Depression

Sometimes the symptoms of depression and mania occur at the same time.

During one of these periods, it may be difficult to say whether you are up or down, but it may be possible to see or feel that something is wrong. Mood may rapidly change from sad to angry to irritable to elated. Agitation may be present. Appetite or sleep may be disturbed.

For practical purposes, episodes like this, which are called mixed episodes, are treated like manic episodes.

A person who has had a mixed episode may have bipolar disorder.
