Drug Interactions between felbamate and mefloquine
This report displays the potential drug interactions for the following 2 drugs:
- felbamate
- mefloquine
Interactions between your drugs
mefloquine felbamate
Applies to: mefloquine and felbamate
Mefloquine may increase the risk of seizures and reduce the effectiveness of felbamate in the treatment of epilepsy. If you are receiving felbamate for epilepsy, you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. Felbamate can also reduce the blood levels of mefloquine in some cases, which may make the medication less effective in the prevention and treatment of malaria. Contact your doctor if you experience a loss of seizure control or your condition changes during treatment with these medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
Drug and food interactions
mefloquine food
Applies to: mefloquine
Food can enhance the levels of mefloquine in your body. Take mefloquine immediately after a meal. This will make it easier for your body to absorb the medication. Take each dose with a full glass, at least 8 ounces (240 mL) of water. For children or those who have difficulty swallowing, mefloquine can be crushed and mixed with water or sugar water. Talk to your healthcare provider if swallowing the tablets is difficult.
felbamate food
Applies to: felbamate
Alcohol can increase the nervous system side effects of felbamate such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with felbamate. Do not use more than the recommended dose of felbamate, and avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medication affects you. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.
