"The cardiologist prescribed 120 mg from the hospital. It definitely helps to calm my heart down when my heart rate is high, but the dose is too high and knocks me out for around 16 hours. So I tried an experiment, I opened up a capsule and only used half. I take it an hour before bedtime, which gives me a great night's sleep. Usually, I have to take a prescription sleep medication to sleep. If I take it during the day, it takes away all my energy. I can't function or it makes me go to sleep. This is a warning to anyone on this medication, for some people, it may not have any effect on them."

"I was put on this medicine in combination with atenolol for frequent PVCs. I've had an irregular heartbeat for 20 years and have been on several different meds. This combination of beta blocker/calcium channel blocker seems to be working. I have had some PVCs here and there, but definitely fewer since the diltiazem was added. I do feel like I've put on a few pounds since starting the medicine-like I'm puffy in the face and my ankles have been swelling. Other than that, I'm OK."

"I've been on Dilt-XR for 7 years. Works for me. Then my medical insurance switched manufacturers. Same drug, different manufacturers. I immediately had side effects: face flushing, fatigue, strange dreams, headaches. Immediately called pharmacy. Pharmacy switched Dilt-XR back to the original manufacturer, and my side effects went away. 10/15/21."

"Had my first bout of AFib at 26 years old, had Cardizem IV drip for about 24 hours and went back into rhythm. Got prescribed Toporol and didn't like it. So sluggish and tired. 2nd attack was 33 years old. Was near 200 bpm, pretty scary! Same Cardizem drip and several shots of Toporol. New cardiologist prescribed Diltiazem XR 240, and man, I love this drug. Zero side effects and the best BP and resting HR I’ve had in years. I can’t speak highly enough. Substantially improved my quality of life."

"I have permanent AFib, with no episodes of extremely high pulse rates. I have taken Diltiazem for years and now take 120 nightly. Doctors have approved dosage declines in the past to counteract a too-low pulse rate (40 bpm). My pulse rate is now 50-70 bpm. What's troubling is that I will come back from a walk, breathless, and my pulse will be in the usual range."

"Worked to convert afib, then dropped blood pressure too low. Doc adjusted med, but I had the worst headaches every day just in the week I was on it. I had to lay down due to headache and very tired feeling each day. Looks like it works for many who have posted. Trying metoprolol. See it has a less favorable review, but my hubby has taken it for years with no side effects. Hoping for a great outcome."

"Have been taking this since March when I was first diagnosed with A-fib. Took a good 4 days to get my heart rate under 100 bpm. This medication slowed my heart rate down too much at 180 mg (slowed to 37 bpm), so my doctor lowered it to 120 mg, and (at the time) I was almost 300 pounds. I have been able to lose some weight and just recently had them stop this medicine, providing my resting HR doesn’t go over 100 bpm again. This medicine sucked the life out of me, making my legs feel weak and needing way more sleep than normal. I couldn’t walk very fast or for very long. Now, without being on it, I am feeling much better. I guess it did its job, but it’s not fun being on it."

"Gave me headaches. Didn't fix the A-fib, but I'm going in for cardioversion (2nd time) and had the cardioablation, so mine apparently is persistent. I like Bystolic better, no side effects. I got the generic since it was covered."

"Had an afib event 3 years ago, and diltiazem kept me out of afib. Now I have developed atrial flutter, and the diltiazem doesn't keep me out of it. The cardiologist put me on flecainide while continuing with the diltiazem. I am scheduled for an ablation. I keep going into flutter and have to be electrically cardioverted."

"Atrial fibrillation due to chemotherapy. After lisinopril, metoprolol, and losartan, I started on this - and I loved it - dizzy at first, but it worked itself out after a few days - heart rate was way too low at first, but resolved itself - just as it all worked out and I went for my first bike ride, I developed a rash - stomach - back - neck - legs, then buttocks. So on day 4, I'm stopping. Bummer."

"I have been taking Diltiazem 24H ER (CD) 300MG CP for about a year. I take it in the morning, and it seems I go into AFIB shortly after taking it, even when I wake up feeling fine. I have also been given extra 30MG tablets to be taken 'as needed,' and I've thought about taking it after taking the 24-hour pill and the AFIB kicks in. But now I'm thinking I should skip the 24-hour pill and just take the 30MG tablet when and if the AFIB kicks in."

"I have been taking 180 mg of Diltiazem XR for about a week, and the side effects are awful (flushing, rapid heartbeat, extreme tiredness, shortness of breath) for about 5-6 hours after taking it and have continued to be in Afib on it. Have been in the ER twice this week with HR 175+. Will see the cardiologist this week to get another, more effective, fewer side effects medication that works for my body."

"I've been taking 180 mg capsules twice a day for a year. I requested to lower it to 120 mg twice a day and did not feel any different. I then requested to lower to 40 mg tablets three times a day. I was denied for 6 months since 120 mg capsules x2 a day was the lowest dosage prescribed. Eventually, I was allowed to try the 40 mg pill 3x a day. I checked my BP and heart rate every day for a month and my BP was 120/xx or lower and HR never went above 78. So now I will try to stop the diltiazem completely for a month and monitor my BP & HR. If it goes up, I will continue taking the medication...if not, then why bother. I exercise regularly and eat moderately at 75 years old and 150 lbs."

"Had one AFib episode and trip to the emergency room, took a couple of days to sort it out. Then my cardiologist put me on beta-blockers. Those made it nearly impossible to bicycle, any hill was just so very hard to get up, and that's my main form of exercise, so it wasn't good. Cardiologist switched me to diltiazem 120mg extended-release, and since then, it's been great. I can bike hard and haven't had an AFib repeat. Haven't noticed any side effects. Didn't have blood pressure issues before this, and don't have any now that I'm on it."

"Been on it 10 days now for PAC's. Has done NOTHING for me, plus I don't feel like myself. I'm on 120 mg extended release. I complained to the doctor, but he hasn't changed it. I think he prescribed the wrong med for me because this has done nothing."

"Still no relief for A-fib. Or B/P. Still have high blood pressure. This medication has me craving lemons, pickle juice, O.I., of which I am drinking daily! Not sure why? If it means I should tell my doctor. Thanks for any feedback help."

"After 5 days of 120 mg of Diltiazem, I have bouts of vertigo, which is awful. Stopped the drug three times and restarted, and vertigo returned after 5 days. That's it for me, threw them away."

"Diltiazem 300 mg increased to 360 mg. Extreme breathlessness when doing anything physical. Two cardioversions for Afib. Didn't work. BP lower. Oxygen levels around 90 to 92. Why am I so breathless? Have only taken for 4 days."
