Does Trintellix cause sexual side effects?
Yes, Trintellix (vortioxetine) can cause sexual side effects in both males and females. Like other antidepressants that affect serotonin, Trintellix has been associated with low sex drive and difficulty achieving orgasm. However, some studies suggest it may cause fewer sexual side effects than other antidepressants.
How Common Are Sexual Side Effects with Trintellix?
The likelihood of experiencing sexual side effects varies:
- 6-8 week clinical trials: 3% to 5% of males taking Trintellix for depression reported sexual dysfunction compared to 2% of patients taking a placebo (no active medication). Up to 2% of females taking Trintellix reported sexual dysfunction compared to less than 1% of those taking a placebo.
Researchers also used the Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale (ASEX) to prospectively identify sexual side effects of Trintellix in patients without sexual dysfunction when starting treatment. It includes questions about sex drive, arousal, ability to achieve an erection (males) or lubrication (females), ease of reaching an orgasm, and orgasm satisfaction.
- Up to 34% of females and up to 29% of males experienced sexual dysfunction thought to be related to Trintellix. The incidence went up with higher doses.
What Sexual Side Effects Can Trintellix Cause?
Sexual side effects can affect males and females taking Trintellix differently.
In males, potential sexual side effects may include:
- Delayed ejaculation or inability to ejaculate
- Low sex drive
- Erectile dysfunction (difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection)
In females, possible sexual side effects include:
- Low sex drive
- Delayed or absent orgasm

What Should I Do If I Experience Sexual Side Effects?
Inform your healthcare provider if you experience sexual side effects from taking Trintellix. Make sure to include when and how often they occur. They can recommend ways to manage them or may be able to adjust your dose or change you to a different antidepressant.
You can also report any suspected side effects, including sexual side effects, to:
- Takeda Pharmaceuticals America, Inc. at 1-877-825-3327
- U.S. Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088 or www.fda.gov/medwatch
Do not stop taking Trintellix without consulting with your healthcare provider first. They can help you slowly lower your dose to avoid withdrawal symptoms, if needed, and help you find an alternative treatment option for your depression.

How to sleep while taking Cymbalta?
Not being able to sleep (also called insomnia) is one of the most common side effects reported by people taking Cymbalta. In some people, this side effect improves after a couple of weeks of taking Cymbalta, but difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep can persist in others. Here are some ways you can improve sleep while taking Cymbalta:
- Take your dose of Cymbalta in the morning. Cymbalta may be given once a day or twice a day but for those people experiencing insomnia, it should be taken just once a day in the morning
- Swallow Cymbalta capsules whole; do not crush, chew, or open up the capsules and sprinkle them on food because this may cause Cymbalta to be absorbed more quickly than intended, increasing the risk of side effects such as insomnia...
