"I have always had motor tics, but I never had vocal tics until I took Clonidine. The motor tics were getting increasingly worse (to the point where my family feared whiplash with my neck), so we went to the neurologist who prescribed Clonidine. I took it for a few days, missed a dose during an away game (16 at the time), and broke into 20+ tics that I had never previously experienced (minus the neck whipping!). They said it may have been a bad reaction, and that it would only last for "several weeks" but would afterward be fine (because this is a known side-effect). It is now 10+ years later, and while most of the new tics have subsided, I still have more tics than I had before I took the medicine (albeit less severe than the ones I did have previously) and my most prominent tics are now vocal tics."

"My son started with tics at 4 years of age with throat clearing which escalated to multiple motor tics. At age of 7 he started bilateral shoulder shrugs and smacking himself in nose/sinus area for which brought him relier. Also smacking his ears sometimes. Neurologist complied with our request to start meds at that point. He’s now 7 1/2 and his motor tics are very very well controlled on meds. He still clears throat throughout the day and blinks occasionally but he can suppress it during school for the most part. Also helps with his ADHD so he’s much better with 2nd grade homework. Major improvement over 1st grade homework which required more of our time as parents. Currently he takes 1/2 tablet in morning then 1/4 tablet with his lunch (he takes himself) then another 1/4 tablet around 3.30pm then full tablet at 7.30pm. Every time we try more than 1/2 tablet it makes him very drowsy so we back off. No dry mouth and no blood pressure issues."

"I’ve had a flare up of vocal tics for several years now. I had tried about 8 meds with no luck. A neurologist put me on .1mg clonidine (final dose). I struggled to stay awake all day and my system dried out. I didn’t notice any benefit. Also, I have ADD-Inattentive. The drug didn’t help for that either. I already have low BP, so that might have added to the fatigue. Am getting to the point where I might try the older anti-psych drugs that carry the risk of permanent movement disorder. Don’t understand why some drugs work for some & not others."

"When I was first given clonidine for my tics, it was frustrating. I'd take a pill (0.1mg), it would take effect after an hour, last an hour, and then I couldn't take another dose for another two hours. Then someone suggested using the transdermal patch. You get a slow dose over 24 hours and it really helped reduce my tics and made life more bearable. I would really encourage anyone to use the patch rather than a pill (and you can cut the patch to get a lower dose, etc)"

"This helped me cope and treat my Tourette's throughout my childhood. I do rate it a 9 due to it causing drowsiness, and now I am 17 and can't sleep without it."
