"It definitely works! Took with Zzzquil before bed and slept fantastically! The next night, I only took Mucinex before bed and slept only 2 hours! But the cough and cold were gone faster than ever before."

"I took this medicine (2 pills) at 9 PM. I went up to bed at 10:30 and was not able to sleep all night. I tossed and turned, felt wide awake, and I am now at work. It did clear my sinuses, and my severe headache is gone. It also made me feel jittery or like I am experiencing anxiety. I am definitely only going to take this first thing in the morning."

"I can't seem to see the same results as others. I've been to the urgent care in my area recently for bronchitis, and after giving me a nebulizer treatment, they sent me on my way with a suggestion of Mucinex. Man, this stuff works so well, I haven't seen any issues with sleep or feeling jittery. The package does mention to take with a full glass of water and to stay hydrated. Maybe that's something the others are missing?"

"I caught the flu last week, and after 4 days of congestion to the point I thought my head would explode, I took some double-strength Mucinex. The pharmacist told me it was as strong as 12 cough syrups and to take it before I went to bed that very night, but after coming here first and reading reviews which claim insomnia, I decided to take it the next morning. Wow! I can breathe out of my nose, and I'm definitely feeling a lot better. The only problem is that it seems to have some sort of peppy ingredient in it that dries you out quickly if you're not actively drinking through the day. Still, a million times better than Lemsip!"

"Bad case of bronchitis and sinus pressure. I took Mucinex DM, 1 pill every 12 hours, for a week. I would fall asleep fine but wake up 3-4 hours later and could not get back to sleep. I ran out of DM, and for the last few days took the Mucinex D instead. Not much sleep the first night, NO sleep at all last night combined with a lot of post-nasal drip and the jitters. So glad I finally figured it out, as I'm a walking zombie right now. I will never take Mucinex D past the morning hours again."

"I have had a stuffy nose for over a month, been on 2 different antibiotics and various antihistamines and decongestants. After the second dose of Mucinex D, I can breathe again. Took the first dosage four hours before bedtime, and a hit of Nyquil that night, and I slept great. I'm sorry that I did not try this a month ago."

"I have had severe earaches now for almost a year. I went to my doctor, and she said I had a lot of fluid in my ear canal. So she suggested I take Mucinex-D. After taking one dose, I could tell a huge difference. When I begin to have the symptoms again, I automatically go buy my favorite medication, Mucinex-D."

"Have not had sleep for two nights because of a terrible cough. Took Mucinex D today at 2 PM and felt good. Like a new person. It's now 11 PM and the cough is back, so another night of no sleep. Do I take another Mucinex D at 2 AM? Don't know if it will keep me awake or not. Choice: continue coughing with no sleep or no coughing with no sleep!"

"Cleared up my congestion. I too didn't realize it would leave me sleepless. I am sick and want to sleep so badly but cannot. It's 5 AM. I have slept 2 hours in the last 24 hours due to this medication. I feel I should be sleeping off this cold and cannot. I agree with the other commenters. Take this only in the morning!!!"

"I was diagnosed with pneumonia. My doc gave me antibiotics but also told me to take Mucinex D twice a day with the antibiotics. Well, I took my first dose at 8 PM, it's currently 11:30 PM, and I'm wide awake. All I want is sleep and I can't, my cough has subsided with random coughs here and there, and my congestion is better... but I need sleep to get better. I don't plan to take this tomorrow night.... ughhh... I'm miserable. The pseudoephedrine is the ingredient that keeps you awake."

"Mucinex D worked great to clear up my chest congestion that two rounds of antibiotics didn't touch. But I didn't know that a side effect was insomnia. So, although I started feeling better soon after taking it last night, I was well aware of how good I was feeling right on up to 3 AM! I asked the pharmacist at our local store if Mucinex D could have caused the insomnia, and she said yes, and not to take it at night."

"Mucinex works, allows your cough to loosen up all the mucus you feel weighing your chest down. I was congested for a good month and on antibiotics, used over-the-counter drugs, and nothing was working for me. I decided to use Mucinex, at this point, I had nothing to lose. Within the first couple of hours, this medication allowed the mucus to cough up easier. The downfall is, don't take it at night as it will keep you up and still continue to increase your cough in order for you to get rid of your congestion! My advice: take it early in the morning with breakfast, and if you can't sleep, drink lots of fluids so you can get it out of your system faster."

"This has been a life-changing pill for me. Unlike others, I did not feel that it kept me up at night. I took one at 11 PM and fell right asleep after. It was one of the greatest sleeps I had ever had. This has been a real game changer for my cough and congestion."

"Avoid. I feel like I am on speed. In fact, I told this to my husband the night before, when I couldn't sleep. 9 a.m., and I am currently on night 3 of sleeplessness, as I only now thought to look up side effects. I am livid. Who on earth would want to be unable to sleep when sick?!? I'm mad my husband didn't buy the medicine I requested! He actually told the pharmacist my symptoms, and this is what was recommended. It hasn't done anything except keep me awake for 3 days. I've been congested with terrible sinus headaches. This medication hasn't touched it... As a result, I still have this sinus congestion with terrible pressure headaches, only now I also feel extremely anxious, alert, and my eyeballs feel as though they're going to shrivel up."

"This drug works wonders. Clears me right up and loosens my mucus so that I’m feeling myself by the end of the week and back to normal instead of feeling the absolute same (if not worse) and trying to book a last minute appointment with my physician. For any of you who expect to feel normal in just a few short hours and want to sleep like a baby after taking it at 9 PM, you’re being unrealistic. Read up on the drugs you take before putting them into your body - the pseudoephedrine will keep you awake, so take it in the morning."

"Great for congestion, but I haven't slept for several days. I even stopped the second dose and took the pill at 7 a.m., fell asleep normally, but wide awake by 2 a.m. Fourth night like this, but I am hoping to avoid sinusitis by taking this."

"Thankful I found this site to calm my nerves. I took Mucinex D around 11 PM and fell asleep for about an hour, woke up to my whole body shaking. Of course, started to think of the worst, so made the shakes worse. Then realized it was a part of the side effects of Mucinex D. I will no longer be taking."

"Awful. Yes, this medication did clear up my cough, BUT the side effects were awful! I was extremely jittery, lethargic, anxious, and then became nauseous as well. I would not take this medication again."

"I wish people would stop posting “Stay away from this.” It all depends on the person, your symptoms, and if it’s worth it. Yes, the pseudoephedrine will keep you up. It’s a stimulant, and it’s the reason you have to sign for this drug...because it falls into an amphetamine class. For me, it’s been great. I had horrible sinus pressure around my nose that was making my teeth, jaw, and head hurt. I’m fairly certain this drug is helping with that, and it was painful! Now it’s only a little twingy. It’s also helped to reduce my runny nose to a trickle and not a faucet. It’s been worth it for me. It’s important to educate yourself about drugs so you know when is the best time to take it, and you don’t want to take this at night unless you’re so miserable that you won’t mind not sleeping to feel better."

"I am up in the middle of the night wondering why I'm still awake after 3 hours. In reference to the majority of Mucinex DM users, I now see why. My heart speeding up, then slowing down suddenly, was very noticeable. Dang it!"

"For those experiencing nervousness and jitters, just keep in mind pseudoephedrine is a stimulant drug similar to amphetamine and methamphetamine. All cold drug names with a 'D' after them have pseudoephedrine, so get the same drug without the 'D' in its name."

"It's worth buying the day and night Max Strength to get you going again. It does make you have dreams and talk in your sleep, but I'd rather have that than coughing with a runny nose. It seems to dry up the mucus real quick. So, I recommend the day and night if you want the full 24-hour effect, and I only take one set of pills for the day and one set of pills for the night. Thanks, Mucinex!"

"First time ever taking Mucinex D! Took two pills as directed, and it did clear some sinus pressure during the day. Following directions 12 hours later and took my two pills dose at 10 PM. I've been clear in my sinus, but tossing and turning all night! It is now 2:05 AM! Insomnia was a side effect, so did not read about it until now, since I can't sleep! So, yes, Mucinex D does work, just do not take it at night as directed. Unless you need to be awake while others sleep, in which case, this will definitely keep you up, all alert!"

"I think I much like the other people on this site who are up at 4 AM still trying to go to sleep. It didn't help my cough at all. It actually made it worse. I've had really bad anxiety all night and probably won't sleep for the next 5 days."

"I read all the information on the previous pages. The box of Mucinex D that I just purchased has a much higher mg of active ingredients than what was reviewed. Mine has 1200 mg guaifenesin and 120 mg pseudoephedrine HCl per pill. The information on the other page was regarding HALF those amounts. So be sure to take the correct dosages into account."
