provide reassurance and comfort to puppies and dogs of all ages.
ADAPTIL® contains D.A.P.® and is therefore recommended to help prevent and reduce stress-related behavior in puppies and adult dogs. ADAPTIL® also helps to make puppies and adult dogs more responsive to behavioral therapy and training.
The efficacy of ADAPTIL® has been demonstrated in numerous studies published within reputable scientific journals and presented at international conferences (under the trademark D.A.P.®).
Canine Stress
Adapting to a new environment or coping with a temporary challenge is potentially stressful for most dogs and puppies.
In some dogs, mild fears and worries can develop into phobias or stress-related conditions.
Particular attention should be paid to puppies during the socialization phase (3-16 weeks): bad or no experiences during this period may make them more likely to develop stress-related behavioral problems in adulthood (noise phobias, separation-related disorders).
Uses
ADAPTIL® Collar helps control or prevent stress in puppies and adult dogs, helping them to deal with challenging situations such as:
- Loud noises (thunderstorms, traffic, fireworks, etc.)
- Staying in a kennel
- Travelling
- New situations (new home, additions to the family, vacation, etc.)
The ADAPTIL® Collar has been proven to help promote learning in puppies and dogs and improve adaptation to our modern lifestyle. The ADAPTIL® Collar is therefore an aid in the prevention of stress-related behavior problems that may occur in adulthood.
Combining ADAPTIL® Collar with ADAPTIL® Diffuser or ADAPTIL® Spray may provide optimal results for dogs showing multiple fears in different situations (see table below). Consult your veterinarian for more information.
ADAPTIL® Collar is not recommended for use in cases of hyperactivity or aggression.
Instructions for use
- Place a finger in the plastic loop situated in the inside of the collar close to the buckle
- Using this loop pull the thin plastic to uncoil the collar
- Fasten the collar
- Place over your dogs head to tie loosely around the neck.
- Tighten the collar to fit snugly with your dog’s skin
- You should be able to place no more than 2 fingers between collar and dog’s skin.
- Ensure the collar is fixed inside the buckle
- Cut off the excess portion of the collar.
ADAPTIL® Collar will last up to 4 weeks. Replace collar as required.
Unless you are shampooing the dog, the collar must remain on at all times.
Duration of use must be determined by the nature/cause of the fear (see table below) and according to the duration of combined behavior therapy.
Behavior and environmental modifications may be required and advice should be sought from your veterinarian.

Frequently Asked Questions
What pheromone is in ADAPTIL® and is it safe for humans?
The pheromone in ADAPTIL® is D.A.P.® and is identical in nature to the canine appeasing pheromone secreted by mother dogs from 3-5 days after the puppy’s birth. As pheromones are species-specific, canine pheromones will have no effect on humans or other pets.
Is ADAPTIL® Collar as effective in adult dogs as it is in puppies?
Research has proven that the reassuring properties of canine appeasing pheromones are still effective in adulthood.
How does ADAPTIL® Collar work?
When ADAPTIL® Collar is in contact with the dog’s skin, the dog’s body temperature warms the collar and encourages the diffusion of the pheromone into the local environment. Therefore, it is vital ADAPTIL® Collar is in close contact with the dog’s skin at all times.
How long will it take for ADAPTIL® Collar to have an effect on my dog?
As soon as the ADAPTIL® Collar is fitted the pheromone will begin to be released and have an effect on your dog.
Can I use ADAPTIL® Collar together with other collars or bandanas?
While other collars will not impair the effectiveness of ADAPTIL® Collar, it is important to ensure that the ADAPTIL® Collar remains in close contact with the skin and is not covered by any other collar or bandana. If ADAPTIL® Collar is covered or if ADAPTIL® Collar is not in continuous contact with the dog’s skin, the release of the pheromone may be compromised and the positive influence on your dog reduced.
How long will the collar be effective?
ADAPTIL® Collar will be effective for up to 4 weeks. After this time, according to your veterinarian’s recommendation, you may need to renew the collar.
What happens if my dog eats the collar?
Like some other collars, ADAPTIL® Collar is made of plastic and will act as a foreign body in your dog’s digestive system. Please consult your veterinarian if the dog has eaten a portion of the collar. There are no toxic substances in the collar.
Can I shampoo my dog while wearing the collar?
No, you need to remove the collar before shampooing your dog. Replace the collar once your dog is dry.
What if my dog gets wet while wearing the collar?
If your dog gets wet due to rain or swimming, the collar will not work while wet, but note that the efficacy will not be affected as soon as the dog and the collar are dry.
Can I use the ADAPTIL® Collar intermittently when needed?
It is advised to leave the collar around the dog’s neck at all times for one month once opened. Your dog will benefit by constantly being exposed to the pheromone. If you remove the collar, the pheromone will still be released but at a lower rate (even when kept at a low temperature i.e. in the refrigerator) and the efficacy of the collar may be affected. There are other forms of ADAPTIL® which are more suitable for intermittent use such as the ADAPTIL® Spray.
Will other dogs in the house be affected by an ADAPTIL® Collar worn by one dog?
Yes, even if the pheromone is diffused in the immediate vicinity of the dog wearing the ADAPTIL® Collar, it is recommended that all dogs in the household wear an ADAPTIL® Collar, as the dogs without behavior problems may become too interested in the dog that wears the collar. Alternatively, ADAPTIL® Diffuser may be used in multi-dog households.
For how long should the ADAPTIL® Collar be used?
It depends on the nature of the problem in which your veterinarian advised the use of ADAPTIL® Collar.
For helping a new puppy settle and respond to training the collar can be used for 2 to 3 months.
For other uses, it may take some time before you see an improvement, depending on the nature and severity of the problem. Some dogs may be more affected than others and may need a long term behavioral therapy program.
The table above gives you some indications; however your veterinarian or behaviorist may adapt the duration of use to your dog’s specific case.
