I have had several heart attacks and have 2 stents in my heart. i also have stents in both legs. this is due to vascular disease. i have chronic back pain and have been on lortab 10 for a couple of years - 2x a day. they don't seem to help anymore. i also take plavix, asprin, and a number of other meds. any ideas on what i should ask my Dr. for to help with the pain?
What is the strongest pain medication I can take for chronic back pain?

i have chronic back pain have had 4 back surgeries 3 of which were fusions. i have been in pain for 11 yrs and have been to multiple pain mgmt dr's. i have been on every opiate and narcotic from A-Z. i strongly disagree with morphine, it highly addictive and it turned me into a crazy person. i would leave the house in the middle of the night return and not no where i went, my husband said it was like living with an evil twin. i am currently very happy with my pain mgmt dr now. i am on methadone, valium, Dalmane, xanax, norco and a beta blocker for my s. tachycardia. hope this was helpful, any questions please emaill. amber
Best bet is probably Morphine, only side effect to trouble you is constipation, senacot tabs every other dose (or more) and time usually amiliearate stuffed-up-itus, Morphene can be used in whatever dose necessary to do the trick, some care to observe overdose, stops breathing like all opoids, watchout for timed release formulations, easy to use but easy to overuse if you don't pay attention, fairly wide margin for error, whole system benefits from M, sorry about the social stigma from the unknowing.
Change that to Best drug no doubt is Nalbuphine (nubain) safe for mothers in labor, can't overdose, no addiction, not a schedule drug (it can be called in) effective as morphene mg for mg, no constapation, injectable only, one pin prick and 3-5 mins later 'relief', great drug, now get a doc to prescribe it.
Have you tried or has anyone recommended Nalbuphine (Nubian) ?
Literally safer than Mothers Milk, used for mothers to be in labor.
My credentials for suggesting this are similar to all else but usually with a 20-50 year extension. I've used Nalbuphine exclusively from before it went generic 17+ years, efficacy of Morphine without addiction, possibility of overdose (impossible), constipation and its NOT a schedule drug, can be called in.
Good luck-hopes for a pain free moment. Fibro (Myalgia) Alpha ( the first one) - still looking for a challenge to that.
At this point, you definitely need to switch meds, because it sounds as though your body has become tolerant of the Lortab. My recommendation is that you ask to move on to a morphine pill. There are many to choose from - my first choice is MS Contin, Dilaudid, or just plain Morphine Sulfate. Stay away from mentioning Demerol, because it's a great painkiller in a shot, but is a worthless pain reliever in a pill. Percocet isn't much better than Lortab, and builds a tolerance quickly. The only other thing I can think of is methadone, but I'd try MS Contin first. It's a great painkiller. Good luck to you.
This is for some comments about Lortab in other responses. I have chronic thorascic back pain, mostly from difficult to control relentless muscle spasms affecting much of that area at the same time. At first I used Lortab and Percocet. I liked the Lortab because it acted fast and well until I developed the usual tolerance that others have mentioned. I found that by stopping the Lortab entirely for about 3 days, the tolerance effects went away and it becan working well again afterwards. I didn't need to repeat this more than once every few weeks. Not everyone has the 'luxury' of doing this, but if you can I recommend trying it to see if you can handle going without opiates for a few days. It beats switching to something else if it had worked well for you at one time. Lortab is an effective drug. Its short acting effects and quickly devloped tolerance are the biggest drawbacks.
The short acting part can be addressed by more frequent dosing. Tolerance is more of a challenge to overcome. FYI - I was on methadone, 90 mg, for months. I quit that because it did nothing for my situation. I am intrigued by the Tramadol suggestion - I hope it can help me.
Lortab, hydrocodone, vicodin, percocet, norco, percodan are all exactly the same ingredients just made by a different company. Trying methadone for pain relief is stupid as it is a derivative made to get you off of pain medications as is suboxone. (though you can get a prescription for suboxone and you cant for methatdone you have to go to a clinic daily). My suggestion is to ask for fentanyl patches. They start at 25 mg and go up as high as 150 mg but these patches last 72 hours. For my chronic bach pain, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis this is finally what helped me. And I make the patches last 5 days instead of 3 as they are still giving out relief. Good luck to you as I truly understand pain.
Methadone is available in tablet form
by prescription for those with chronic pain. Whether it is the best choice is another matter, just wanted to correct this information.
ask for oxycodone or oxymorphone its a combination of oxycodone a.k.a percoet and mphine
first of all as with all people on here I want you to be safe with whatever you do, I am on Dilaudid ( they have drugs such as Norco) like Lortab, MS Contin, Duragesic the one answer that seems to ring true is what works for one person will not for another, tell your doctor the meds don't work and be as open as possible (I do with my doctor) I am trying to give you general ideas but perhaps if you tell him that what you task does not work then he will help you find a medicine that will work and that will also be safe
I have been placed on Opana extended release but I about a week ago fractured (December 2011) my ribs, the pain got so bad that even though the insurance company will not pay for it I have been put on Lidoderm, it's the patch that you wear for 12 hours and off for 12 hours but it is the thing that I have found that makes the pain more tolerable for me, just wanted to add that it might not do the same for you but I got to the point to where I was in so much pain that I was willing to give it a try. I wish you the very best of luck back problems are difficult. caringsonbj
i myself suffer from 2 herniated discs and my doctor gives me oxycodone 15 mg @ 2 pills every 6 hours and it worked great for the first week now i have built up an immunity to them just as you have to what you take unfortunatly that happens with all pain meds i myself started out on vicodin 7.5/750 apap and went up through the ranks past lortab to percocet and now the oxy's ask for the oxycodone it comes in several different strenghts and should provide you with some relief.
I would ask about Opana ER.
pecocets are stronger then lortabs thats what works best for me is pecocets
Fetynal (or how ever you spell it)
I have tryed alot of meds, for the price and the side affects i am now on M S cotin and the only side affect so far is a little sleepy ,i also have high blood pressure and know ms is safe.I got a tolerance to oxycodone very fast and dont want to go up in dose,Isay ms contin is worth a try!
I think you should try asking your dr for either morphine , percocet, or dilauded. If you have chronic back pain and need to be on a pain reliever for a long time then anything with the least amount of tylenol would be the best thing to be on.
