With my first period on Xarelto, I was hospitalized for 9 days and given 3 units of blood for a transfusion. I was told a heavy cycle was normal, but nothing like I experienced. If you start feeling weak and lethargic contact your dr. I was to the point to were I couldn't function and finally went to the ER after 13 days of a very heavy cycle.
The exact same thing happened to me! I had my period for 3 1/2 weeks... I was rushed to the emergency room because my hemoglobin levels were in the low 5's. I also needed 3 units of blood and I was told that xeralto is just to strong for me. They took me off of it and put me on Coumadin . They stopped my bleeding with a depro Vera shot. Now months later... I have gotten my period again on the Coumadin ... I'm curious to see what happens.
I realize that this is a couple years old but I wish people could be more specific about what "their's was like" just for the sake of future reference for people like me, searching for help on this same subject. It's just a suggestion to others in the future. Thank you
Oh damn that sounds rough I've been on anticoagulants for over 2 years now. I was on.warfrin but due to reclotting got put on rivoroxoban (xylotol). I have had the implant in since before my bilateral PE 2 years ago so have had no periods but yesterday came on for the first time whilst on meds. I am alredy anemic and flow is defo heavyer than im use to =( I just hope it don't last as long as others have said.
Someone was looking for more current info. My periods have been horrible since starting Xarelto. Now, when it starts & gets to the clump huge clot stage I stop taking Xarelto until it is done. Discuss this with your doctor first. I have a-fib & can't be on any hormones in any form. No IUD, birth control, etc.my period will last for up to 3 weeks. I may not have a period for 3 months or more. Once my period lasted for 2 months & I had to have a DNC said I had a cyst that was making me bleed for that long. Also have endometriosis. I have a excellent doctor, I saw the NP in the group & realized she was totally wrong. Wanted to put me on hormones which I knew I was not suppose to take. Ask to see my Obgyn who is an O.D. I highly recommend someone who is an O.D. They have more experience than just an Obgyn.
Wow I am sorry to hear all the trouble everyone is having. I have a history of DVT's first one was caused by my birth control. I now can have zero hormones ever. I also have an ovary removed due to a cyst. My dr. tried to put me Xarelto and I refused just because it was such a new medication. I am allergic to coumadin and don't take it. Instead I take the once a day injections and honestly they just are not that bad. They don't have side effects like the Pills and the half life is very short if for some reason you needed to clot. my periods seem un affected so y'all might consider looking into them. I was on lovenox for a month (not good for long term use, bone thinning) and now am on arixtra once a day and it is no problem. also work just as well for a thinner.
How was your heavy bleeding treated? I got a DVT April 5th, went off B/C and on xarelto. I was on my period for 14 days and my hemoglobin dropped to 65. I got an IUD inserted and it fell out with my next period that was 17 days long. I went on a synarel nasal spray and now 2 weeks later I'm getting my next period, but I'm still trying to raise my hemoglobin. My gynaecologist said the synarel spray will likely not work by the time of my next period (now) and had prescribed provera to stop the bleeding. When trying to fill the prescription, the pharmacist said it's a dangerous option for my history of thrombosis.
My question is: how was your heavy periods treated? I feel like my situation is not that unique for women on blood thinners, but no one knows what to do for me.
Please help
My doctor reduced my dosage in half during my period. This helped some. I'm not longer on the meds, but for those 6 months, it was truly aggravating!! Good luck
I am taking zareltto for the past two months now and this is my second period, am scared am going to bleed to death heavy heavy period heavy blood clot, I may go to emergency to night am scared, I change 40 pad in 3 days
I have been on Xarelto for over 5 years. I never had a heavy period until I started taking coumadin 2 years before the Xarelto.
My doctor performed an ablation. About 80%. I had very light periods after that and then they stopped for 6 months. It came back with a vengeance so my next option is removal (hysterectomy).
I can't take hormones due to my clotting problem.
The ablation worked great for a number of years and was a simple procedure.
Hi, I am also on Xarelto, and have been since December (I'm a 42 yr old F and have been recommended to be on it for life). I have been having irregular bleeding and blood clots since then (minimum 14 day periods). Apparently…the iud "mirena" has helped a large percentage of women in our situation. I am having one placed in April…I am currently using "depo provera" another birth control method to help control the bleeding- it has helped with the "quantity and volume" of blood and clots but the bleeding is still a long duration….I am taking a high dose of iron to keep my hemoglobin levels, which has been good for my energy levels…I hope you have a good doctor to help with this- it's been a very emotional past few months since the blood thinners, and I can totally empathize with you…hope this helps - dina
Hi, I just started xarelto a month ago and I am so upset that it has caused me to have heavily bleeding with clots. Prior to starting xarelto, I was taking Coumadin, rephresh supplements and apple cider vinegar and no problems.
I have only been on Xarelto for a couple weeks. I have also been told that I should take Xarelto life long. I wasn't expecting a bothersome period since I've only been taking it for a few weeks but it has turned out to be awful. After reading these comments I see I'm not alone!
I am also on xarelto and my periods have been very heavy with clots. Just wanted to let everyone know they are not alone! Not fun!
Wow, I am so glad I came on this site and looked this up!! I too am on this medication and have been living an insane nightmare for three weeks! This morning I was convinced id lost most of my blood and wasnt going to survive this much longer, but after reading these posts I can calm the hell down! Lol. I havent had a period for over 12 years now with only having a mild spotting maybe five days in the past 12 years! I was just starting the process of figuring out why this was the case and if it was early menopause... guess I solved that question really fast! And then I was thinking maybe im having all 12 years worth of periods at once??? It is unreal, grose, scary and so many other words, that I dont even know what to do! I have a blood clot in my leg which is why I am on this, but I also had a massive heart attack in 2009 and since taking this med a lot of my complications have stopped, so Dr's say they may keep me on it permanently.
I was previously on plavix and they took me off of it after five years and put me on baby aspirin, which they are telling me to continue taking.
The bleeding is understandable, its the huge blood clots that scare me! And the amount of them!!! I was on 15mg 2X/day and then as of Friday i started 20mg 1X/day. I was hoping to goodness that it would calm down but it hasnt! I cant even leave my house, never mind go to work! I am a city transit driver lol. Not many bathroom breaks..or not often anyways! I have one more week off in hopes of this at least becomming bearable!
The price its costing to buy all these supplies... got always purple overnight extra longs... anyone that has this, GET THOSE!! I didnt know anything about which pads were good or bad... these ones are nice and thick..not the crappy this ones, and they spread out wide at yur butt to protect yur whole back end! They are great! I have to sleep with a towel under me, a huge pile of toilet paper and then a pad! Oh, and iv also gone thru an entire box of huggies wipes! GOD BLESS HUGGIES BABY WIPES!!!
WELL GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!! HOPE THIS DOESNT LAST FOREVER!! Im tired of being all weak, I want my strength back! good thoughs good thoughts ♡
I have been on xarelto since I had massive bilateral pulmonary embolisms and dvts.. In September 2014.. My periods before the clots were controlled by the depo shot also.. As soon as I had my clots they took me off tgedepo shots since it causes blood clots.. I had a unterine ablation done in march 2015 because my periods were so long and heavy I would go for 25+ days in a row stop for 2-3 days and start right back up.. They said DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING WITH ESTROGEN nothing at all no meds no creams nothing. They still don't know what caused the clotting as soon as I seen u were on the depo shot along with a blood thinner I was immediately alarmed that's very very risky it puts u at a very high risk for more clots
I started Xarelto last Thursday fora blot clot in my arm from a midline. I started my period teh next day (4 days early-i am down to the day on my cycle... ) and I have bled horridly. I had a uterian ablation(burned my uterus, light period to none at all) and only spot now, I had this done 3 years ago because of heavy bleeding. I am soaking a super plus tampon in 15 minutes and clotting so bad I feel them coming out. (very gross) Forget this med, I am stopping it and they can give me something else...

I'm in Australia and have the same issues. None of the doctors seem to know anything about Xarelto. Reading these posts have been concerning and comforting. I'm not the only one going through this. They say I need to be on it for life. But there has to be another way. You can't live like this. Constantly being tired and bleeding for weeks on end. As most of you know going out can be mortifying when spillage happens. I've found Incontinence pants are great as they avoid spillage and last longer than heavy pads. Also great at night. Not waking up in a pool. I'm going to contact Xarelto as there seems to be no guidence to GPs for heavy cycles or antidote. Feels great to be a guineapig with no solutions in sight. Maybe warfarin is a better answer.
All I can say is, if this effected a MAN it wouldn't be happening! 50 F hospitalized with Afib mild Stroke. Told I would be on this 4 Life.
1st period in hospital was 9 days. Male doctor just laughed, said he had no idea how long it would last.
2nd period now, I'm on day 15. Going to get blood work tonight. Given the option of a Hysterectomy or that shot that supposedly stops your period. Seems like Guess Work to me!
I wear two overnight, extralong Purple pads and go through those in 2 hrs. Can't make any sudden moves as a geyser erupts with 5-6 inch blood clots. I "sleep" with the pads, shorts, a towel under me and I end up changing underwear by morning. I have to bring extra undies to work, and $$$ worth of pads. I'm on day 15. Feel very weak. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. During these many days, flow is extra heavy - then after 6 day sor so will stop for about 3 hours, then start all over again. There has got to be a more natural, better way than this. Can't I just eat more fish oil supplements and up my dosage of aspirin?
I have just started Xarelto, and this first period has been horrible. The bleeding has bees so bad that I have been afraid to leave the house for more than an hour at a time. Please tell me this gets better?
Hi I've been on xarelto for 11months for a DVT in my right arm near the elbow everything was fine until January 12 ,2018 when i started experiencing tingling then numbness in my left hand and foot; my son call the EMT's and had me transport to the hospital where i was diagnosed as having a series of mini strokes four days before my 54th birthday. prior to that everything was relatively fine and i was in good health..but since my release in January this bleeding issue has become a problem with fatigue, dizziness, and frequent trips to the ER.
My OB/GYN will not chance an additional surgery because my stoke doctor is opting that i continue with xarelto for now on. this is very frustrating and keep me from going to work for a large number of days. what employer is going to keep an employee that can't come to work 4 to 5 days out of the month.
