"My left femur broke spontaneously after taking Fosamax for 10 years. It was rodded. Three months later, I had pain in my right femur. An X-ray showed a stress fracture. I had prophylactic rodding as indicated. I hadn't had either osteoporosis or osteopenia. It was given to me by a male doctor who automatically prescribed it to 'women of a certain age.' At the time I started this drug, there were no warnings about ill effects. Only after my taking it for 10 years did the warnings appear. They stated that Fosamax is effective for 3-5 years. Too late for me. Bisphosphonates are now deemed to stay in one's system for years. I preach against the careless prescription of bisphosphonates and have alerted many women - whose femurs are still intact. Be wary of all bisphosphonates."
