"I was diagnosed with severe PTSD a year and a half ago. Started on mirtazapine 15 mg, which stopped my tremors, helped me get my appetite back, and initially helped me sleep. Because I had additional complications of multiple benign tumors in my womb, which were misdiagnosed as a stomach ulcer, I was prescribed lansoprazole and ranitidine together, which gave me anorexia. My dose of mirtazapine was upped to 30 mg to combat the stress of this, but I feel like the other meds made it less effective. In the end, the lowest dose of mirtazapine, 7.5 mg before bed, was the most effective to help me sleep, reset my body clock, regulate my appetite, and generally made me feel better. It was also the dosage with the least brain fog. It takes some time to get used to, as it dulls your emotions a little bit, but I couldn't have recovered without it."

"Have anxiety, depression, not eating, functional neurological disorder, PTSD, trauma, insomnia, etc. This drug will be different for everyone, here’s my experience: 15 mg nightly. When I started taking the drug, it made my symptoms much worse for several weeks. I didn’t leave the house, etc. I was told to persevere, I was dubious as I’ve been told that with several antidepressants before, and things didn’t get better, and sometimes worse. I am highly reactive to medication. However, after a few weeks, I felt somewhat improved. It makes me sleepy, but then I had insomnia, so it helps with that, and I eat a lot, especially sugary things, the cravings are huge. I’ve put on over two stone in two years. However, I was eating nothing before, so I guess it’s an improvement. I also have the side effect of vivid nightly dreams, sometimes nightmares. I recently missed a dose, and it was very bad: suicidal ideation, insomnia, depression, headaches, for days."

"Five days after starting on mirtazapine, I felt as if my brain had shrunk in my skull and was surrounded in an ice-cold fog and felt like I was in a black-and-white horror film. The doctor didn't believe me when I reported this and said I would not notice a change for 14 days and to expect to feel worse before I felt better, so I took them for 2 and 1/2 months in which I plummeted into the worst mental and physical state. I stopped taking them after I began to see 'ghosts' and put on a short course of quetiapine."

"I have severe PTSD, anxiety, and depression. I've tried heaps, and this is the best so far: 30 mg in the morning, 30 mg at night. If I don't have it, I spend 22 hours in my room each day. I am also seeing a psychologist."

"I've been taking 15 mg of mirtazapine and 10 mg of zolpidem about 2 hours before bedtime for over 6 years. I rarely have vivid nightmares and generally get about 6 hours of good sleep, followed by an hour or two of drowsiness. Before I was on this regimen, I was lucky to have 3 hours of sleep, so I am pretty happy with it."

"Promoted no big deal about taking this tablet to my 19-year-old son. But I was worried about the side effects. Only took 1 day, and now it's been nearly 24 hours. My son knows nothing of side effects, I do not want to sow the seeds, so to speak. He had been sleeping from early evening to getting up fresh at 10 a.m. He went straight to the fridge for his prescribed milkshake! Good sign he is hungry and needs to put on weight. He was worried he would put weight on, he needs at least a stone of weight on, and his body will be happy, and he will not stand out looking so skinny. He is 5 ft 5 and 8 stone. I am hoping his anxiety will also be reduced, I will keep you updated. I hope you will have a positive journey. I know side effects can be awful for a few weeks for the brain to adjust. And I am prepared to keep my son feeling safe with me, being calm and positive."

"Along with PTSD, I suffer from depression, but I got the mirtazapine for regulating my sleep. In this aspect, it has worked very well. The first night I took it, I sleepwalked and had very vivid dreams. Since then, I’ve just had really lucid/vivid dreams that seem to last whole timelines. I find them fun regardless of how it goes. I wake up feeling well-rested. As it has just become spring, I’m not sure if the headaches and mild body discomfort are related to the medication or just weather changes and pollen. Nothing unmanageable."

"I've been on a few different medications, which all made me really drowsy and had little effect on anxiety symptoms. If anything, I was more paranoid as I couldn't function properly. However, now on 15mg of mirtazapine taken around 8 PM before bed, it has worked the best! I'm actually out of bed daily, not feeling hopelessness, and it eased my anxiety tenfold! I feel alive again. Not hyper, but normal for the first time in a long time (10 years). The only side effect I've found is my appetite has increased, but I am monitoring it. If I had known that medication worked so well, I would have asked for a review years ago."

"I am 3 weeks in taking 15 mg of mirtazapine for PTSD. I am starting to feel a zombie-like effect (dragging, drained, and feeling paranoid and somewhat confused). The mirtazapine has helped some of my PTSD symptoms, such as sleep and anxiety. With only 3 weeks in, I know it is still early, so I will be patient. The zombie feeling just concerns me because I’m a creative person, and my creative juices aren’t flowing. Yesterday, I was outside, and everything didn’t feel real, like I was in a dream state. This is just some odd stuff, but I’m hopeful!"

"I was taking 15 mg mirtazapine for anxiety and PTSD before bed for two months. At first, it helped with the anxiety and nightmares I was having. Within 30 minutes of taking it, I was out. It was very difficult to get out of bed in the morning. The morning drowsy side effects only lasted about two weeks for me, but then I started having twitches in my eyelids. I had never had a seizure before but have had 3 petit mal seizures since. After my third and extremely violent seizure, I stopped use and have not used since. Seizures have also stopped along with the twitching in my face. If you start to have any twitching in your face or eyelids, I recommend consulting your doctor. By the time I did, it was almost too late. I also experienced memory loss."

"I've taken a half dozen other antidepressants, and this is the only one that stabilized my thoughts/actions. Prior to taking this, I would easily fall into an uncontrollable rage, trash my entire house, then feel guilty for trashing my house. I couldn't go out in public and would get in fights all the time. I used to smoke marijuana before bed because it stops me from dreaming. The mirtazapine does the same thing without the dope side effects. I'm taking 30 mg/night. I should warn you, the adjustment period to this drug was hard, so make sure you are somewhere safe until you feel your mood stabilize, which might take a week. On day 3 of taking this drug, my symptoms were worse. On the morning of day 4, I felt like a changed person and haven't had a single thought of suicide/self-harm since. If you take your pill at night and nap during the day, I will warn you that you're going to have nightmares during your nap because I don't think the pill has that long of a half-life."

"I was given sertraline initially, and this made my condition worse. It wiped out my libido, which caused me to feel even more hopeless. Couldn't sleep, sweats, etc. But then mirtazapine in a 15 mg dose changed things overnight. Fantastic sleeps with wonderful dreams. Oh, and I got my mojo back! Yes, I've put on weight, but that's most probably due to my avoiding the gym. Although I have to say that food ... tastes and textures ... is so very appealing now."

"At least this one doesn't make me manic and suicidal like Zoloft, Prozac, or Paxil. Mirtazapine seems to be the gentle cousin of these drugs. I can't really say it helps with my depression or anxiety too much, but it knocks me out and doesn't seem to affect my REM sleep, that's a blessing with this disorder. Though I am only on 15 mg, and I know this is not typically the dose for anxiety and depression, I am just wary of anything that boosts serotonin."

"I have been taking Remeron 45 mg for approximately 2 years. Gained about 20 lbs, my son passed, and I ate comfort food, thought I could get it off fast. I did lose the weight, now my cholesterol is very high, and all the statins do not mesh with Remeron, I either have a rash or itch. I am going to get my doctor to decrease it or stop it gradually and get my cholesterol down, then maybe start back on it. When my son passed, I ate Edward's pies, the whole thing in a day, and/or ice cream daily (the whole box). The PTSD comes on every once in a while, or I have a really bad nightmare. The thought of a heart attack is not worth it. Had PTSD since I was 11 years old and had so many diagnoses thrown at me that did not fit, I know it's PTSD, NOW! Remeron helps me!"

"Sertraline made me sick a lot and it didn’t cut out the nightmares and me getting upset over fireworks. I’ve been taking mirtazapine 50mg and the insomnia and nightmares aren’t a problem anymore, and I’m going to a bonfire night event for the first time because the mirtazapine is calming me down."

"I was diagnosed with PTSD. At first, I was on 15 mg of Valium a day (this kept me calm and clued on), then my doctor put me on 15 mg of Mirtazapine. I found it turned me into a moody, brain-dead zombie the next day, even if I had it at 6 PM at night, I wouldn't be out of bed until at least 12 PM the next day, and I would still be tired. I ended up putting on heaps of weight, having worse mood swings, and trouble falling asleep when I was on Mirtazapine. I have PTSD, but I am NOT depressed. I tried to explain this to my doctor, but she didn't pay much attention. I'm wondering if that may have something to do with the way my body reacted. Personally, I prefer 15 mg of Valium, I'm calm and can still function 100%."

"This medicine made me sleep so well and, like others, found it hard to get out of bed. When I did get up, I was in a surreal state of mind, very zombie-like, pupils so full, looked like I was high. That was on 1/2, so I tried 1/4. The effects did lessen, but I still felt weird."

"I have been on mirtazapine 30 mg for about a year now for PTSD. At first, the doctor prescribed me 15 mg, which made me really sleepy, and then he increased me to 30 mg, which helped my nightmares. I also take 3.5 mg risperidone twice a day, as well as 375 mg venlafaxine, which is working well for me. I also have autism."

"I'll be so real with everybody. I tried every single antidepressant you can think of, nothing has helped with my extremely severe PTSD and panic attacks. This drug changed my life within three days of taking it. I went from every single day with negative thoughts, not sleeping at night or oversleeping, now to days where it's going so well I could be so happy, but at some point, it will hit me, I'd get shaky, my head will spin, and my heart racing. I promise you I know these meds take time for the full effect. I'm on day four, tonight I sleep like a baby, I have positive thoughts, and I don't feel anxious at all. Try it, I hope it helps for everybody, and it does get better, guys, I promise. The only side effect I get is dry mouth, these meds knock you out like a light."

"The VA put me on Remeron 30 mg, and I've taken it for probably ten years. It doesn't work anymore, so I am weaning off. I am surprised the word 'glaucoma' is not mentioned in any of these reports. The reader can look up the dangers. I am sick of PTSD from 'Nam. I'll see my Dr in 6 weeks and ask for a different med."

"I have been going to a doctor for over a year, and he has been great about trying different medications to get me out of a deep depression. Just recently, he got a different job, and now I see someone new. She is trying to take me off this medication, and I am feeling low again. I don't want to go out or do anything. This medicine had me feeling great and wanting to do things. Even though I gained weight, I feel it is best for me. I see her in a week and hope she understands that I need this. I feel very strongly that I have PTSD. Wouldn't it be great if she understood this, and I finally get to the bottom of my depression? Praying hard."

"I took Mirtazapine (15 mg) for the first time last night. Felt sleepier and sleepier after 15 minutes and was fast asleep after 30 minutes. My sheets felt a bit softer and the feeling was a bit comparable to being really tired when the sun comes up after a whole night of drinking and then getting in bed. You kind of feel woozy and tired. Anyways, the dreams I had were not more vivid than usual because they are already extremely vivid. Still woke up 5 times from nightmares. When I woke up this morning, I had a headache, a dry mouth, and it was hard to get out of bed. I didn't feel fresh but rather like I could sleep for another 12 hours. All in all, this is a very tolerable drug when I compare it to my first days on Lexapro. Let's see how I adjust to this drug over the next couple of days/weeks, and I'll try to update this accordingly. Me: A 22 y/o man who has ADHD, CPTSD, anxiety, depression and is highly sensitive. I take 5 mg of Lexapro every morning still. Day 1: No great, no bad :)"

"I had a health scare last June, and over the next few months developed PTSD, panic attacks, shaky, jumpy, insomnia, no appetite, constant worry, and fear. These helped with sleep from the first night last September and helped with the anxiety and depression within a few weeks. I then started to get paresthesia, a prickling feeling on the skin, as well as muscle aches, pains, and numbness. I was starting to worry I had MS or something. I kept going with these as they helped a lot of my problems, but the aches and numbness got too much, and I have now been off them for 2 weeks, and my body is feeling much better already. I'm dealing with anxiety attacks and insomnia again, though, so will probably have to try a different antidepressant."

"I was Rx'd Remeron for PTSD physical issues. After years of treatment for vertigo, 'imbalance,' and 'globular' sensation, my doctor prescribed me many medications. This one finally worked! Although I gained 35 pounds because it increases your appetite. I'm so happy to not have vertigo or any other symptoms. We will see how I do off it. I've been off it for 2 months now with no side effects at all :)"

"I wrote on here Sept. 13th, and since then, I have gone back to the doctor, and she listened. She raised my dosage from 30 mg to 45 mg, and I am feeling better again. It has given me my drive back again. Previously, I have had no interest in many things, including my health. Before being on this medicine, I did not care about anything. Doctors would ask me questions, and I would just answer but not care. Now I give them more information. I can't believe the difference this medicine has made. If nothing works for you, try this and give it a couple of months to make a big difference. It is hard to wait so long, but well worth it. I know everyone has different chemistry, and for some, it will not work. I hope you are as lucky as I am to have found it. It really works!"
