Drug Interactions between Atripla and Fortovase
This report displays the potential drug interactions for the following 2 drugs:
- Atripla (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil)
- Fortovase (saquinavir)
Interactions between your drugs
saquinavir efavirenz
Applies to: Fortovase (saquinavir) and Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir disoproxil)
Ask your doctor before using saquinavir together with efavirenz. Using these medications together may cause saquinavir to be less effective. Contact your doctor if your condition worsens. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
saquinavir tenofovir
Applies to: Fortovase (saquinavir) and Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir disoproxil)
Saquinavir may increase the blood levels and effects of tenofovir. This can increase the risk of side effects including serious ones like kidney or liver damage and a condition known as lactic acidosis, which is a buildup of lactic acid in the blood. You should seek immediate medical attention if you develop symptoms of these conditions. Symptoms of kidney damage may include swelling, weight gain, shortness of breath, drowsiness, confusion, mood changes, increased thirst, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, pain in your lower back, and urinating more or less than usual or not at all. Symptoms of liver damage may include fever, chills, joint pain or swelling, unusual bleeding or bruising, skin rash, itching, loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, dark colored urine, and/or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Symptoms of lactic acidosis may include fatigue, unusual muscle pain, difficulty breathing, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, dizziness, and a fast or irregular heartbeat. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
efavirenz tenofovir
Applies to: Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir disoproxil) and Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir disoproxil)
Efavirenz may cause liver problems, and using it with other medications that can also affect the liver such as tenofovir may increase that risk. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with these medications. Call your doctor immediately if you have fever, chills, joint pain or swelling, unusual bleeding or bruising, skin rash, itching, loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark colored urine, light colored stools, and/or yellowing of the skin or eyes, as these may be signs and symptoms of liver damage. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
efavirenz emtricitabine
Applies to: Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir disoproxil) and Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir disoproxil)
Efavirenz may cause liver problems, and using it with other medications that can also affect the liver such as emtricitabine may increase that risk.
Drug and food interactions
saquinavir food
Applies to: Fortovase (saquinavir)
Food can enhance the levels of saquinavir in your body. Saquinavir should be taken with meals or within 2 hours after eating. This will make it easier for your body to absorb the medication. Grapefruit can raise the levels of saquinavir in your body. Discuss the use of grapefruit products with your doctor. Do not increase or decrease the amount of grapefruit products in your diet without first talking to your doctor.
efavirenz food
Applies to: Atripla (efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir disoproxil)
Taking efavirenz with food increases the amount of medicine in your body, which may increase the frequency of side effects. You should take efavirenz once a day on an empty stomach, preferably at bedtime. Taking it at bedtime may make some side effects such as dizziness, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, trouble concentrating, and/or unusual dreams less bothersome. However, these symptoms may be more severe if efavirenz is used with alcohol or mood-altering (street) drugs. You should avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medication affects you. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.
