Symptom Checker

Step 4: Read and complete the decision guide to learn more about your symptoms.

Fever in Infants

You've said that your baby has a fever and symptoms of a cold, like a cough, runny nose, or sore throat, but no symptoms suggestive of a serious respiratory infection, throat infection, or ear infection.

Your baby most likely has a viral upper respiratory infection. You can give acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever; read the dosage directions carefully. Don't give any other medications without the advice of your doctor.

You should also call the doctor if your baby has a high fever (greater than 102 F or 39 C), trouble breathing, rash, very poor appetite, increased fussiness, or if he isn't improving in a couple of days.
