Symptom Checker

Step 4: Read and complete the decision guide to learn more about your symptoms.

Jaundice in Newborns

If your baby had a bilirubin level checked it is important that the results be reviewed with your doctor.

Based on studies of lots of babies with jaundice, test results help us predict whether your baby will be able to get rid of the bilirubin on his own or not, given the exact age of the baby (in hours) at the time of the test (and whether or not your baby has risk factors for jaundice).

If the results suggest that your baby will not be able to get rid of the excess bilirubin on his own, a treatment using special lights may be ordered.

According to your doctor, is your baby's bilirubin level high enough to need treatment?

Yes, my baby needs treatment.

No, my baby does not need treatment.
