What can happen if you do use salicylic acid on an open wound or damaged skin?

Salicylic acid is a keratolytic (peeling agent). It causes skin shedding.
If salicylic acid is applied to broken skin it will kill the skin, creating more exposed raw skin and a bigger wound. This wound is at risk of developing an infection.
