"Is amitriptyline finally the one? I'm on day 6. Have only had one minor day of feeling like a robot. Starting to notice some change in mood, but nothing significant yet. Drowsy all day, but hear this wears off after time. I'm on only 10 mgs before bed. I just want to have a normal life of being happy and wanting to do fun things in life. I am also on clonazepam, which I'm sure doesn't help with the grogginess. I have taken citalopram and Wellbutrin before. Both gave me extreme panic attacks and bad thoughts of harming myself and others. Was afraid that would happen with this med. But so far, so good. Excited to see how the next few weeks go and hope this will be a life changer."

"I come to share my experience of amitriptyline to treat anxiety and depression. I've spent 3 years of my life under this medication. It was 3 painful years during which I was constantly tired because of the amitriptyline. Last year, I started withdrawal, and I've spent 1 year and a half reducing the drug, but as I was getting closer to the end, some abdominal aches appeared, and now even if it's been months since I've stopped the medication, I still have those pains (which are not diagnosed, but I think it's the irritable bowel syndrome). I've poor sleep because of the pain, and I despair to stop them. The only thing that used to stop them was taking amitriptyline again."

"Diagnosed with general anxiety disorder in March 2020. As is typical, I was on Lexapro for 7 weeks, which made me feel worse. Switched to Effexor for 4 days and stopped, as the side effects were unbearable, so I totally came off antidepressants. I continue to be miserable and nauseous all the time. Finally, I see a gastroenterologist who diagnosed me with a functional GI disorder due to anxiety and prescribed Amitriptyline 10 mg, and the nausea is gone, but my depression is still continuing as I have been dealing with this for months, and although not nauseous, all other symptoms exist. I slowly increase by 5 mg each week. The depression was awful, but I persisted with the plan, and by 30 mg, the cloud began to finally lift. I’m at 35 mg now, and I actually feel normal when I never thought I would ever feel normal again just a couple weeks earlier. Thank God for my gastroenterologist because my psych wouldn’t have even tried Amitriptyline. Thank God for this drug. It saved me."

"When I was 15, I was diagnosed with depression, but being so young, I refused to take medicine. This year has been the toughest year for me, and I found myself in a really bad state of mind. My doctor prescribed me 10 mg of amitriptyline for my headaches and said it’ll help with depression too. I never felt the way I felt after taking this. The past 8 years, I don’t think I ever went a day without telling myself, “I’m so depressed.” I’ve only been on this medicine since May, but it has made me feel better. Up until recently, I started to feel down again for no reason. Maybe I need to up the dosage. Either way, I’m so lucky to have started this medicine and have gotten no side effects. I truly felt like I was about to live a normal life for the past two months :)"

"I'm 18 and was diagnosed with major depressive disorder and anxiety two years ago. I never thought I'd try medication for my depression, but I had gone to a doctor about my migraines and eye aches. They prescribed me amitriptyline 10 mg, which happened to also be an antidepressant. I could easily pick it up from the pharmacy for $10 for 90 pills. I've been on it for more than a month and have noticed my feeling of sadness is much better, as well as a decrease in my impulsive thoughts. Plus, my headaches are basically gone (except when I went off my meds for 5 days, LOL). Don't feel like I'm gaining weight from this, by the way, but I do have an increased appetite, as I'd never feel happy enough to eat. :) I would definitely recommend it!"

"I used Tryptanol 20 years ago and found that this med worked for me. After trying so many other antidepressant medications, I have found that I am always having to increase them, then they work for a while, and then I have to increase the meds again. I recently went on Endep, and I could notice a difference in a few days. I chose to go back on these meds. It wasn't the Dr's suggestion. I'm so glad I went back on these :) The only side effect I have noticed is a dry mouth."

"I switched to this from clomipramine because I was having terrible side effects, unfortunately, the amitriptyline is worse. My doctor tried taking me up to 150 mg in hopes that it would break my depression, instead, I've developed the worst acid reflux I could have imagined. At one point, my entire throat was spasming all day. I can't get the rest I desperately need, and it's making eating difficult, and I'm already underweight. I've tried medications to get rid of it, but nothing is working, just making my stomach feel worse. I just pray that the reflux stops when I get off of it, as it's driving me completely insane! I'm down to 50 mg and go to 25 mg tomorrow. I can't wait to get off this drug. It's literally not helped me at all, just made things worse than ever."

"Drug worked like a miracle on anxiety and depression - but it made my ears ring and caused hearing loss. Now more depressed than ever. 75 mg for 6 days, and ear went numb. Nightmare scenario, and I'm living it."

"Good information. My daughter was started on Amitriptyline 25 mg for depression treatment. On day 5, we tried increasing the dose to 50 mg, which immediately induced a train of unwanted thoughts with compulsive reactions-obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We dropped the dose to 25 mg, but OCD persisted. We withdrew Amitriptyline on day 10 and started Prozac 10 mg. OCD with unwanted thoughts improved immediately and stopped 3 days later. Concluding, Amitriptyline improved depression but induced OCD."

"Since 2005, I suffered a long battle with Raynaud’s disease and severe depression. I have been hospitalized many times for both ailments. This medication took all my pain away and gave me clear thinking. I was taking Cymbalta, which is horrible to wean off from and seemed to make me more agitated. Amitriptyline has made me feel normal again. Right now, I’m taking 25 mg at night, but I may have to increase it to 50 mg. I don’t know why or how it works, but it does."

"Experience is the best teacher, my journey with amitriptyline started last year. I was sick for a very long time with no single day of relief, antibiotics and antimalarials with no result. From the area I come from, people will term this unresolved issue spiritual. I went from church to churches, still no result until I went for a proper medical check-up when all test results came out negative. I was prescribed amitriptyline in December 2016, and this drug happened to be a lifesaver. I increased the dose from 25 mg to as high as 125 mg, at this point, I felt very good with myself, my life was blissful. After some time, my doc started to help me taper off it. I gradually tapered off the same way I increased using it. All was fine all the way I stopped using Endep the last week of last month. Right now, I'm in the depression stage. I am using 50 mg, but still no improvement. I sleep but wake up at intervals. Will increasing it help? This drug has really worked for me."

"Been suffering from depression and anxiety for over 10 years. This medication did nothing to alleviate my symptoms. I've been taking it for almost 3 weeks now, yet I'm exhausted, lethargic, I feel spaced out most of the time. I force myself to do things that I absolutely must do, but I don't do a good job because I really don't want to do them. I'm going back to my Dr's office to see if my dose could be increased or I could go on a different antidepressant. I've tried SSRIs in the past, and while they had their own problems, they seemed to work instantly for my mood. Giving it 3/10 because it does help me sleep at night, and it didn't have any side effects unlike the SSRIs I was on before."

"My depression/anxiety lasted almost a whole year, and I truly thought I was never going to feel better. Initially, my psychiatrist tried increasing Cymbalta (my medicine at the time), which only made me more anxious. I tried several different antidepressants, including Prozac, Wellbutrin, Clonidine, and Buspar before being put on Amitriptyline. Make sure you stay on Amitriptyline for 6 weeks before trying something else because that is how long it took for me to feel myself again. I am also on secondary antidepressants Seroquel and Trintellix. Initially, I was put on 100 mg of Amitriptyline, but I found that dosage actually increased my depression. My psychiatrist finally agreed to lower the dosage to 75 mg, which worked perfectly. It also helped my insomnia. I never thought I was going to get better and felt so hopeless. I was even ready to try ECT, but now I don’t need to. The only negative side effects are constipation and dry mouth."

"Amitriptyline 150 MG once daily every night when he goes to bed is a lifesaver and helps him with his daily chronic depression disorder and daily chronic anxiety disorder. He takes it with his anxiety medication Buspirone 10 MG three times in the morning, afternoon, and night, and he gets the complete total daily protection with both medications every day. They really help a lot and say goodbye to his daily depression and daily anxiety, and if it weren't for Amitriptyline and Buspirone, it would be really difficult to get through his days, especially with this crazy COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic crisis this world has been going through 24/7 for nearly 2 years already. I think COVID-19 is going to be the daily normal thing that everyone is going to have to face day to day for the rest of their life every day and pray that this COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic crisis would go away for life and forever!!!"

"I suffered from headaches for 40 years until I started to get depression after some horrible life events. It did help with the headaches and does help with the depression, but I do have bad days which may last for 3-4 days. I take 125 mg, which I am told is a lot. I do get side effects. I have been on it for 12 years. I am going to ask if there is a better alternative."

"I’ve been on 30 mg amitriptyline for 6 months. It works well with treating my depression and helps me sleep, but I’ve put weight on and feel confused often. I’m reducing it and thinking of replacing it with healthy eating and exercise."

"I'm really sad about probably having to stop this med as it has been absolutely brilliant for my depression and anxiety. Me = 47-year-old male, long-term depression/anxiety sufferer. I would always find that the common SSRI meds I tried in the past would ease my depression and anxiety, but not actually get rid of it fully enough so that I felt 'normal'. Then I tried amitriptyline (75 mg a day) and for the first time in about 10 years, ALL depression and anxiety, gone! Unfortunately, I'm getting a side effect: 'tachycardia', which means this med is making my heart beat too fast. I was just sunbathing in the garden, totally relaxed, and even then my heart was beating way over 100 bpm. Note: a very common side effect which I get from amitriptyline is dry mouth. This didn't actually bother me though, as it lessened as the weeks went on, plus I would just drink some water."

"I've had severe anxiety my whole life, paired with depression and bipolar disorder. Ever since I was a child, I've had chronic migraines and headaches, especially at ages when I just shouldn't be having them. My doctor prescribed me this to calm me down and help stabilize my brain activity, to halt the anxiety and depression he thought was causing my headaches and migraines. The pill worked fine after the first few doses, but I guess my body developed a tolerance. Now, when I don't take it, I'm extremely nervous and my depressive tendencies skyrocket. My headaches and migraines never went away. I feel that this pill had a negative effect on me rather than actually helping, and I will be consulting my doctor for something else."

Amitriptyline "I dropped 50 mg of Endep cold turkey over 3 years ago. I ended up with 24/7 migraines for a month, collapsed, and was taken to the hospital, and unfortunately, the doctor started me back on Endep. He said they were good for headaches. Left the hospital on a small dose and started having panic attacks all day, every day, collapsed, and was put back in the hospital. They increased my dose of Endep. I am now trying to get off it again as it is not working, I am decreasing the Endep by 5 mg a week."

"I have taken it that long. I feel sure that I am getting adverse effects. I take a small dose in the morning, and it calms me down, but for the past year, when the sedative side of the pill wears off, I get terrible feelings of fear, and the anxiety kicks in. Does anyone else have this scary feeling? It is a feeling of doom and gloom, it is a very frightening thing."

"I took this for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). I changed over from mirtazapine as I didn’t want weight gain. I’d rate it 8/10 for what it did for my mood, it lifted me out of hell within a week. Took between 10-30 mg. However, it had too many awful side effects, so I stopped after 5 weeks. I experienced a faster heart rate and getting out of breath, chest pain, insomnia (I either could not sleep at all, woke every hour, or would sometimes wake with my brain feeling like it was fizzing), significant impact on my libido, which also caused my vagina to go dry (resulting in painful sex and sores), some occasional emotional blunting, and dry mouth. I also constantly bit my nails as it was so stimulating for me. Horrible withdrawal is still ongoing 5 days after stopping, I still have insomnia (even though I’ve started mirtazapine), and I have body aches and a headache. I’ve never had withdrawals from any medication in my life."

"Spent 4 years on it, it was prescribed first as a sleeping pill at 10 mg, and it should have stayed like that. But instead, my psychiatrist refused to put me back on Paroxetine, and we increased the dose to 150 mg (over multiple months). I gained a lot of weight, was extremely tired, driving was dangerous, and heart rate was really high. Even if it relieved my anxiety, the drug was not efficient enough and had too many side effects. It was not the drug for me."

"I have suffered from depression and anxiety for almost 27 years. Amitriptyline was another medication that didn't help at all. After five months, I decided to quit taking it. The dose was 200 mg at the end of that period, so it was maximum."

Amitriptyline "My father has been on Endep (low dose) for a few months and has slept 20 hours a day, however, he is pain-free for the first time in a long time. I don't know if the trade-off is worth it, but his pain was unbearable, but now he has no life. Just sleep."
