Drug Interactions between Ortho Cyclen and pomalidomide
This report displays the potential drug interactions for the following 2 drugs:
- Ortho Cyclen (ethinyl estradiol/norgestimate)
- pomalidomide
Interactions between your drugs
ethinyl estradiol pomalidomide
Applies to: Ortho Cyclen (ethinyl estradiol / norgestimate) and pomalidomide
Pomalidomide can cause dangerous blood clots, and using it together with ethinyl estradiol may increase the risk. Also, the risk is increased with age, cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. Blood clots can lead to complications such as heart attack, pulmonary embolism (blockage of an artery in the lung), and stroke. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications. You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience potential signs and symptoms of blood clots such as chest pain; shortness of breath; difficulty breathing; coughing up blood; sudden loss of vision; pain, redness or swelling in an arm or leg; and numbness or weakness on one side of the body. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Drug and food interactions
norgestimate food
Applies to: Ortho Cyclen (ethinyl estradiol / norgestimate)
Grapefruit juice may increase the blood levels of certain medications such as norgestimate. You may want to limit your consumption of grapefruit and grapefruit juice during treatment with norgestimate. However, if you have been regularly consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice with the medication, then it is advisable for you to talk with your doctor before changing the amounts of these products in your diet, as this may alter the effects of your medication. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or you experience increased side effects. Orange juice is not expected to interact.
pomalidomide food
Applies to: pomalidomide
If you are a smoker, you should be aware that cigarette smoking may reduce the blood levels and effects of pomalidomide. Talk to your health care professional if you have any questions or concerns. Pomalidomide should be taken with water the same time everyday on an empty stomach, at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after a meal. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
ethinyl estradiol food
Applies to: Ortho Cyclen (ethinyl estradiol / norgestimate)
Consumer information for this interaction is not currently available.
MONITOR: Coadministration of ethinyl estradiol may increase the plasma concentrations of drugs that are primarily metabolized by CYP450 1A2. In a study of 30 healthy volunteers administered the CYP450 1A2 substrate tizanidine, the systemic exposure (AUC) of tizanidine was 3.9 times greater in women using an oral contraceptive containing ethinyl estradiol.
MANAGEMENT: Patients should be monitored for increased adverse effects of the CYP450 1A2 substrate during concomitant use with ethinyl estradiol. Product labeling for the specific CYP450 1A2 substrate should be consulted for additional recommendations.
