For Gout "When I was 50 years old, I thought I had sprained my ankle. I went to the Dr. and he said to take some Aleve to see if it would ease the pain. Within two hours, the swelling and pain went away. Over the next year, I had two more flare-ups of the same problem, but Aleve didn't help. So I went back to the Dr. who diagnosed gout and prescribed Probenecid. I'm now 74 years old and have been taking 500 mg of Probenecid once a day. I haven't had a flare-up in 24 years. My Uric Acid levels range between 5 and 5.9. It works for me without any side effects so I say 'Don't mess with success!'"

For Gout "I'm 45 years old, with formal detection of gout since the last 10 years and am on Probenecid now. Initially, I was prescribed Allopurinol by my general physician (6 months only), but during my subsequent visit to the rheumatologist, he suggested I get tested for ALT/AST levels, which were high. On account of this, my treatment was changed to Probenecid. Currently, my serum uric acid is on average between 5.2 and 5.8, and occasionally it shoots up to over 6 or 7 if I eat excess proteins, drink beer, etc."

For Gout "1st Dr. prescribed allopurinol. Pharmacy said it was expensive and insurance wouldn't cover it. I tried natural methods. Would get flare-ups about every 6 months. Blood tested in Sept/Oct and UA level was over 9. Researched different gout meds and picked probenecid. In Nov went to Dr. that did blood work in Sept and asked for probenecid. They pushed allopurinol very hard, 1st saying they never heard of probenecid, then saying allopurinol was better on organs than probenecid. (Later my pharmacist and chiropractor have said allopurinol was not better on the organs.) I insisted on probenecid and got a 3-month prescription. UA went down to 6 in two months and I felt great. After 3rd month, Dr. would not renew prescription and offered allopurinol. Gout came back in about 5 days. Doing blood work now to check UA and looking for a Dr. that will prescribe probenecid."

For Gout "A drug that has been on the market for many years and is time-tested. Was given the drug from a foot doctor as I visited, thinking I had broken a bone in my foot, and it turned out to be gout. Since it was my first painful attack, he only prescribed 500 mg once a day. After a few years, I thought I knew best and stopped the med. About a month later, I was walking with a cane. Went back on 500 mg per day and have been on it for 15 years with no side effects. With the ease of the drug, I often wonder why this drug is not the first line to stop gout instead of the others that can have terrible side effects."

For Gout "I take Probenecid twice daily and have for over 15 years. It's rare to have a gout attack, maybe a mild one once per year. I haven't had a disabling attack since I started taking it."

Benemid (probenecid) for Gout "No side effects. This medication has been on the market for years...is time-tested. It is quite effective in keeping my uric acid level acceptably low. It is inexpensive and regarded as a frontline choice for the long-term treatment of gout."
