Cancer Cachexia

Medically reviewed by Drugs.com. Last updated on Jun 5, 2024.

Cancer cachexia is a condition that causes severe weight loss, muscle wasting (loss), and inflammation. It can develop during any stage of cancer, but it is most common during late stages. Cachexia can be caused by your body's reaction to cancer or to cancer treatment. Management of cachexia may change over time, depending on how your body responds to treatment. Management may also change if you move through the 3 stages (precachexia, cachexia, and refractory cachexia). Management of cachexia can help you feel better and enjoy your daily activities more easily.
