Why do they prefer Lyrica over soma for muscle spasms, and severe neurological painful conditions, because Lyrica has many terrible side effects according to my own experience between the two!
Why have most doctors stopped prescribing carisoprodol for severe muscle spasms?

because of people using the drug to get messed up on. mainly women. Soma translates to coma in Greek. an average size woman will more than likely die from taking 4 at one time. so now it is a narcotic even though there is nothing physically addictive in it. it's the drug abusers you can blame for that. i still get mine but Lyrica or anything else has never worked for me. Soma is a very good medication. it's the people who dont even need it that mess it up for those who actually do need it. talk to your Dr and express yourself. if the Lyrica dont cut it. .tell them what does.
My pain mgmt clinic stopped prescribing Soma. I have talked to my doctor and he absolutely refuses to give it. I have thought about changing doctors but I live in Texas and I think a lot of doctors here are not prescribing it any more. I have been going to this clinic for 5 years and like my doctor. He says he will precribe anything else that might work for me. Right now I'm taking flexiril but its not working!!
Flexeril may help some people, but be careful. After prolonged usage, you will start having vision problems, & degeneration of the muscle around the eyeball. (rolling eyes). Soma is a shortacting drug, & used wisely, as prescribed, it won't kill you, it's not habit forming. Flexeril stays in the system causing hangover affects, & lethargy in the mornings. Not so with Soma.
you find me a case of a woman dying from 4 soma's and I will show you where the pot o gold is at the end of the rainbow
Soma is becoming an abused drug. Sadly it does work great for pain and is a good muscle relaxer, but it is different from other muscle relaxers in that it has a sedative type property in it comparable to the old drug known as Miltown. Soma abuse has been on the rise. I have taken these before without a problem and never gave it a second thought. Pulling them off the market would be stupid as I believe most do not abuse them, but there has been an escalation in Soma abuse and apparently it can be alot more habit-forming in contrast to other kinds of muscle relaxers.
Soma has been a wonder drug for me--the only thing that has ever touched my extreme, chronic, neck and shoulder pain! It's really sad that people who abuse it could ruin it for those of us who truly need it... I've been on the same dose since 2006, and it still works for me!
I am furious about Texas DEA trying to crack down so hard on Soma. I have so many issues, severe neck injury, lower back injury, constant neck & shoulder spasms. The ONLY relief I get is with my Soma. I take 1 tablet in the afternoon, and 1 tablet @ bedtime. I don't abuse my Soma, & I don't like being treated like I'm just a dopehead. When I was working, and had insurance, there was NO problem. The clinic I go to had no problem prescribing them plus my 10/325 hydrocodone for over 2 years, with practically a pat on the back everytime I made my monthly visit. They did refer me for an MRI at my request, which showed how severe my neck is injured. Once I lost my job due to this injury, I lost the insurance, & I have to drive over 45 miles to the clinic, pay $50. office visit, then all I hear is how I am going to have to get on pain management. These clinics are outrageous.
So, if indeed they do pull Soma off the market, I will live in constant pain, to the point of not being able to get out of bed. So, for all of the abusers out there that just want to eat pills to be high, thanks so much. When, or if you get old & you truly need meds to help with sincere medical problems, remember, you messed it up for LEGITIMATE PATIENTS.
Yes, I totally agree with you--- there is no earthly reason to take Soma off the market, for those of us who truly need it and don't abuse it! There are a lot more powerful drugs out there that the docs don't seem to have any hesitation in giving--why pick on Soma???
Good luck to you,

I SOOO understand your frustration Mary and Legit. When this question was first posted I was not angry... I was pissed off!! Like the both of you I have major medical problems and when they took the Soma away it was just horrible. I never abused mine either. I took 2-3 a day for over 4 years. Never had to increase the dosage and still after all that time got great relief from the awful muscle spasms.
My pain mgmt doc then put me on what I call the medi-go-round. Making me try one muscle relaxer after another. Like I said it was horrible. Another thing I discovered was that OxyContin didn't work as well anymore because of the formula change. On Soma I didn't notice as much because of the relief I was getting FROM the Soma. I ended up being in so much pain that I couldn't function. The pm docs solution was put me on more powerful opiates. UGGGGG...
There is more to the story and I will share later but have to get the kiddos stuff ready for tomorrow. I have some suggestions that might help if anyone is interested. Good luck to you both.
Hugs -Terri-
Thanks, Terri... always open to suggestions...

Amen. I am having the same problem. I have fibromyalgia and can't get the soma anymore.
It is also a neural relaxer.
Hi curious george,
I have no problems getting Soma. I am however terrified to take it.
If you cannot get it, ask for Baclofen, it works wonders for me!!
Have you ever tried it???
Best wishes,
I have heard at a few pain clinics that soma is being taken off of the market. Interestingly enough I did NOT hear this at a doctor's office. And, while I was at the neurologist's office I asked if they had heard this rumor and they had not. Seems only the pain management clinic I was going to was cutting back/off of the soma. I wonder if it has something to do with the feds watching the pharmacies and clinics as to the number of scripts written and filled as well as the number of patients. I just felt (at the pain clinic I was going to, so am not speaking for ALL, please do not hear that from this post) that the clinic was pushing as many ppl thru that was legally possible without drawing attention to their activity. No doubt they ran through doctors and medical assistants like exlax thru a baby! (used that analogy before, and it seemed to fit!) I was pretty focused on getting my pain meds and didn't care at the time.
Now looking back, being honest with myself, it was clearly a 'pill mill'.
Best wishes,
~Jillynnie
My pain mgmt clinic just took all patients off SOMA. I am so frustrated!! It is the only muscle relaxer that works for me. Are they all doing this?
tic,
I don't know what state you are in, but it does seem to be happening in Texas.
Try Barcelfon (sp?) I think that is about the closest thing to Soma now.
Hope this helps,
~Jillynnie
Thanks jillynnie - I am in Texas. It may have something to do with the fact that Soma is now a controlled substance now. I don't know if this is a state by state thing. I will ask about this medication though. Thanks again.
You are most welcome. :)
Please feel free to join in on any questions and comments. This is a wonderful site and great tool for help in many areas.
Good luck!

I work as a pharmacy technician and they put billions into making those drugs we have thousands of soma's on our shelf and they are not going anywhere All these "Taken off the market" rumors are BULLSHIT!!! Nothing has been taken off the market or will be lol dont worry
I have used Soma since 1999 and never have had a problem with this. I live in Utah and went to my Dr apt and was told at that apt that the University of Utah is not allowed to prescribe Soma anymore due to the overdosing of this product. I'm upset as I can't take Flexeril or Tizanidine. the Soma is the only thing that has helped. I was also advised that they are taking it off the market.
I live in Maryland my pain dr. Just took me and everyone else off soma something about the FDA.Also they don't want to be giving it to seniors because of the balance problem. I am having a hard time trying to find something that will work for me I have tried all the most known prescriptions and still haven't found any that work.
The only thing that lyrica does is make me gain weight... good luck with that.
