Benzonatate "I had asthma as a child and can tell you getting sick in the winter always leads to bronchitis, horrible coughing fits, so much to dry heaving being unbearable. I'm 30, so now experienced in having that winter cold. No longer do I need antibiotics as the respiratory infections become less and less. I've found running, jogging, or swimming, staying in cardiovascular health is the best way to avoid this disaster, but these Tessalon Perles, that first time I've had them this year, work miracles for me. They almost instantly subdue the coughs, two pills at a time. I experience no side effects other than drowsiness, and they are perfect for night when your body is slowing down, the cough is coming back, and it's impossible to sleep when you need that rest."

Benzonatate "After being unable to sleep for more than 15 minutes at a time for three nights in a row, even with my head elevated on several pillows, the doctor gave me this. My nonstop dry cough stopped for up to 5 hours, and then it came back, but less severe. It doesn't last 8 hours, but it allowed me to get some much-needed sleep. Sucking sugar-free cherry Luden's cough drop and/or swallowing a teaspoon of honey without water help also. Also take Mucinex to thin secretions."

"Diagnosed with a chest infection after surviving influenza B. Literally coughing for hours and days - nighttime was awful. To the point I wondered if a cough could finish me off. Was on antibiotics and prednisone for 3 days with no relief and a swollen throat and mouth. I called the doctor after peeing my pants at a work meeting in front of 30 people. Was so annoyed this is what they sent to the pharmacy (expensive! And I wanted the real deal). HOWEVER, I feel like they are saving my life right now! I managed to sleep for 5 hours straight before waking up to a 2-hour coughing fit. I read it’s important you space them out. You can only take 3 200 mg/day. They definitely improved my quality of life for the time being and are giving me hope! If I can rest between cough fits, I feel like I’ll survive. I’m happy to not be pissing myself anymore!!"

Benzonatate "I can feel the medicine start to work after about a half an hour. I'm going on my 3rd week with a bronchitis cough, and it's the worst. It gets so bad that I can't breathe, and my head hurts. I've never had coughing fits like this in my life, so I didn't know if these pearls would work. They make me a little dizzy and tired, but I can tell they work. The relief is amazing. They last about 8 hrs. I wouldn't say they take the cough away completely, but there's definitely an improvement."

Benzonatate "Tessalon Perles worked very well for me. Stopped the hacking cough of COVID dead in its tracks. The only side effect I've had is a slight increase in sleepiness, which, given the situation, isn't a bad thing. It makes it easy to rest while recovering."

Benzonatate "Diagnosed with bronchitis and sinusitis, I had been unable to sleep as I was coughing terribly all night long. My doctor prescribed me Tessalon Perles, and the coughing stopped immediately! I felt relaxed and wonderful and was able to lay down and sleep. However, 5 hours after taking 2 pills, the effects wore off, and I was thrust awake, coughing something fierce again. Just wish the meds would last longer!"

Benzonatate "Was prescribed for cough from bronchitis. At first, I was reluctant to take it as it said it caused drowsiness, as I am hypersensitive to meds. I finally got desperate enough to take one and was actually able to sleep in my bed after 4 nights in a recliner. It has now been 6 weeks, and I still have coughing fits if I don't take the Tessalon. I am hoping this will eventually go away. The only thing you might consider a side effect that I have had is that I have these crazy dreams. Not nightmares, but just craziness. Thank goodness for my doc! :)"

"Absolutely worthless. I went to a clinic on Thanksgiving Day and was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection. The doctor prescribed this, and my cough has gotten SIGNIFICANTLY worse. I'm completely irritated. I can't sleep, and I'm about to go to the drug store and just buy some damned cough syrup. I'm not surprised at all to see all the one-star reviews. Wish I could give it ZERO."

Benzonatate "I found Tessalon very effective. Much ahead of OTC syrups. My cough is a racking type with extreme pressure on the sternum. Tessalon works very well. In my opinion, its ability to relieve the cough by controlling the 'nerve center' is why it is so effective."

"Physicians are prescribing benzonatate in the hope (against evidence) that it will work. Because they are getting squeezed by regulators concerning hydrocodone or codeine mix medications. Benzonatate is ineffective against persistent cough. It flat out does not work the way that medicines with opiate additives work. So as long as there are unscrupulous doctors who have literally thrown these narcotic-based meds at patients for profit or whatever motivation, honest, well-intended people will suffer with medications that are inferior at doing the job. This is my second week of taking Tessalon Perle, and I can honestly say that it is a waste of your money. You might as well have a honey and brandy drink (providing you don't have an issue with alcohol). I can also recommend hot, steamy showers, a cool room, and lots of inactivity. Get some sugar-free candies that you can leave in your mouth, and good luck."

Benzonatate "Have been prescribed Tessalon Perles several times for bronchitis, and they've never once worked for me. I might as well eat a sugar cube. Sadly, cough drops do a better job of suppressing my cough than Tessalon Perles, and that's nothing to brag about. The previous poster who wants the syrup is right, that stuff is the only thing that really works."

Benzonatate "I've had bronchitis for two weeks, and the Tessalon Perles have not worked for me. What has worked, to sleep at night, is taking 2 Benadryl Liquigels at bedtime. During the day, I drink a lot of water, suck on Ricola extra strength cough drops, and I have an albuterol inhaler."

"I took benzonatate about a year ago. I get really bad allergies, which triggers my asthma, which leads to me having a terrible cough. My doctor prescribed me benzonatate, and it worked very well for me. I felt like I couldn't breathe, and once I took the pill about 30 minutes to an hour later, I felt like a new person. Currently, it is allergy season for me, so unfortunately, I am in the same position once again. I took benzonatate earlier today, and thankfully, it worked for me once again."

Benzonatate "About 14 years ago, I had the flu/bronchitis and was prescribed Tessalon Perles along with the Z-Pak. It worked great. I had coughed so badly it felt like I was going into pulmonary distress. It immediately helped, but now in the last 2 years, I have this nagging cough. It seems to come with a real bad sinus infection. Both years I have been prescribed Tessalon, and it doesn't even help. The cough keeps returning. Last week I have taken 3 Perles a day at 100mg each. I am still coughing. I have asked for the syrup and was told no, or the doctors would look at me like I was a junkie trying to get over. I don't understand the doctors, if this stuff isn't working, why are they writing the scripts? I want some of that syrup, lol. That is the only thing that helps."

Benzonatate "I take care of a 94-year-old, and she came down with a horrible cold with a cough. Her doctor prescribed Tessalon Perles, and within a matter of days, she started hallucinating and started going into crazy dreams. She got so confused that she had no clue who anyone was or that her house was even hers. At the same time, she was also prescribed a steroid to help her lungs. Her family would not let me take her off the Tessalon Perles. They kept saying it was the steroid. It clearly states in the list of side effects that hallucinating is something that can happen. Read the side effects of this medication before taking it, people. Especially when you're giving it to the elderly!"

Benzonatate "I first was prescribed this in 1988. I was keeping the whole house awake from coughing due to bronchitis. My mom, an RN, said, 'that's it! You're going to the doctor and getting Tessalon Perles.' There's no words to describe the relief that it gave me, not to mention the rest of my family. I was 18 at the time. 30 years later, it still works as well for me as it did when in 1988. I feel, for me, this pill is 'magic.' It's very unfortunate that some people don't have any relief with this. I guess it's a hit or miss thing. Well, I'm scoring home runs still after all these years."

"This stuff is absolutely worthless. I’m shocked there are people who had it work for them, but the four times I’ve been prescribed this for coughs, it has helped my cough as well as eating a pebble. I’m still coughing so hard that I’m throwing up, and this crap does nothing to calm down my lungs or whatever crap it’s supposed to do. Luckily, you can take it with NyQuil, so I was able to get some sleep, but I’m so over doctors prescribing this crap. My doctor this time got me by calling it by Tussinex. Damn, she got me good."

"I understand how some people say it doesn't work, because for me it took a few days. I, at times, throughout my life, get sick with a cough that makes me nearly insane! Stick with it! By the second day, I was experiencing very little coughing. It just seemed to kick in, and it's saved my sanity."

"I am extremely disappointed that it did not help with my cough. Unfortunately, I am allergic to codeine, and my doctor prescribed benzonatate as a good alternative. I was hoping to finally get some sleep at night, but it has not happened."

Benzonatate "I use these particular for a dry cough I get. They work best when I just have a nagging cough that is nonproductive and my coughing creates irritation that produces more coughing. They stop the cycle. If I have a bad cough from a cold with full lungs, my doctor gives me something different."
