"Second negative reaction to propofol. I explained my first reaction to all staff - 8 different people. I was very combative on both occasions, but this time I pulled out the endoscope, which is very dangerous. I will never agree to this drug again."

"I am 72. Had my 5th colonoscopy 2 days ago. Before, I always had Versed, which was wonderful. With propofol, I was out immediately, but awoke feeling disoriented and very scared, like coming out of a deep sleep when the phone rings. Got home and cried for an hour over nothing. Slept all day. 2 days later still having trouble concentrating and feel very tired and out of it, unfocused. Never again."

"Had a colonoscopy 9 days ago. Had one 20 years ago with Versed/Fentanyl with no problem. This time the doctor said they only use propofol. I fell asleep quickly and had no memory of the procedure, but I had to be suctioned for excess drooling and coughing while I was under. My throat felt like I had eaten a razor blade. I was woozy, wobbly, and felt like I couldn't think right for 4 days. I had and still have deep laryngitis and a low-grade temperature. I feel awful. Will not use propofol again."

"I had my fifth colonoscopy and second endoscopy done last week. I assumed I would do as well as in the past. I was easily put under with no issues, but my trouble started when I woke up after the procedure. I began to sneeze nonstop, and my nose started to run like a faucet. I asked the nurse if this was normal. Was told it happens to a few patients. I went home. Thought it would get better in a few hours, but it got worse, and 9 days later, I'm still suffering. I noticed it gets worse in sunlight and office lighting. I will never let them use propofol again. I'm hoping this will eventually subside. If not, I will go to an ENT to see what they can do. Think twice and ask what your doctor plans to use before your procedure."

"2010 had a colonoscopy. Not sure what anesthesia was used, but I had no issues other than being sleepy afterwards. 2018 had outpatient surgery for a torn meniscus. First experience with propofol, and it was excellent. No side effects, up and around that afternoon, eating normally. August 2020, had another colonoscopy with propofol as the anesthesia. Woke up in recovery cold and shivering. Once I got home, awful headache, sore mouth, blister on the tip of my tongue, sore throat, runny nose, cough, and pain in my jaws, slight swelling, and tenderness in the glands. Presuming the cold symptoms are from the oxygen cannula from what I have read here. The headache likely from dehydration. But the jaw issues and the too huge blister make no sense. I’m 66 and have had lots of surgeries and procedures, including dental, and I have never had any problem with jaw clenching. Something doesn’t seem quite right. Not sure I want this again."

Propofol "We used it regularly in the ICU, very few side effects, patients fell asleep quickly and returned to alertness quickly. Dosage needs varied between patients. We also used it for what is called 'conscious sedation' for outpatient procedures. Again, dosage needs do vary between people, and it is not just height and weight. It takes an experienced practitioner to use it in conscious sedation. I worked in the ICU for 7 years. I had it for upper endoscopy without side effects during or after the procedure."

"I had a propofol infusion for a 40-minute operation today and had no problems whatsoever. Like many 'reviewers' here, it was my first time undergoing general anesthesia, and I was quite nervous as I did not know what to expect. However, if I knew beforehand what I know now, I would not have worried a single bit. Once the line was in and the infusion began, the doctor said I would start to feel sleepy soon, and within 10 seconds I was asleep. There was no discomfort or unpleasant side effects. I woke up feeling happy and positive, just thirsty and slightly groggy, which passed quickly. Within 30 mins, I was dressed and I left the hospital within an hour. I have felt relaxed all day. Marvelous medicine and experience, I will not worry next time!"

"I had my first colonoscopy yesterday and was really anxious about the sedation. I've had conscious sedation before and was always aware of the procedure being performed. Not so with propofol. I was out in about 5 seconds. Next thing I knew, I was in recovery. I felt pretty stoned for an hour or so afterwards, but it wasn't unpleasant!"

"I have had a few 'twilight' surgeries, and this was my first time having Propofol. I can honestly say it is the BEST anesthetic I have ever had. It is literally like a light switch on/off. I was given a sedative beforehand because I have bad anxiety and then was wheeled into surgery. I was given the Propofol, and within 30 seconds, I was gone, and the next time I knew, I heard a nurse calling my name in recovery, giving me water. I had no nausea, and I felt a little buzzed the next day, but I could function. I wasn't sleepy or groggy at all."

"I am 28 years old, was given propofol for a colonoscopy. I was extremely nervous before the procedure because I had a horrible experience with sedation, apparently, I cannot be sedated. I was wide awake, so I was scared this would be the same. I was wrong. I remember the medicine being put in my IV, my arm started burning a little, and the next thing I knew I was waking up and the nurse saying, 'You're all done!' Immediately, I was awake, no grogginess or side effects. I had a snack and soda and was ready to leave. I felt fine the rest of the day. I am having an EGD for GERD symptoms today, getting propofol again, so not too worried."

"Propofol given for colonoscopy. Awoke quickly and was alert and feeling fine within minutes after the procedure. On the way home, I started sneezing. I have a very runny nose and have been sneezing for the past 24 hours. No other signs of a cold. Was glad to see some others have reported a similar response. I can't find anything from the medical profession that confirms my connection with the medicine and the side effect."

"Will never allow this drug to be given to me again. Woke up from cataract surgery, and just before surgery was completed. Been three weeks. Mental fog, extreme fatigue, memory issues, agitated, depressed, and horrific headaches. No one wants to hear it. A surgeon just talked right over me when I tried to express concerns. I'm afraid I'm never going to get past all this. Horrible, horrible drug. Never again."

"I was scared to death of being put to sleep, as I had never been put under before. The anesthesiologist explained he was going to administer the drug now. He knew I was nervous, so he said to take a deep breath and count backwards from 20 to myself or out loud to give everyone something to laugh about. That made me chuckle. I counted 20, 19, 18, and that's the last thing I remember! It literally felt like seconds, and I was opening my eyes in recovery, feeling very relaxed. I was amazed. I am no longer afraid, and I think this is a very wonderful drug. It works extremely fast and leaves no unpleasant side effects."

"I don't usually post on reviews, but felt I should as I have read every review on this site, as I was so very, very afraid of having a gastroscopy under propofol. I had my procedure this morning, and can honestly say I stressed myself out about nothing at all... The experience of being sedated by propofol was very pleasant. I was wheeled into the room, asked to lie on my side, and the cannula was put into my hand (worst bit). The anaesthetist chatted to me about where I worked, and I said, “Have you already given me something because you have two heads?” He laughed, and that was the last I know about it. I woke up in recovery from a dream I was having, and after 20 minutes was having a cup of tea and a biscuit. I'm now home and just fine, if a little tired. I can honestly say I won't fear having sedation ever again! So anyone who is worried, please try not to. I'm a huge coward, and it was easy :)"

"I would give this more than a ten if I could! I am the most anxious patient ever. Was crying, kicking, and screaming before my endoscopy because I was so, so scared. I was dreading it forever, and I made such a huge scene. BUT AS SOON as they gave me Versed with propofol shortly after, ALL I remember is waking up! I woke up slightly drowsy, slightly dizzy, which lasted very shortly, but 99.9% mentally alert and aware of what was going on. They let me take a quick 30-minute nap, and then I was able to walk out of the hospital to the parking deck (with a bit of assistance). Honestly, I have NO idea why I was so anxious. What an easy experience. No pain, no itchiness, no sneezing, nothing. Just a good 15-minute sleep."

"I had propofol for a colonoscopy and EGD. I was told afterwards that I was hard to sedate and was given an additional dosage. I had no recollection of getting dressed after the procedure and felt I was 'not right' for over 24 hours afterward. I had 2 previous procedures using different medication with no problems."

"I had propofol as an anesthetic for a colonoscopy. I had increased secretions, a laryngospasm, and a dangerously high heart rate. I had to have an oral airway inserted, be suctioned, and administered Robinol for secretions. I had 'bit' my upper lip and my tongue. My mouth was dry, my neck was stiff, my ears ached, my jaw was sore and bruised (because someone had to open my airway). I am still sore after 4 days, something went horribly wrong. I am still coughing!"

"I just had my second screening colonoscopy. Due to a family history of colon cancer, my first screening was at age 40. For that procedure, I was given Versed/Demerol, which did not work well for me. It caused agitation, foggy thoughts, prolonged amnesia, and depression that lasted a couple of weeks. This time, using propofol, it was a night-and-day difference. I went out in just 5-10 seconds after injection, and I woke up quickly and smoothly. I have full memory of the recovery room, speaking with the doctor afterward, etc. I took it easy the rest of the day, but I felt fine, with no lingering amnesia or foggy-headedness. For me, it will be propofol only from now on!"

"I had a colonoscopy today, and propofol was used as the anesthesia. The doctor said he was injecting it into my IV, and I felt a little burning sensation in my arm, and then I was awake and in the recovery room. I had a little bit of drowsiness, no nausea - I got dressed and went home, where I felt sleepy for the rest of the day!"

"Had propofol for colonoscopy. I have had many colonoscopies as I have Crohn's and was always in significant pain on sedatives. This time, I was out like a light and woke up feeling very peaceful. No longer will I dread colonoscopies."

"Went in for an endoscopy/colonoscopy procedure. All went well until I woke up uncontrollably crying, which was really, really awful! My poor husband didn't know what to do, and the nurses told me that this happens in some patients (younger patients) and would go away. I am 52. I would have liked to have been warned ahead of time that this could happen. The good news is that it passed after about a half hour, but made me never want to use this drug again. In the past, I have had Versed (sp?) with great results, so wasn't worried going in, thinking I would have that again."

"Have had some horrible experiences with anesthesia, but my last 3 experiences with propofol were excellent. Woke up clear-headed, no nausea. It's been used for my last 2 colonoscopies and a gallbladder surgery. Has really alleviated my anxiety over procedures, surgery."

"Received this horrible stuff for my upper endoscopy. Made my heart race for two days, coughed so much when I came to and afterward for about 10 minutes, made chest sore, made me a chatterbox and I'm usually a quiet person.... wasn't sleepy, I went to bed, deep sleep, woke up to heart racing and jittery feeling from this medicine, caused shallow breathing too. It will never pipe through my veins again! I had to drink and drink water to get this junk out of my system. Horrible poison!"

"Very frightened to do a colonoscopy! I had a bad experience years ago with the prep GoLYTELY. The anesthesia that they used didn't work well, and I woke up during the scope as they turned the corner in the colon. Also was out for most of the day. Today was a totally different experience! I took Miralax, Dulcolax, and pushed the fluids! Gatorade and water. It wasn't too bad at all, except some upset stomach later in the night. The anesthesia, Propofol, was a wonderful experience! I had no pain, was out in 20 seconds, and just dreamed. It was just like I fell asleep! Woke up a little groggy, and my head felt a little heavy for about 10 minutes. I went home and am eating and feeling fine."

"Had a colonoscopy yesterday and have had at least 6 surgeries and procedures in the last few years, with me specifically mentioning my desire for propofol. Had no symptoms of a cold beforehand. Woke up with a running nose, severe sore throat, headache, cough, chills, and the absolute feeling of having a cold. Lasted for the rest of the night, feeling better this morning, but still with a sore throat and headache. So confused about this till I start reading this thread. Why this happened on this procedure and not the others is a mystery and concerning."
