What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring carbohydrate sugar (glycosaminoglycan) produced by the cells. It is found throughout the body, especially in eyes, skin and fluid in the joints. As the skin ages, it can lose the natural hydrating effect of hyaluronic acid that lends fullness and roundness.
In skincare products, hyaluronic acid acts as humectant and works by retaining water. It acts as a cushioning agent to add volume and smoothness to the appearance of the skin. Hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water.
Juvéderm injection products are made from a modified form of hyaluronic acid in the lab to create a smooth gel. It is derived from Streptococcus equi (a bacterium) and manufactured by a special fermentation process. A high concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid accounts for Juvéderm's long duration of action.
Juvederm is not an animal-derived product and does not require skin allergy testing prior to injection.
How painful are Juvéderm injections?
Injection pain will differ among patients. All Juvéderm products that are labeled with “XC” contain lidocaine, a numbing medicine that will help to control pain during the injection. Ask your aesthetic healthcare provider about the use of other topical numbing products or ice to help alleviate any pain you may experience.
Treatments can take 15 to 60 minutes, depending upon treatment areas. Talk to your licensed specialist about how to care for your injections sites after treatment.
Side effects
In clinical studies, injection site reactions with Juvederm Ultra Plus were mild to moderate in severity, did not require further intervention, and usually lasted no more than 7 days.
Side effects may include:
- Redness, swelling, pain, and tenderness, which are the most common side effects.
- Firmness, swelling, lumps bruising, itching or discoloration may also occur.
- Skin dryness may occur with Juvéderm Volbella XC lip treatment.
Avoid applying makeup for 12 hours after treatment. You should also minimize exercise, sun or heat exposure, and alcoholic beverages within the first 24 hours following treatment to avoid worsening of the side effects.
According to the manufacturer, side effects are consistent with other facial injection procedures and most will resolve within 30 days.
