What are the dangers of using Nicotine Lozenges for 3 years?

I have been smoke free for 3 years (smoked 50 yrs), but now I can't give up the lozenges. I have been told that these are as dangerous as smoking--is that right? Also I am having extensive dental work done, would using the lozenges be the problem?
