"When I first started taking Bentyl, it worked very well. Aside from the side effects of being drowsy and lightheaded, it did the job it was meant to. However, over the past year, problems started to occur more frequently, thus stressing me out and making the cycle continue. I would up the dose, but side effects worsened. Overall, it takes off the edge. I give it a 7."

"I went back to this due to side effects with another medication. Bentyl is cheap and works, but the side effects make me dizzy and tired. I'll keep taking it because it's the only thing that works. Must take 2-4 times a day to not have cramping, but definitely works for cramping like nothing else."

"I'm still waiting to see if it's Celiac disease or inflammatory IBS-D. After 3 weeks of constant diarrhea, dehydration, and a trip to the ER, tons of blood work all negative, and stool samples all negative, and 16 lb weight loss, I got in with a GI doctor. I'm waiting back for my inflammatory test and celiac disease test, but in the meantime, my GI doctor put me on Bentyl 20 mg up to 4 times a day to help with the diarrhea, which is the cause of the weight loss in only 3 weeks. It's worked wonders so far, I haven't had any diarrhea. I've only been on it 48 hrs now. The only side effect I have noticed is sometimes it makes my heart race a little for an hour. I have a follow-up with my GI in 3 weeks and am hoping to come off of it and be back to eating normal, he thinks I had a viral infection that caused inflammatory IBS-D."

"I've been suffering for two weeks before I got prescribed Bentyl. Bentyl has helped greatly and helped with the urgency I was feeling. I don't like the drowsy feeling it leaves, but I suppose I'd rather have the tiredness than the constant problem of 'going'. Bentyl has been a good medicine for me. I recommend it to others who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome or other problems!"

"So I took just one dose and spent the entire night afterwards hearing someone in my house that wasn't there. I could not sleep. I heard footsteps, heard my doors open and close. Of course, they were not, I clearly was hallucinating. Never had this before, except on Bentyl and when my doctor tried me on Singulair. Prior to those medications (I was not taking them at the same time, it was years apart), I never had a mental health issue or hallucinations. Never again. Granted, I'm sensitive to a lot of medication, either having rare reactions or allergic reactions often."

"I had had early morning diarrhea (no pain or discomfort) for about six months. MD recommended colonoscopy, which produced a diagnosis of microcolitis. I had already treated this with daily Imodium and was doing okay. After the colonoscopy, I had horrible gas pains whenever I engaged in aerobic exercise, and sometimes just eating would instigate them. I was given Pepto-Bismol 4X a day-stopped diarrhea, but not gas pains. Only a heat pad or hot bath would do that. Then I was given dicyclomine, and after a week, the pain subsided. I still feel a knot of gas in LLQ, but it no longer hurts!"

"I’ve had stomach issues for years. Had all the testing, camera down the throat to stomach and colonoscopy. I was good. Nothing wrong. So I changed my diet and started juicing. All organic and celery juice every morning before anything. And gluten-free eating too. Still sometimes I would get the stomach aches. The doctor gave me the Bentyl, and it has stopped the pain. As long as I took the pill before the stomach ache got too bad. It has been a life-changing pill. Eating clean definitely has changed my life too. Now my entire family eats this way. I had a blood plaque test with my regular blood test, I have 0 percent plaque. I had no side effects from this drug. Please give it a try if you are having issues. Good luck."

"Just started taking it, and it really hasn't helped much at all. One nasty side effect I'm having is that every time I take a pill, I have a fever spike that runs up to around 101, and my vision is blurred. I have no idea why it's doing this to me."

"I took them for a week. They did not help at all. I have severe constipation, bloating, or stomach pain; worsening of diarrhea or other irritable bowel symptoms. I stopped taking them tonight. Ask the M.D. to prescribe another medication. The pain I feel right now is excruciating."

"I went into the ER for food poisoning. The doctor gave me Bentyl in my IV, and I was released a few hours later. I took another Bentyl, which the doctor told me to do. Then, 8 hours later, another one. I had debilitating anxiety and panic attacks for 3 weeks after taking this medicine. This medicine made me feel out of body. Never would recommend it."

"I have tried so many medications to find relief from IBS-D, and I am still suffering. Bentyl gave me no relief and actually increased my diarrhea! I could have dealt with the side effects if I had gotten relief from the diarrhea. I can't say that I blame the medication, it's just that I haven't found relief with any product to date. I'll keep searching!"

"My pain started in February 2021. After many E.R. visits, I was referred to a gastro specialist who ordered many tests, including a stool sample, which concluded I had C-Diff. Even after antibiotics, I was still having severe pain-just slightly different. It felt like someone was squeezing something inside me. I'd get spots of burning pain as well as double-me-over/can't move pain. I was prescribed Bentyl, and it has been my savior. If I wake in the middle of the night from severe pain, I reach for my Bentyl, and within 10-20 minutes, the pain is relieved enough to go back to sleep. It doesn't take it away completely, however, it takes the pain from an excruciating 10 to a tolerable 2 very quickly."

"Been on meds 48 hours and still have pain. It controls spasms a little, but my heartburn is out of control. Librax took care of all my symptoms, but doc switched me to Bentyl because Librax is addictive. I can't believe I'm back to severe pain. What meds work like Librax? Exhausted from severe pain."

"Ah, Bentyl. I have mixed feelings about it. Since being hospitalized for 4 days because of an intestinal blockage that caused an infection, non-stop diarrhea and vomiting with symptoms of sepsis, this has been a lifesaver. Literally. I take 20 mg, sometimes I'll cut it in half and take 10 mg in the morning and the other before bed. Always 30 min before a meal. Has it decreased my anxiety before eating out? Heck yeah. Has my IBS been a little more under control than before? Absolutely. Let's talk side effects. Yes, I may giggle or cry out of nowhere. Sometimes I can feel disoriented or confused, especially once it kicks in and for the following hour or two. Hot flashes, don't recommend taking Bentyl if you plan to be under the sun all day. Yeah, you will feel like you're dehydrated. It depends on how much I've eaten the day before or if I decided to have caffeine before taking it (bad idea). Tachycardia sometimes, but that all gets blocked out by no more diarrhea or running to a bathroom."

"I have used many medications to manage my IBS, from Bentyl to Donnatal. The Donnatal worked best for me, but they don't really make it anymore, and it's $700+ for a month's script. After ending up in the urgent care for stomach issues related to my IBS, the doctor prescribed Bentyl 10 mg Q.I.D. At first, I thought it wouldn't work, as Donnatal has always been my go-to. However, I was pleasantly surprised; Bentyl really works for me, and it's very cheap. I don't get any side effects except extremely slight drowsiness. I'd recommend Bentyl to anyone with IBS. It really does work, and I really thought it wasn't as good as the Donnatal - Bentyl is cheap, works just as well, and is easily available."

"I do take Bentyl on occasion for IBS, but wondering if anyone with the Eustachian Tube problem is seeing any relief with Bentyl. My ears are driving me crazy. I did have a huge weight loss several years ago, and my NET seems to think this created my ear problem. Weight gain seems to be my only option at this point, but I am comfortable at my current weight. Anybody else having the echo/roaring problem?"

"I went to the ER on Easter with severe abdominal pain. Had a UTI and severe constipation. They said everything checked out okay. No hernias, etc. Was given this med, and within an hour of taking it, my muscles became so rigid I felt like I was being paralyzed. All I could think to do is lay down and let that medicine get out of me. Very scary. I will never touch this medicine again."

"I just started taking this medicine today because every other medicine I've been on hasn't worked, and I've been so sick with stomach pains and running to the bathroom. My doctor said to take 1 or 2. I took 2 at lunch, does that mean I should take 2 at dinner as well? I can't take the stomach pains anymore. Do you guys think this will help? Thanks."

"I have been taking Bentyl for a month. What a godsend! I take 10 mg two times daily. I have had no issues, it stopped the cramps. Stools are still irregular, sometimes diarrhea. I am new to IBS. Going to talk to my doctor about what trigger foods cause it to start."

"I went to the E.R. with a severe case of food poisoning, after hours of fluids, IVs, various drugs, they were able to get it to stop. I filled my prescription for bentyl the next day, 20mg two times a day. After about 45 minutes I started getting bad cramps and the worse diarrhea ever. I do not recommend this to anyone."

"I found out in April that my rheumatoid factor was 48, and that set the ball in motion. I have other disorders, most likely, they are all autoimmune diseases. I used to weigh almost 300 pounds, but I worked hard after my back surgery, and I got to a happy 160 lb. Now, whatever is going on with my bowels causes constant diarrhea, tons of gas, and severe abdominal pain. I just started Bentyl yesterday, and my diarrhea is 100 times worse, why, and will this go away as my body adjusts?"

"Double-edged sword for me. I take it for Crohn's disease. If I start cramping up and take Bentyl, it does typically help with bowel spasms fairly well. On the flip side of that, it tends to make me a bit drowsy and kind of lethargic, and occasionally causes panic attacks and anxiety that last for a few hours. Kinda have to weigh the risks with rewards though."

"I took Bentyl for IBS for years, it was the best medicine for me. In 2018, it was discontinued in Canada. They have the generic, but it's not the same. I'm so upset. I wish I could order online from the US, I think you need a prescription."

"This medication didn’t really work for me for my IBS at all, really, and actually made me feel intoxicated. Not horrible, but it would make it really hard for me to drive. Make sure you know how you react to this before taking it and going out. Hope it works for you."

"Within 3 hours of taking this medicine, I had hallucinations and a state of mania. Fainted, hit my head on the floor. No recollection of events for two days. The side effects outweigh what this drug fixes. I do not recommend this drug to anyone."
