Minoxidil/tretinoin topical Disease Interactions

There are 3 disease interactions with minoxidil / tretinoin topical.

Major

Retinoid/retinoid-like topical (applies to minoxidil/tretinoin topical) eczema

Major Potential Hazard, High plausibility.

Topical retinoids may cause severe irritation on eczematous skin. Therapy with topical retinoids should be avoided on abraded or eczematous skin.

Moderate

Minoxidil topical (applies to minoxidil/tretinoin topical) systemic effects

Moderate Potential Hazard, Low plausibility. Applicable conditions: Congestive Heart Failure, Fluid Retention, Sunburn, Arrhythmias, Ischemic Heart Disease

In general, topically applied minoxidil is poorly absorbed from the normal, intact scalp. However, alteration in scalp epidermal integrity (e.g., abrasion, sunburn, psoriasis) can increase percutaneous absorption with resultant systemic effects, including sodium and water retention, local or generalized edema, pericardial effusion, pericarditis, tamponade, tachycardia, and worsening or development of angina. Therapy with minoxidil should be avoided in patients with diminished or altered scalp integrity that may lead to enhanced systemic absorption, particularly in the presence of underlying cardiovascular dysfunction or fluid retention.

Moderate

Retinoid/retinoid-like topical (applies to minoxidil/tretinoin topical) sunburn

Moderate Potential Hazard, High plausibility.

Retinoid-like products can cause extreme irritation when applied to sunburned skin. Patients with sunburn should be cautioned not to use retinoid-like acne products until fully recovered, and to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight (including sunlamps) and use sunscreen/protective clothing during treatment with these products.

Drug Interaction Classification

These classifications are only a guideline. The relevance of a particular drug interaction to a specific individual is difficult to determine. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting or stopping any medication.
Major Highly clinically significant. Avoid combinations; the risk of the interaction outweighs the benefit.
Moderate Moderately clinically significant. Usually avoid combinations; use it only under special circumstances.
Minor Minimally clinically significant. Minimize risk; assess risk and consider an alternative drug, take steps to circumvent the interaction risk and/or institute a monitoring plan.
Unknown No interaction information available.
