For Thromboembolic Stroke Prophylaxis "My 83 yo father was in danger of losing his life. Has Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), stomach problems and prostate cancer in past. He had developed a Blood clot behind ICD. He deteriorated within 3 days of taking this drug, couldn't walk and bleeding out through back passage, kidneys and we don't know where else as still waiting for test results. His lactate levels 7.3 on admittance to hospital; a sustained 5 has a survival rate of only 11% so dad lucky thus far. He has received 4 units of blood, oxygen, saline solution to try to flush it out. This medication must be administered with caution, looking at previous conditions and closely monitored. My dad deteriorated within 72 of starting it. The external symptoms are: listlessness, waxy skin, breathing difficulties, paralysis of lower limbs."

For Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "I recently started Eliquis (brand) as my doctor wants to do a cardioversion in hopes of getting my heart back into a normal rhythm. You need to be on a blood thinner prior to, and after, this procedure. Because of my past experiences with side effects, I quartered a few of the 5mg tablets and took one quarter (1.25mg) on each of the first two days. On the third day, I took two 1.25mg doses of Eliquis, twelve hrs apart, for a daily total of 2.5mg. Within 30 min after taking the second 1.25 dose, I began to feel a continuous internal tremor that lasted for 5 hrs.-no pain, no external tremor, no feeling ill. I am afraid to increase the dosage to reach the prescribed 5mg x 2/daily. HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS SIDE EFFECT??"

For Deep Vein Thrombosis "This drug is dangerous. After a DVT, I was placed on the drug 5mg twice a day. After a week, my colon started to feel funny. A couple of days later, I developed significant rectal bleeding. I went to the ER where they diagnosed it was due to the Eliquis. I stopped the drug and the bleeding stopped within two days. I am now on 10mg Xarelto once a day. No bleeding after seven days. I have a friend who is now in intensive care with a brain bleed. He was also on Eliquis for atrial fibrillation. He had been on the drug for four months. His symptoms started with minor headaches. The FDA has it listed as a Black Box, which means it could be fatal. None of this was told to me at the ER for my DVT."

For Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "Possibly due to my flu/pneumonia, I had an episode of ventricular tachycardia followed by atrial fibrillation. I had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) put in. I was put on beta blockers and antibiotics in the hospital and monitored for several days before going home with a prescription for Eliquis in addition to the other medications. The need for a blood thinner was debated because of very low risk factors. After the fourth dose of Eliquis on the second day of being released, I developed an itchy red rash over much of my face, neck, torso, arms, thighs, and genital area. The doctor advised me to stop taking Eliquis."

For Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "I was having dizziness shortly after taking the pill. I kept taking it for almost a month when I had a fainting spell and decided I had to stop it. My doctor agreed that I should. I am an 80-year-old woman just recently diagnosed with AF. I am back on 81mg aspirin. I am not diabetic or have any other maladies. I'm glad for those who it works for, I'm just not one of them."

For Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "I am 84. After two atrial fibrillation incidents that were two years apart, my doctor prescribed Eliquis, one 5mg pill once a day. After ingesting the first pill at 8:00 am, by 11:00 am I was dizzy and just felt lousy. I emailed my doctor, suggesting that I take only half a pill a day. She agreed. After two weeks of feeling lousy, I awoke one morning with my right eye severely reddened and the right side of my head throbbing. It was a weekend, so I went to Urgent Care, they did an echocardiogram, which showed I was pretty okay. Before I went home, I told the doctor that I would never again take Eliquis. She didn't like that. But I went back on my old metformin/aspirin regime and after six months I am okay."

For Deep Vein Thrombosis, Prophylaxis "I had a heart valve replacement in January '01. Although the Eliquis TV commercials explicitly state NOT to be used by artificial heart value recipients, my cardiologist prescribed it at 5 mg twice daily. The first month was ok, then I was getting dizzy spells and loss of balance when standing and walking. I reviewed the side effects online and found that Eliquis can cause vertigo. My daily life is miserable. I told my doctor but he refuses to change the script or to cut back on the dosage. I guess it is effective against my Afib as I have no known sessions, but.....my quality of life is nil..."

For Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "I've been taking Eliquis for nearly 2 months and since taking it have suffered from an almost permanent headache and the feeling similar to being kicked in the belly. Previously I was on Warfarin for over 5 years without problem. The two symptoms I mentioned came on within 2-3 days of taking Eliquis."

For Pulmonary Embolism "I have had 3 PEs over the last few years, the first 2 after an outpatient surgery and general anesthesia, then a 3rd small one after stopping Eliquis. I have been taking Eliquis and over time I have been experiencing increasingly terrible side effects, including chest tightness, shortness of breath, GERD, muscle weakness, joint pain, weight gain while eating less, and headaches. I am planning to go to aspirin. Has anyone gone from Eliquis to aspirin successfully? Don't want another PE but can't live with these side effects."

For Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "My husband has been on Eliquis 5mg twice a day for several months after being on Plavix after a coronary stent in Dec 2019. The cardiologist insisted since he has had atrial fib whenever he has a health crisis. So, on the Plavix, he had some nasty bruising whenever he had blood drawn. Now on the Eliquis, he has swelling in his hands and arms. Worse is the swelling of face around the mouth and lips. He also loses his voice from pharyngeal swelling. His breathing is fine. It usually settles down after a few hours, but last time it took longer. We cut the Eliquis in half and reduced the dose, but he has had the same reaction again. It happens after taking it in the evening and swelling comes up overnight. Changing back to aspirin to see if the Eliquis is the problem. He is also on Toprol or Metoprolol, which he has also cut back on to 50mg once a day. His BP and pulse are fine. He is 74 years old and almost completely incapacitated by these drugs. Not sleeping and loss of appetite also."

For Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "Mother had good health for a 94-year-old, able to care for herself, socialize, and enjoy life with zest. She was put on this drug because of irregular heart rhythm. She went down in the bathroom, was taken to the ED, CT scanned with a brain bleed. Came home, perked up to her old self, but 10 days later, lost speech and self-care - a new CT scan reveals more bleeding, now she's on hospice. Crazy. We believe the drug has all to do with this because of her health status and NO chronic conditions, none. This lady could stay up all day, drove her own car until 6 weeks ago, ate 3 meals a day, went to church every Sunday. Carried a just-in-case cane, for balance."

Six months later I had a brain stem stroke all while I was on Eliquis! It’s been throws around that my diagnosis is Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome but I have yet to test twice for this in a lab test! I test once but not again! I have however tested positive several times but just once each time! Never the second blood test! My ANA is very high! I am not sure is my experience with my near death experience from my brain stem stroke was due to Eliquis or to miss diagnosed!"

For Deep Vein Thrombosis "I was prescribed Eliquis after experiencing an upper extremity deep vein thrombosis due to thoracic outlet syndrome. The clot was dissolved in the hospital through thrombolysis. I was sent home with Eliquis 10 mg x2 per day for a week, then 5 mg x2 per day for maintenance. I didn't realize how horrible this drug made me feel until I called my hematologist after 3 months and begged him to reduce the dose. I experienced extreme fatigue, depression/apathy, muscle pain all over my body, and joint pain that would keep me up at night in my hips and lower back. My whole body began to hurt all the time after about 5 weeks on the medication. I couldn't do any exercise without being unable to get out of a chair for days afterwards. Not to mention the horrible heartburn. Fortunately, I see a TOS expert soon, and fingers crossed will be able to drop the Eliquis entirely. Has been an awful experience."

For Deep Vein Thrombosis "Update from a previous comment. Switched from Xarelto to Eliquis about 12 months ago. Horrific side effects as with Xarelto. I had days where I can't remember simple basic things, difficulty remembering family members' names. Am dizzy, nauseous, osteoarthritis, joint pain, ears ringing, complete loss of vision. Penile bleeding. Strange pimples. Horrific lack of energy. Chest pains and fluttering heart, feels like a heart attack. WEIGHT GAIN... I went from 150-165 average to becoming 210. But adding weight plus the inability to exercise and strengthen the body.. any mishap fall or jump or avoidance of sudden movement and you can be SEVERELY INJURED. As I lay here with a back injury also related to NEUROPATHY from Eliquis."

For Deep Vein Thrombosis "I had a blood clot in abdominal superior mesenteric artery. I was prescribed Eliquis following open surgery to bypass thrombosed SMA artery in the abdomen. Side effects for me are predominantly GI related: severe abdominal/intestinal cramping/pain within 20-40 min after taking it & which lasts a couple hours. It has been confirmed I am now getting adequate blood to my GI system since surgery, so that is not the problem. Bloating and gas are also a problem since taking Eliquis for 2 1/2 months. Hoping my cardiologist will agree to switch me to a different option, even if it means INR blood tests. I had lots of GI issues prior to surgery that affected my quality of life. Albeit the GI issues I now have are different than pre-bypass, Eliquis is a key factor in my continued reduced quality of life."

For Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "After a routine internist visit and then an EKG, I was diagnosed with Afib but with a low pulse; therefore, I have no major symptoms of Afib — maybe a sometimes pounding heart. I saw two cardiologists and was placed on Eliquis. Since then, I have had major joint pain, difficulty climbing steps, dizziness, fatigue, and itching. All in all, the joint pain was unreal, and I took myself off the 2.5 mg twice a day that I was taking (even though my prescription was 5 mg twice a day). Eliquis has lactose in it, and I am lactose intolerant, so I immediately noticed a problem, and that is why I cut my pills in half to take a 2.5 mg dose. That did solve the lactose problem, but the joint issues were not resolved until I got off the medication. I was on it for about 2 months, so I am unsure how expensive it was ultimately going to be because I was given a free month and then a reduced-rate month. I am 72 years old."

For Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "Mom (88) was on this for 4 months. Had to take her to the hospital as she was exhausted and felt very ill. Found that the Eliquis gave her bleeding ulcers, and she had to be given blood transfusions because of severe blood loss, as well as drugs to help heal the ulcers. She always ate a healthy diet. Never had stomach issues before. After she went off this, her stomach healed up and she had no further problems with it. Stomach ulcers are not listed in the warnings for Eliquis."

For Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "At age 79 and put on Eliquis 5 days ago—I have had such bad dizziness and nausea—and because of Meniere's also, the ears ringing has been awful and added to all this. I have chronic a-fib and have had two cardioversions. I was previously on 2 baby aspirin daily. Couldn't tolerate either of the other newer meds either. Everything seems to increase my dizziness due to Meniere's and adds to nausea and even confusion, etc. So, I just told my doctor, no more of this drug. I want to stay with the 2 baby aspirin daily. No history of stroke in my family, nor have I had any. I just don't do meds well 'at all'."

For Pulmonary Embolism "I have been taking Eliquis for almost three years. I am 79 years old. I had a blood clot on my right leg and both lungs in 2020 and was put on Eliquis. I have experienced a lot of side effects. Some of them include fatigue, leg cramps, bleeding, hair thinning, itching, blurry eyesight, black tarry stools, and nose bleeds. For the bleeding, I had a complete hysterectomy and colonoscopy, but I still experienced symptoms. My doctor would not reduce my dose or stop the medication. However, I took half my dose for 1.5 weeks and then stopped a week ago. I am feeling so much better!"

"Ever since I started taking this medication I have been in more pain and I never know from one day to the next what I'm going to feel like. What really scared me this morning it was hard to breathe. I get rashes, headaches, nausea and anxiety. I'm so fatigued all the time and have more pain. I feel better when I first wake up before I start taking medication. I take 5 mg twice a day I thought about just stopping and not take anymore as I feel like it's going to be the end of me anyway! I've never been the same since I had my stroke!"

For Prevention of Thromboembolism in Atrial Fibrillation "Recently had a TIA due to A Fib and was put on Eliquis. No issues for 3 weeks until my heart rate spiked to 180 BPM, tachydardia, and feeling a flush of adrenaline throughout my body. Within 4 days I had 3 episodes of it and was finally put on metoprolol to control my heart rate. It's now been 2 months and I still continue to have episodes of tachycardia with the flushing of adrenaline feeling. I'm also feeling dizzy quite often and in a fog a lot of the time. I feel like I'm a few heartbeats away from a heart attack. Doctors don't seem too worried but they're not going through it. I've never had instances of tachycardia until taking eliquis and lipitor. Not happy and will be asking for alternatives."
