"Been taking trileptal to control seizures for about 8 months. Have seizures as a result of a low grade, inoperable brain tumor in left temporal lobe. Seizures only last about 2 minutes. Tried Keppra ( did not completely control them, higher does left me in a constant fog and suffering suicidal ideation), Lamictal - developed horrible rash during titration and now Trileptal. Seizures have been controlled, so far, on 750mg AM and PM. I do feel somewhat tired until I get used to the dose and then the doc increase it again. He wants to get to 900 mg AM and PM. I am troubled by the weight gain - a lot! I do use more salt in my meals ( never did before, had to buy a salt shaker!) and drink a sports drink - low cal - each day. I miss my wine."

"17mo old w/ presumed localization related focal partial complex & secondary generalized tonic clonic seizures replaced Keppra w/ Trileptal. Seizure characteristics changed/worsened, frequency & duration increased from every 4-10wks to weekly & from ~10min to ~15-45min w/ severe respiratory distress leading to numerous ambulance transports & hospitalizations. Though not ill, chronic respiratory distress developed such that O2 supplementation was required at 0.5lpm awake & 1.5-2lpm asleep. After >2mo of regular dosage increases following seizures, she was admitted to prolonged Video EEG following transport. Trileptal was weaned & in 3 days no O2 was needed, nothing was captured in 5 days & she remains Trileptal/seizure/O2 free weeks later."

"I am a 19 year old male, who was diagnosed with left temporal lobe epilepsy at the age of 5, and the cause is unknown. I had daytime complex partial seizures commonly, and nighttime grand mal seizures, rarely. I started with Keppra causing me to be violent and aggressive. I then switched to oxcarbazepine(Trileptal) and only had positive effects. It stopped grand mal seizures but only slightly reduced the complex partial seizures. My epilepsy is refractory and I may have surgery after they do an SEEG test to see what side my language is on. The partial seizures have symptoms of voices, fear, confusion, and goosebumps on left side of body. I should mention I was also born deaf in my left ear. The cause is also unknown because all the parts are functioning."

"My first seizure 23 years ago caused by an AVM . I took 600mg morning and 600 mg nightly and very successful for 21 years no side effects then two years ago with a massive Tonic Clonic in the hospital five days. My sodium level was below 100 at that level it gets dangerous - please listen - it is caused by Oxcarbazepine. Keep your eye on sodium level talk to your neurologist"

"All this came about when I felt ringing in the ears from the other seizure meds I changed over to this present med and now have all the above, but I can't cut down as I end up passing out on the street while walking, or sometimes when I drive a car, so I have to take the full dose and put up with the side effects"

Oxtellar XR (oxcarbazepine) "I've been on Oxtellar XR 1200 mg/day for several years and it completely controls my partial seizures. I have not noticed any ill side effects. I had been on Trileptal before, but it made me sleepy for a few hours after taking it, and Oxtellar XR does not tire me out. It is very expensive if you don't have a decent prescription plan. As far as I know, there is no generic equivalent available."
