Dicyclomine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I was prescribed Bentyl for vomiting and having diarrhea. I had been having severe cramping and was having sporadic severe cramping during this bout of illness. I have learned more about this medication reading the comments here that I learned reading the 'literature' on it (thank you all). Based on what I have learned, this medication may be something I will want to continue in an as needed basis. It helps urgency as well as constipation (I have MS, so these are very important), gas, and even my menstrual cramping! Not a cure, but a great help!"

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I am 82 years old. Had to be hospitalized after taking this medication, dicyclomine, with 3 other new medicines. I had bad hallucinations. I saw people everywhere. Saw rats on the floor. Fell down several times. It now says on my charts to never take this again."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I have battled my stomach problems since I was a child. Then, one day my doctor prescribed me Bentyl, and I can really say when I have episodes, this medication is definitely my lifesaver. My stomach problems first started out as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and now I was recently diagnosed with diverticulitis, and the cramps and attacks that come with that disease are at least 10 times more intense than just IBS. This medication truly helps out a lot. There are times that I have to take two 20 mg tablets at a time. This medicine gets my recommendation 100%."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I have had surgeries that led to a few different infections in my bowel, which has led to severe 10 out of 10 pain when passing bowel motion. The theory is scar tissue has caused this condition, but after all the tests, there is no way to verify because it is in the small intestine. Years of pain, three trips to the ER with horrific pain, and a decade later, a doctor put me on this. This medicine has been a miracle, I have never had any pain since. I went from suicidal to being able to function and even go on vacation. However, there have been side effects. I have had blurred vision, I am generally lethargic at all times, and nausea. All said and done, the side effects are nothing compared to the other pain, but they are bad at times."

Dicyclomine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I've been on Bentyl for 3 1/2 years, and my IBS is so much better when I take my pill. Initially, I had severe dry mouth that lasted for about 3 months, but I no longer have that side effect. I take a pill one hour before I eat, and I can pretty much eat without worrying about a flare-up. If I eat a meal or snack with little or no fiber, my stomach gurgles and I get gas, but no diarrhea."

Dicyclomine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I took 20 mg on the first day and 10 mg the next day, and it was too much. I felt like I was on a drug that was cranking up my nervous system. Bentyl caused me serious side effects: anxiety, pain in the lower abdomen, congestion in my nose like I had allergies, and cognitive impairment in the form of forgetfulness. Never again. This drug is not for me."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I was in the ER twice in the same 24-hour period with gastroenteritis caused by some viral thing. I was prescribed this dicyclomine upon discharge of my second stay, and it works very well for the cramps, but there were side effects that are not worth it to me. I’ve had the feeling confused, fogginess, blurred vision, and hallucinations. The hallucinations are super trippy, I’m talking to people who aren’t even there… That’s not cool."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I had horrible stomach pain before, during, and after bowel movements for 3 years before I saw a GI doctor and was diagnosed with colitis (not ulcerative). The GI doc prescribed me these after she saw spasms during my colonoscopy. They definitely help take the edge off. I use them a lot to nip the problems in the bud, so to speak. Once in a while, though, my symptoms are too severe for this medicine to work. But 90% of the time, this saves me a lot of discomfort."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I was having trouble with bad cramps and loose stools daily for two months, going to the doctors weekly with no answers. Finally, I went to a GI doctor who prescribed dicyclomine. This medicine has worked wonders. It's been two days and I no longer have to be worried about having loose stools every time I eat. I do monitor what I eat-no spicy foods or soda and very little dairy. I'm taking 10 mg 3 times daily. No side effects as of yet. I am glad it's working so well for me."

Dicyclomine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I have had stomach issues since I was a kid. I was recently prescribed Bentyl up to 4 times a day. It works great, calms my stomach and digestive system down like nothing else I have tried over the counter in the stores has. It can make me a little fuzzy-headed or tired on occasion, but it doesn't happen every time. I will take that small side effect over my stomach problems any day. I highly recommend it."

Dicyclomine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I am going to try this medication. I have had IBS for years now. I just wanted to let you know that one thing that sets it off every time is anything carbonated, pop, water, and so on. Just wanted to let you know."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "Well, I have taken many hard drugs in my day! You name it, I probably did it! I am not bragging, believe me! When you finally grow up, your stories of drug use and parties turn to shame! And then you wonder how you could have ever been that stupid! But I need to add my history of drug use to make my point here. I have used heroin and many other varieties of opiates. And then finally, I used methadone to get off the opiate drugs. Anyway, I was prescribed dicyclomine 20 mg for IBS. And I can honestly say dicyclomine knocks me on my behind! And it feels very similar to opiates (at least for me anyway). Other people and events and circumstances may vary! It has helped very well with my IBS. So please, people! Be careful if you take this drug."

Dicyclomine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I am a male, 66 years old. Suffering from IBS/SIBO for 20 plus years. Check out SIBO on Google. Side effects for this medicine give me extreme headaches. I have started using my old standby, Peppermint Plus, with no LSD effects. I also take peppermint tea with ginger powder."

Dicyclomine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome "Bentyl has made a world of a difference to me. I no longer have quick spasms where I have to run to the bathroom. I can finally live my life without worrying if I will be able to make it to the bathroom or not. Of course, not all of my symptoms are completely gone, but I don't think that is possible with IBS."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "Bentyl is a lifesaver. As soon as I have an IBS spell coming on, I take my Bentyl and within 15 to 20 minutes, I can feel the relief from my symptoms. It's great. I don't like taking pills every day unless needed, and this pill does the trick. I have been using Bentyl for about 7 years now and have had no side effects from it."

Dicyclomine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I was diagnosed with microcolitis after a colonoscopy. Up until the colonoscopy, I had taken loperamide for the daily early morning diarrhea, which worked okay. After the colonoscopy, I developed severe abdominal pain - left lower quadrant (LLQ) pain, especially during aerobic exercise. The GI doc prescribed dicyclomine (generic of Bentyl) 20 mg 3x day - worked wonders for pain! But when I tried going without loperamide, the diarrhea came back. So now I take both and things are relatively under control, although not 'normal.'"

Dicyclomine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I went to the ER one night, was severely constipated, an x-ray showed. Was given Bentyl recommended by doctor, worst day of my life. I have not been the same since. It's been 2 weeks now and it has destroyed my life, my state of mind is off, I cannot shake this mental fogginess. Reading other people's experiences has given me hope that I will be normal again soon. Wish I could go back to that night and never had taken it!"

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I just finished my second stretch taking dicyclomine for IBS. Stopped for a while. First time after a few months I found myself getting up at night only to wake up, and I'm standing in my room sometimes ready to fall. I've fallen twice but caught myself so I didn't hit the ground hard, once my desk stopped me, and the other (in my second stretch on the med) I fell backward into the stand-up fan in my room, which woke me in time to stop myself from hitting the dresser. After stopping the meds both times, the sleep standing/falling stopped. I remember taking a drug for IBS back in the late '80s, and it worked great. This one, not so great!"

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "ER prescribed 20 mg dicyclomine as needed for pain from IBS. I take as needed. It does help with cramping but does not do a thing for diarrhea. It gives me a dry mouth and dehydration, so I have to drink more, and in turn causes increased frequency of diarrhea. I would rather deal with cramping than diarrhea. It's a good drug for cramping but ineffective for diarrhea (at least that is my experience with the drug)."

Dicyclomine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I take 20 mgs of this medication 4 times a day for IBS and gastroparesis because it helps with pyloric spasms that I get with it. My GI doctor also says that I can take it up to 6 times a day on days when the cramping is really bad from the spasms. It works well. I get cramping some, but not nearly like I used to. I haven't had any side effects with it. It's a huge benefit that it helps with both diseases. It also doesn't slow my stomach with the gastroparesis (paralyzed stomach) down as much as most similar medications do, so it was the best choice for me."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "This medicine dicyclomine really doesn’t do much for me. I have IBS and get extreme bloating and gas and bad stomach cramping, dealing with it right now. It’s so uncomfortable I can’t sleep. I take dicyclomine to help with the uncomfortableness and bloating/cramping... and it hasn’t done anything to help. It makes you drowsy, which is great... IF you can fall asleep while you’re extremely uncomfortable."

Dicyclomine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome "This worked like magic on my horrible, knife-like abdominal cramps and bloating. Within 30 minutes, my tummy felt great! But... Bentyl leaves me unable to work and barely functional. When I would take it, it would make me so confused I couldn't remember where I was, why I was there, or what I had just been doing. I would stop talking to someone mid-sentence and not remember what we were talking about or how I got there. I often couldn't answer simple questions. I also became very dizzy. I would only take it again if the IBS symptoms occurred at home and at bedtime. Such a shame. Nothing took away my pain like Bentyl did."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I had severe pain in my upper stomach right side by my ribs, accompanied by constipation. Was told I had fatty liver disease. Ordered to get x-ray, MRI, CT scan, colonoscopy. All was fine. Pain so extreme I couldn't function. After several trips to the ER, one doctor listened and believed me. She prescribed me Bentyl and gave me a shot in my bum. After 15 minutes, no pain!!! I hope this continues, but as of now, it's a lifesaver!!!!"

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I suffered for many years with a spasming gut: rolling waves of pain so severe I would be drenched in sweat, no control of explosive diarrhea. I would be on the verge of passing out and have to lay on the bathroom stall floor in my own diarrhea. Bentyl has saved me. I was on a high dose at first, but slowly tapered off. Now I take it as soon as I feel a bout coming on. I carry it with me, and it has saved me much public embarrassment. It is a blessing."

Dicyclomine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I developed IBS about a year ago as I reflect on my history. I had no idea that was my problem, so I tried easing the problem with various OTC medications, but nothing worked. I finally had to go to the ER, it was so bad. The ER doctor diagnosed me with IBS and prescribed Bentyl. My first dose was administered in the ER, and within 30 minutes, I was pain-free. My prescription dosage is 2 tabs every 6 hours as needed. I sympathize with those of you who are not able to use Bentyl for whatever reason. But don’t give up on trying to find a workable fix! Everyone’s body is different and reacts differently. I am thankful that this worked for me!"
