Stool cards (fecal occult blood tests) are easy and safe. They can be completed at home. However, keep in mind that abnormal results from stool cards will usually require follow-up testing with colonoscopy.

Flexible sigmoidoscopy and barium enema have low risks of complications. The risk of a major complication with sigmoidoscopy is less than one in 1000, while the risk with barium enema is about one in 10,000.
