Hi, I have just been prescribed sertraline for anxiety and insomnia. I am wanting to know how long it will take to work, I am suffering so bad from lack of sleep.
Does sertraline help with insomnia?

Sertraline will help you with your anxiety, but I do not think it will help you with your insomnia, a very common side effect is insomnia affecting up to 21% of people being treated with this antidepressant.
Somnolence is also a vey common side effect affecting up to 13% of patients.
This medication is not a hypnotic/sedative it is a SSRIs antidepressant commonly used to treat anxiety, depression, OCD, social anxiety disorder and PTSD.
I suffer from insomnia for over 20 years and I have not seen the use of Sertraline, in this case, to be used to treat insomnia.

There is an antipsychotic used off-label that in low doses (25mgs to 50mgs) will knock you out, it is Quetiapine brand name Seroquel, it treats sleeping problems/insomnia as I have mentioned prescribed off-label.
Ask your DR. about this medication
"Quetiapine is commonly used off-label for treatment of insomnia."

Thanks for your reply,I think I've been prescribed this as I do suffer with anxiety so I am assuming he is thinking if my anxiety calms I will sleep better.
You are welcome.
