"Came off Citalopram, slow taper. Realized quickly that I couldn't survive PTSD, GAD, and OCD without medication. Was put on mirtazapine 15 mg. But I did my research! My fear was weight gain, it almost stopped me from trying it. However, I came across research regarding how mirtazapine crashes your cortisol (which is why it works so well). Apparently, this is what causes the carb cravings. So, I dropped the carbs. It was a tough 2 weeks, but RESULT! Zero craving and rather than gaining weight, I am losing. I gained three stones on the Cit, so that's even better news. I thought that I had to choose between being fat and happy or thin and crazy. Instead, my choice is between carbohydrates or protein. It's important to make sure to get a good multivitamin that includes minerals. Also, eat plenty of green leafy veg (after transition). But apart from that, which is NOTHING compared to cravings, weight gain, or coming off meds, it's a small price to pay. Do your research, it's a total game-changer!"

"I have been on this med for 10 years. I was severely underweight, had severe PTSD and anxiety from the military. I was lucky to sleep 5-7 hours a week. The only side effects I have experienced were weight gain (which I NEEDED) and sleep. I can take it anytime during the day or night, and the sleep doesn't hit me like it did in the beginning. It keeps my mood very even, and I don't have ups and downs. I have gone without it before for several days and other than sleeping, I had no withdrawal symptoms. Please remember that every medicine affects each person differently. After 10 years of taking this med, it still works, and I have no intentions of ever coming off of it. I have recommended this med to several people, and they have had similar experiences. I hope this helps. Get the relief you deserve and need."

"Mirtazapine is a miracle, but you have to take a small dose, meaning about 7.5 mg to 15 mg, no more than that. Larger doses cause too much adrenaline release, so if you gave up on Mirt before, try it again with a pill splitter at a very small dose, just before bedtime. It will help you sleep, and it has virtually the opposite side effects of SSRIs, meaning no sexual side effects, and no anxiety increase - only decrease. I take it for debilitating anxiety just as I described."

"In 2009, I had a severe anxiety attack with increased symptoms over the next year. My family doctor tried so many anti-anxiety/depression medications, none of which worked. I wasn't sleeping, and thus began with my downward spiral. I live in Canada, and Mirtazapine/Remeron was very new, so no doctor was prescribing it. Things got so bad with me that my husband decided to admit me to a clinic in Arizona. That's where I was started on Mirtazapine. When I first started it, I had such bizarre dreams but had the best sleep I had had in over a year. Because of the medication's sedative effect, it did calm me and helped me to sleep, which was exactly what I needed. Once I was able to sleep, it was easier for me to deal with the anxiety attacks - which were not as severe after that. I did have to slowly decrease the dosage, and now take 15mg one night and 30 mg the next. I can honestly say that Mirtazapine saved my life. No other antidepressant/anti-medication helped, and I tried a lot."

"I got put on Mirtazapine 15mg about 28/29 days ago. These are the first antidepressants I have ever been on, but I have also been on propranolol before, and it did not help. So I was really scared about trying these, and honestly I can say it’s helped a lot so far. I have anxiety disorder and panic disorder. I could never normally even go in a car for about 15 minutes without getting panicky, as I had my first panic attack in a car. The other day, I was in one for about 2 hours straight, and I was okay. I never used to go out with friends or family, as I was scared I was going to have a panic attack. And now I have been out with friends and family so much in the last month. So if you're thinking about taking these but you're not sure, please give them a try, as they've really helped so far. I haven't gained any weight yet either, just be careful about eating so much as I have been craving a lot."

"During a really worrying period with one of my children, I found I couldn't sleep and would lie awake with a pounding heart and shaking. This meant I felt terrible during the day, and it just got worse and worse. I eventually was referred to a psychiatrist who prescribed Mirtazapine 15mg. Well, the first night I slept all night! I was very groggy in the morning. Gradually, the grogginess lessened. I found that because I was getting a good night's restful sleep, I started to improve. It really was like a miracle for me. I have been on it now for about 18 months, the family crisis is over, and I want to get off now if I can. So, I have started taking just 7.5mg, will see how I go with that for a while, then hopefully stop altogether."

"I have been happy and laid-back all my life, and a low iron deficiency caused severe anxiety, insomnia, and depression. I tried natural supplements and meditation, etc., but found myself asking the GP for help. I'm only on day 9, so I can't yet comment on serotonin levels, but I haven't had a panic attack, felt anxious, or been depressed since taking them! I too was searching the Internet looking at reviews and only taking on the bad ones, and I can say that after the first dose, I woke up feeling very strange and hated it but pushed through because now I feel more human again, and I can slowly feel my mood getting better, and I'm very early on. Don't be put off by the negative reviews, like I was - if you feel like I did, you've got nothing to lose, and I promise you it will get better."

"Was prescribed mirtazapine after citalopram failed to lift my depression and anxiety. I must say I was in a deep depression, you know, the place where everything is gloomy and hopeless and you just want to crawl into some cave and die. 15mg for the first couple of weeks nearly made me give up hope on this drug. The lethargy, hopelessness, and anxiety deepened. I am into my third week and I have upped the dose to 30mg as prescribed, and I feel completely different. The anxiety is reducing by the day, I feel hopeful, upbeat and for once in eight months, I wake up in the morning with a spring in my step. The zombie days seem to be disappearing. Mirtazapine is working for me and I hope it works for anyone who has started taking it."

"I have experience with using mirtazapine for over 5 years, where I have gone on and off every time I relapsed into anxiety/depression. I noticed a few people blaming this drug because it did not help them on the first night with sleep. Don’t do that! In my experience, this drug helps with sleep, but not always on the first night. I find that sometimes it takes a week or longer before I sleep better when taking this medicine. Also, I have more energy from this medicine. It does not always make you drowsy. If you are depressed, it will give you energy but still let you sleep at night. Lower doses are better for sleep, 7.5-15mg is best for sleep. Don’t judge this drug after one day of no success."

"I have been put on many different anxiety medicines for the past 20 years now, many with bad side effects. Then the doctor tried me on mirtazapine 3 years ago. I love this medicine. It is the only one that works for me with no side effects. I only weigh 100 lbs and take 45 mg a night with no side effects at all from the start of taking it 3 years ago. I sleep like a baby and wake up full of energy."

Mirtazapine "For many years I've been juggling medicines from Lexapro, Xanax, Zoloft, along with Lunesta for sleep. I had anxiety along with depression, couldn't sleep, and was losing weight. Three weeks ago, my doctor prescribed Remeron to me, and within a week, I was like a new person. Depression and anxiety lessened, and my sleep is great. This has been a miracle for me. Yes, I am gaining weight, but I needed to. My quality of life is so much better."

"I wanted to share my experience with Mirtazapine. About two months ago, I started having severe anxiety. I was terrified. I went to the doctor. She asked me if I had any family members that took antidepressants for anxiety, as I have had horrible side effects from SSRIs in the past and my mom takes Mirtazapine for anxiety. So, we decided to try 15mg at night. The first day, I was pretty tired but nothing too crazy, just felt like I hadn’t slept much. The first week, I had a few mild side effects like increased anxiety, feeling kind of out of it. Then after two weeks, I started to notice the anxiety being lifted. I’ve been on it for almost a month now and feel like myself again. I’ve gained maybe 2 pounds, but it’s well worth it! It does make me tired after about an hour of taking it, but I’m not a zombie. I just have an easier time falling asleep at night, which is a bonus! Highly recommend giving it a try, it could be well worth the wait!"

"Mirtazapine has completely eliminated my chronic anxiety. I have PTSD and panic disorder with agoraphobia. The mirtazapine has given me the chance to live life without carrying around all of the toxic anxiety I have been suffering from for decades. I'm so glad that my doctor recommended this drug."

"Mirtazapine was the best decision my doctor ever made. After suffering from severe anxiety and constant panic attacks, I felt like I could cope no more. My doctor prescribed me 15mg of mirtazapine, and I could feel it working after a day. My anxiety has disappeared, and I haven’t had any panic attacks since. The only downside is I have been extremely hungry, but I would rather put on weight than feel like I did."

"I wasn't sure whether to take this. Fluoxetine and propranolol put me in the hospital, but I decided to give it a try. The first week was amazing, I felt so much better. I'm currently in menopause and experiencing menopause anxiety, which I've never had before. I'm now on week 3 and have had a few bad days, but I understand it can take up to 6 weeks to work. All I can say is that if you've tried everything else and it hasn't worked, this antidepressant does. As for the weight gain and hunger, it only lasted the first week and I don't feel like that anymore. Compared to how I felt weeks ago, when I didn't want to be here, this medication has saved my life. I highly recommend it and don't plan on stopping it anytime soon."

Mirtazapine "After 4 LONG years of 'experimenting' with Lexapro, Paxil, and benzos on and off with my regular MD, I decided to see a Psychiatrist that's very popular in my city. I told him my symptoms and that I was also going through Ativan tolerance withdrawal. He prescribed me Remeron and agreed to wean me off the Ativan properly. I don't know why my regular MD didn't try this miracle medicine on me! GRR!! This changed me overnight. It has STOPPED my nervous stomach and I'm eating again. I sleep well too. A few side effects would be the flashing lights you see when you close your eyes the 1st night I took it, and restless legs and vivid dreams but those are slowly disappearing. This medicine has helped me drastically."

"I started taking 15 mg at night about 6 weeks ago for anxiety/insomnia and mood problems. I started to feel some relief after just a few weeks and have begun to feel a lot better as time goes on. My doctor advised me to increase my dosage to 30 mg (1 pill) after 2 weeks, but I found it was too much for me and I got quite overwhelmed by the way I felt while at work one day, which was not a pleasant experience! However, since going back down to half a tablet each night, things have really leveled out for me. My anxiety is much lower and I don't feel depressed at all. At present, the best part for me is being able to sleep well most nights, as lack of sleep was becoming a real problem. I do have to watch my food and alcohol intake, but that's a good thing!"

"I have been on many medications, and this seems to be working the best. So far, so good and only getting better. I have never really been depressed, but I did feel weird and used to worry all the time and couldn't work out why (ANXIETY). I have been misdiagnosed with ADHD and Bipolar. All those medications made me worse (Zyprexa, Lovan, Lithium, Carbamazapine, Effexor). I now take 15mg of mirtazapine before bed and have accomplished more in 6 weeks than I have in years because I don't have that weird feeling hovering around me anymore. I think it would be wise for parents with 'ADHD' kids to get another opinion because it could just be anxiety causing concentration problems."

"After losing my son, I was overcome with anxiety and insomnia. My doctor prescribed several medications, none of which helped with my symptoms. A second doctor prescribed mirtazapine 15. That was 5+ years ago, and it made all the difference. I now regularly fall asleep quickly and sleep through the night. Weight gain occurred but is controllable for me. A couple of years back, I wanted to get off of it and read that a gradual tapering is recommended. I cut back to 7.5, which still helps with the insomnia. I have read where people have great difficulty trying to quit altogether, so I have remained on the 7.5 dosage. I continue on, as I enjoy the sleep cycle, and my current doctor does not tell me to quit. This medication rescued me from a very difficult episode in my life."

"I had anxiety and panic attacks for about 20 years before seeking help. I started therapy and was prescribed an SSRI. It made me sick every time I ate. I kept losing weight. After several attempts at different SSRI medications, I was prescribed 15 mg of Mirtazapine. When I started Mirtazapine, I had lost 12 pounds in about one month from the previous SSRI. Day one of Mirtazapine, I had an appetite. I slept calmly the entire night. Within a week, I was able to try new things out in public, like going to restaurants by myself and signing up with a volunteer organization in which I did not know anyone. I felt like myself for the first time in 20+ years. However, within two weeks, my weight gain was more than what I had lost originally, so I was prescribed a 7.5 mg. Even with the lowest dosage, I gained 40 pounds in one month. I was told to stop taking it. I haven't had a medication that's helped since I stopped taking this in 2023. It was an amazing medication for me except for the weight gain."

"So far so good... been on all sorts of antidepressants and this one works the best! No sexual decrease like others. I do want to eat all the time but I work out and am very active. I sleep so much better now and my anxiety and panic attacks are gone. I was also prescribed 2mg Valium which I rarely take now because of Remeron. Been taking 4 weeks now."

"I was originally put on this to boost my poor appetite-and accidentally changed my life for the better! I sleep through the night, don't have that drugged feeling, I don't get road rage or stress anymore but can still fully feel all human emotions when pressed, including anxiety and anger. Just on a more normal scale."

"Was juggling a family, 30hr p/t job & uni full-time, whilst dealing with immediate relatives that were either ill or dying. Needless to say, I hit rock bottom, was underweight & felt like I was walking the 'Green Mile'! I can only describe the feeling as if my body was running on 'flight' mode. Clearly, the extra adrenaline was needed as I was being pulled from pillar to post with deadlines, deadlines, deadlines. It got too much. No appetite, constant weight of despair on my chest, insomnia, and endless worry. After a week of taking Mirt, the anxieties disappeared as did the despair. Felt normal but not in a drugged-up way. Was able to sleep/wake well and focus."

"After being prescribed Zoloft, Lexapro, etc., over the past 5 years for my 'anxiety', I finally found this medication actually chills my constant anxiety. Mind you, I have never been depressed. I take it at night before bed (15 mg), and it slowly puts me to sleep, unlike Ambien. I do have vivid dreams but I wake up feeling well-rested and with energy. Unlike Ambien, which stayed with me the next day and zapped my energy. I say, please give this a try for your anxiety. If you are more depressed, you might need another medicine. I found all the antidepressants I've tried for my anxiety make me more anxious and, oddly, depressed. I hope this helps those with mild to moderate anxiety, as it did for myself."
