What side effects happen at each dose of 50,000 units of vitamin D?

I took my first dose of 50,000 units of vitamin (D2) this past Friday night. I was prescribed 50,000 units once a week for 12 weeks.
I experience adrenalin rush symptoms along with a little shakiness and insomnia. However once I fell asleep, I stayed asleep until I woke up abruptly feeling like I couldn't catch my breath and my heart pounding... I sat straight up in bed and violently coughed. It really scared me. After I calmed down all was fine and I was able to relax.
Now at 4 days later I just feel achy, a little nauseated, some stomach upset/cramps. I am finding myself a little scared to take the 2nd dose this friday night...
Has anyone had a similar experience? What can I expect after the 2nd dose? 3rd dose? etc.
Thanks so much for any advice you can give. ~ Capitola : )

Well, it is rare to see adverse reactions to Vit D. I am and have been deficient for a long time. I am prescribed 50k units three times a week and 5k units Vit D3 each day. I haven’t had any issues with this and have been on this regimen for years. However, I would suggest that you have your Vit B levels checked and Folic Acid. Often Vit D deficiency is associated with deficiencies in these as well. Also, are you taking this in the morning or at night? Remember that in order for your body to process Vit D you need sun exposure or it won’t do you any good taking it. About 15 minutes a day is sufficient. Are you taking this before you eat? After you eat? Or without food? It can make a difference when you take Vit D. Ask your Doctor or Pharmacist. Hope this helps!

I take 50000 IU weekly and have never experienced any side effects, and I don't recall having any after my initial dose either.

I experienced major itching around my waistline and stomach after taking 50000 units of D3. I am also experiencing increased pain at the site of spinal fusion surgery. The fusion pain wasn't bothering me at all, until I took the D3. I am debating whether or not to take the second dose next week.

I took my first 50000 unit dose of D3 and woke up with terrible itching around my waist. Benadryl spray relieved it some.

I experienced almost everything you did, and when this was brought to the ER doctor and my primary doctor both said they never heard of such side effects. My primary even documented that I told her my side effects with heart palpitations, S.O.B., and when I did fall asleep it felt like a triple dose of the strongest Zanix dosage one can take with overwhelming lethargy. At that time I was my poor mother's, a quadriplegic, 24/7 caregiver. I was finally able to wake up to my mother's screams and my 3 mo. old Chiweenie howling and jumping on my chest. I slept for >13 hrs my mother told me. I was diagnosed having Diabetes and according to my doctor am a new Christal Meth user! this is because of the side effect of increased hr. and palpitations. Never on Meth but in reviewing my Medical Hx, I had all the signs of being a Diabetic 2 yrs prior and I had no issues with my Vit. D3 levels and given this one dosage of Vit. D3 by mistake. Do you smell a cover-up?

I feel like crap after I eat, like what Lisa said. Heart palpitations, jittery, super sleepy. it lasts for a hour or so, then i feel fine. Also I feel like crap if my meals are 4 or more hours apart now. I thought I was starting to become a diabetic. I had blood work done, everything is normal.

The day of my 2nd dose, this past sunday(today is friday) I've felt a lot of symptoms others are talking about EXCEPT that mine occur every time I eat. About an hour after eating I get heart palpitations, jittery, weakness, etc. Feel crappy for an hour or so. Then feel good. Had blood checked on Wednesday and everything is normal. So weird that I feel good briefly between meals, bedtime, and morning.(have felt like going to bed earlier since the adrenaline rush tires me. Any thoughts?? ~Lisa

I’ve taken this supplement 3 times. I wake up hot with trouble breathing. I turn a fan on my face to help. After this last dose my bones hurt so much I need help standing up. I’m to weak to do anything yet it hurts to even lie down. My recent blood work showed my vitamin D to be a little low. I’m am stopping this supplement and going back to my regular decreased dosage of 1000 units a day. I felt good then. This is horrible pain. I hope this helps. Good luck.

I took one pill last Thursday and I noticed bloating, very gassy and nausea. Today is 4 days later and I still feel the same way. I haven’t took another pill since. I’m not sure it’s the vitamin but I really think so because before I took the pill I was fine

I switched to an OTC 5,000 IU daily dose after experiencing the same after taking two doses of the 50,000 IU / once a week I was prescribed (my levels were very low at 8.7). My body reacted much better to this lowered dose and I’m still getting 35,000 IU a week, which may take me longer to get my levels up but worth it to avoid the side effects. It’s worth it to try lowered doses, because the improvements I’ve felt physically and mentally once my levels increased are drastic. I’m surprised doctors haven’t addressed this and still defer to the high dose by default. I will say, if I miss a dose, I do start to notice symptoms of the vitamin D deficiency creeping back in (anger, fatigue, trouble sleeping, etc.)

It's probably too late to mention this for the person who asked the question... but, Vitamin D makes you absorb calcium. These people could have had hyperparathyroidism which is high calcium in your blood and taking Vitamin D could cause a stroke or heart attack if blood calcium is high. A kidney doctor prescribed the 50,000IU for me and I happened to research why I need that much and found I had symptoms of hyperparathyroidism, had a scan which showed a tumor which meant my condition was primary hyperparathyroidism and some people have secondary, meaning there is no tumor but the condition is caused by kidneys or something else.

I ended up in the hospital taking doctor prescribed 50000 units once a week. I don't understand why they think this is a good way to (as my doctor called it) "filling the bucket". Smaller doses every day or every other day seem like a less wreckless way to meet your body's needs. Never again! Now I take it in smaller doses, every other day and get outside as much as possible.
