Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation "Amitiza has saved my life... seriously. My problem was so bad that I was in danger of rupturing my colon. I ended up in the ER, and they could not help me, so they had to admit me. Needless to say, drinking a gallon of nasty stuff and the most embarrassing procedure of my life... I stayed up all night, and when they discharged me, the doctor gave me Amitiza to take 2 a day. I would recommend you start at 8 mg and see how that works. 24 for me took some getting adjusted to, so I took 1 a day, and if no bowel movement, then I took the 2nd. Right now, if I do not take 2 a day... I have problems... serious problems. But for me, Amitiza is $24 for 60, but I would pay $200 if that is what it took to NEVER go back to the ER with this problem."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "I tried everything. EVERYTHING. Finally, something that works for me, but it took a few days to kick in—probably because I was so constipated. After that, I've had a great experience. Regular for the first time in over 40 years! I would give this a 10 except it does give me a tiny bit of nausea, especially in the morning. It is pretty minor compared to the pain and bloating of chronic constipation. No bloating! The major drawback is the cost and the fact that insurance is so picky about covering it...and will only do so for a limited amount of time."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "I am a 27-year-old female who suffers from lifelong chronic idiopathic constipation. Much like most of you, I have tried everything the FDA has approved under the sun. Ran out of options and was prescribed Amitiza. I took two capsules the first day and was the sickest I have ever been. Projectile vomiting, shaking, faintness, heart palpitations, tight chest, and liquid stool. I was close to calling 911, but vomiting brought me back to life, so to speak. I completely emptied my bowels, the price of becoming that ill was not worth it. I have stopped taking it and am so heartbroken. I was hoping this would be it. The cure. I wasted so much money on the prescription."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "Have had problems for over 4 years. Nothing worked. Tried everything doctor said (gastro specialist), nothing worked. Finally a PA at a local clinic suggested Amitiza and what a change. No major side effects. Have even lost weight, more energy, no bloating and especially no more digging the crap out just to get relief! No more bleeding and hemorrhoids from straining too much. Made me feel like a totally different woman. It also helped me control my blood sugar better. This is truly a miracle. Would not be without it."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "I have suffered chronic 'idiopathic' constipation since turning 60 years ago. (Note: When doctors say the very technical sounding term 'idiopathic,' that means, 'I don't know, either.) Have tried everything with little or no success: MOM, Miralax, Citrucel, Metamucil, docusate sodium, Senakot, fruit juices, increased hydration, etc. Recently, my current gastroenterologist (who otherwise is fine) prescribed Amitiza. Took it before going to bed around 11:00 P.M. ----- Woke up at 3:00 A.M. with the worst abdominal pain and spasms I've had in my life. Thought about calling an ambulance or driving to the ER, but decided to stay home in case the Amitiza laxative suddenly caused a BM on the way. Sat on the toilet holding on to my abdomen in horrible pain and spasms for several hours. Very little result. Will not take again."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "After being diagnosed with POTS syndrome about two and a half years ago, I developed awful constipation. Like a lot of others said on here, I tried everything! For a while, Miralax twice daily worked, but slowly it stopped. I've tried Citrucel, Metamucil, Milk of Mag, Colace, high fiber diets, and nothing would help. I ended up going to the emergency room after not going for seventeen days, and even an enema did barely anything. I was first put on a low dose of Linzess, but got awful bloating, pains, and diarrhea. Then I got put on the lowest dose of Amitiza and only take it one time daily. It did wonders, and I am one who is incredibly sensitive with meds. I take one before bed with yogurt, which helps soothe any possible nausea."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation "This medication is great! A few years back, I had IBS with diarrhea, but it has since changed to IBS-C. It was so bad. I was always in stomach pain, always felt full, just felt terrible and super backed up. I'm a nurse, so I tried all the non-pharmacological remedies for constipation. So after reading all of the reviews, I made a GI appointment. Thank God I knew about Amitiza because my doctor tried to send me out the door with some pamphlets! Amitiza is a lifesaver. Just don't forget to take with meals so you don't feel nauseous."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "I have been constipated for the past 8 months following an injury that left me with two broken vertebrae. Nothing seemed to help. Went to GI and they ordered a scope. Started me on Amitiza. I had been taking Miralax and Ducolax as well as the occasional stimulant laxative. The day I started on Amitiza I destroyed my bathroom. Very few side effects. I take the 8mg dose. People that complain of bad side effects are probably taking the higher dose. It's literally like the scene from 300 where the Spartan kicks the Persian in the chest and he falls down the well. It's like Amitiza is doing that but in my colon."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "The first round of 8 mcg twice daily produced a bowel movement the next day, but further use has not helped. I will increase the dosage to 16 mcg, in hopes it will work once again. From other comments, there seems to be quite a bit of leeway in dosing and in combining with other things to alleviate chronic constipation. I experienced no side effects from the 8 mcg twice daily."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "Incredible experience. I started having chronic constipation shortly after joining the military. I had intense constipation all the time and was completely dependent on laxatives. After one year, I had a colonoscopy to see what the problem was, but there was nothing. I've met with a dietitian, made a food log, tried tons of fiber, and supplements, but nothing worked. After one more year, Miralax stopped working, and I was prescribed Amitiza. Amitiza immediately made me regular, I've only taken four pills total, after three weeks, and I've been the most regular ever in two years. Only fault is it makes me nauseous for a couple of hours. I wish I had this years ago!"

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "I've had irritable bowel syndrome and chronic constipation my entire life. Now at 23, after exhausting all over-the-counter and homeopathic remedies to no avail, I've decided to try a prescription. Overall, it works great and I don't plan to get off of it. What I have now is more like diarrhea than anything, but I'll take that over going up to 20 days without a bowel motion any day! I do get nausea about 30 minutes after I take it, and it gives me bad gas sometimes, but none of that is worth getting off of it. If you are serious about to give up on life because of constipation, this medicine is for you! I recommend it. I do also take Metamucil about every other morning, which helps the diarrhea. Also, the website for this product offers a $35 off prescription card."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "I used this drug for chronic constipation for years with good results, stopping after I retired and didn't seem to need it anymore. More recently, I have needed it, and it still works for the most part. You do need to drink a full glass of water with it, per instructions, though a 'glass' can be as little as 6 or 8 ounces. If you don't take it with a meal, take it with a big spoonful of peanut butter or almond butter, or you will likely have nausea. That is the one side effect I have noticed, but I like peanut/almond butter anyway, so it's not a problem. I'm sad that my insurance is going to make me 'try' Linzess now instead of Amitiza; I'm a bit leery of that product after reading the reviews."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "I have been on Amitiza for nearly 8 years. I take three tablets, 24 mcg, daily; however, I only take it at bedtime. If I, for some reason, have to take it during the day because I missed my bedtime dose, I get very nauseous, gag, and diarrhea. I strongly suggest taking this medicine when you are ready to sleep. The other problem is that I need three tablets daily, and it is extremely expensive."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "I am 21 years old and I have struggled with Chronic Idiopathic Constipation my entire life. I was prescribed 24 mcg of Amitiza and took it for a year and a half. Overall, I had a positive experience with it and I recommend it to other people. The first two weeks I was on it, I experienced some intense nausea but that subsided after my body adjusted, just make sure you take it with a full meal. I also suggest making sure you are consuming enough water throughout the day. Amitiza worked very well for me in the beginning but throughout my time, I needed to ensure I was drinking enough water in order for it to work properly. The only reason I am switching to Linzess is because my insurance no longer covers Amitiza :/. Hope my experience helps someone out there!"

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "I have been taking this medicine, 24 mcg once a day for a week now. Nothing has happened yet. I drink 1 to 2 quarts of water a day, on the FODMAP diet, eat tofu, fresh fruits, and fresh vegetables. Also eat a lot of chicken. I have had no luck so far. I have left 3 messages with my doctor's nurse and no callbacks yet. I feel bloated, full of gas, and feel miserable. So I am stuck taking laxatives, Epsom salt enemas, or citrate mag (awful tasting stuff ever), then feeling sick all the next day with an upset tummy and sitting on the throne off and on all day. I clean myself out about every 3 to 4 days because I feel miserable and sluggish, and it starts all over again after cleaning myself out. I have had this IBS-C for about 20 years now. It ruins my life!"

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation "I started taking Amitiza about 4 months ago. It has been a miracle worker for me. I have had IBS for over 20 years. I just turned 40 last week and decided I had to figure something out, the doctors just do not take me seriously. For the first 3 months, I took 2 pills a day. Then I switched to 1 in the morning and benefiber in the evening, and it's the same result. I go at least once a day, some days twice. I totally recommend it. It's better than what any doctor has ever done for me."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "Amitiza is GREAT! My constipation began 11 years ago at the age of 20, which caused me to deal with very bad fissures. I hated going to the bathroom. I would be in the bathroom for literally an hour to an hour and a half, mentally trying to prepare myself for what would occur. I began taking laxatives every other day just to get some relief, but yet I still had unhealed fissures. When I finally was prescribed Amitiza, I was scared to go to the bathroom as I mentally had to prepare myself, and to my surprise, it didn't hurt and I felt normal. I wanted to cry. I wasn't in pain. I still tend to feel slight nausea for a little while, though I eat with the meds and drink plenty of fluids, but I will take that over constipation and pain."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation "I was diagnosed with IBS when I was 26. I am now 37. It has only been the last year and a half that my IBS decided to seriously kick in. I was going up to 7 days with no bowel movement, and when it did come, the only thing I can compare it to was labor pains. My insurance finally decided they would pay for the Amitiza. I have been on it just over a month now, and the results have been wonderful. I am more regular, the longest I go is 3 days but usually daily, and there is no pain associated with it. Thanks Amitiza, you have been a godsend to me."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "I noticed in the previous reviews that nausea and headache are a problem. I had those too when I first started using Amitiza, but I have learned that you MUST take it with a FULL meal and drink lots of water, and both side effects won't happen. I love the results!"

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Opioid-Induced Constipation "My doctor has me on an opioid for severe spinal pain, which has caused severe constipation! So he prescribed Amitiza, 24 mcg 2 times a day. Well, now I am not sure I will continue taking it. When I first began taking Amitiza, it worked great, so my doctor wrote up a script for it. Well, now it hardly works at all! Constipation is nearly a daily situation for me and a painful one at that. I am miserable and frustrated! It has also messed up my appetite, I can barely eat food, and when I do, it makes me nauseated, and my tummy hurts as well. I am sick to my stomach if I eat and if I don't eat. I feel sick from an overload of toxin build-up (maybe I am imagining that a bit)! It is pretty messed up when you fear eating and fear not eating!?"

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "I have been on laxatives forever. Specifically, Perdiem. I take 3 Perdiem and 1 Amitiza at bedtime and go every morning. The Perdiem (similar to Senokot) was starting to not work as well after 25 years, and once I added the Amitiza, all is well. I am trying to cut back on the laxative now. My doc wants me to take Linzess, but I'm reading how many people are gaining weight. My only complaint with Amitiza is the gas, so I am reluctant to take it in the morning."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Opioid-Induced Constipation "I have seen some of the comments on here about mood changes and how their doctors said that is not a side effect. WRONG. If you have a specific mood disorder I highly suggest to avoid the drug to avoid a crisis. Here is a few of extreme side effects this drug can have. "Serious side effects of Amitiza: Severe diarrhea; Swelling of arms and/or legs; Changes in mental health; Mood changes" I wanted to start the medication because I take 80mg of Oxycodone and 30mg XR of morphine a day and I cannot not go at all without assistance. Laxatives do not work anymore and the pain and hassle of enemas and suppositories' are getting to be the worst. I am still unsure about what to do ….."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation "I have had a pain in my left lower abdomen for a month and a half now. I finally went to the doctor yesterday, and he told me it sounds like IBS. I have a GI appointment just to make sure. He gave me Amitiza to try until then. I was weary to try Amitiza because so many reviews talked of bad side effects. I ate a very full meal and took it last night. This morning, I had no pain for the first time in a month and a half. I felt it some during the day, but nothing like it has been. Definitely a miracle drug! I had little side effects, some nausea and a bit of feeling 'not all there.' But that was just a short time, and it all went away. I can definitely handle the side effects when it works so well. I hope this review helps."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Chronic Idiopathic Constipation "I was nervous taking this after reading the reviews, but this medicine has been great! I first started out taking the 8 mg twice a day, and was using the bathroom every third day. I moved up to the 24 mg twice a day, and I actually use the bathroom once a day. The first time I took it, I did have stomach cramping during the night, but that just lasted for one night. I have had no side effects whatsoever. My stool is actually what it is supposed to look like and I feel great. I used to be on Zelnorm and I miss that so much, but this medicine seems to do its trick. Hopefully, this one will stay on the market. Don't be afraid of trying this at all after reading some other reviews."

Amitiza (lubiprostone) for Opioid-Induced Constipation "I had a tummy tuck on Dec 18. The surgery was painful, but the constipation from opioids from the surgery was just as bad. My plastic surgeon wasn't familiar with treating OIC, so I called my primary care physician. She gave me Amitiza 24 mcg. It took almost two days, but it was amazing, and I was so thankful. I had to remain on opioids for three weeks, and the Amitiza worked so well I haven't had any issues!! Thank you, Amitiza!!!"
