All of us seem to be chemically different, so medecines affect us in different ways. I'.m 5'7" 150 lbs.
I had a 7 day 500mg 3x/day regimen, finishing last dose noon yesterday. That night we went out for Japanese food and I started hurling about 11:30PM. Finally ceased at about 4AM. None of the other 3 people with me got sick at all from our meal (they drank alot!) and we all had nearly the same dishes. Today there remains background nausea, just like during the 7 day regimen, not severe but noticeable.Ate a little late this AM and it seems fine.
I like and drink alcohol beverages regularly, but stopped entirely since starting this Metro regimine, as I was warned by my doc. Have no consumed any yet.
Something made me vomit and I strongly suspect the Metro. The restaurant food I ate may have had a some residual alcohol from cooking. But not much. It may just be the Metro. Difficult to know.
I'm currently on a 7day round of Metro, I'm normally pretty good about abstaining from alcohol during rounds of antibiotics, but I work as a dancer and had a particularly unpleasant night at work this evening, and decided to have two gin drinks over the corse of my 8 hour shift, about 5 hours after my last drink I woke up nauseous and salivating, and promptly started vomiting, not projectile, and certainly not uncontrollably, but I woke up at 4:40am and it's now 6:28am and I've had to get up to puke 6 times, and it feels like I'm not done.. I live in New Orleans, this city is made of drinkers I really wished my doctor would have stressed that vomiting was the side affect of drinking and this particular antibiotic... Ugh.
I think it depends on the person. I am 5ft1, 135 lbs. I drink with metronidazole when prescribed. Not sure if it's because my high tolerance for alcohol, considering I have drinks about 5 times a week.
Ok, I have never posted anything on the internet I don't even have facebook. I am an alcoholic in the sense I drink probably 3-4 dark beers a day. Day for of this medication I thought what the hell one beer won't hurt. I had ONE beer at 8pm and was up by 1am with projectile vomiting. I couldn't get off the bathroom floor for hours. Don't do it. I hope this message spares someone. One beer even if you are an alcoholic is not worth it.
I did not read the label or consult with the pharmacist but after the first week I noticed the warning about drinking alcohol.
It has not affected me having 2-3 drinks daily.
I was taking Flagyl 500 mg twice daily last weekend and got drunk one night. I am 195lbs, 6'5", mid thirties. I was fine that night and fine the next day and the next day after that. Drink were vodka and soda. I am not saying go out and get hammered while taking Flagyl, and in retrospect it was a pretty dumb thing to do. I think it may just depend on the person, and how sensitive they are to alcohol in the first place.
I'm on 500mg 2x. In my 3rd day, I have consumed 2 beers and 2 vodkas per day. I have had no ill side effects whatsoever, except for the result of the alcohol. I tend to think its the Flagyl that is making man of you sick. I know other who never drink and still get sick from Flagyl. The stuff just makes you feel bad like laculose.. We're all the same but we're all different...
I am 6'2'' and 225 lbs. I take 500 mg 4x per day. UC w/ C diff infection. I drank a 375 of Jim Beam 2 separate times with no ill effects.
It is an ABSOLUTE mistake to drink while taking these antibiotics. I drank a lot while on the medication for one day and I seemed to be fine until I woke up the next morning. I threw up frequently, even when there was nothing in my stomach left, I could not eat or drink anything without getting sick, I had a terrible migraine, my body ached, and I felt extremely nauseous. Although I got drunk, my advice is to steer clear of alcohol all together. My symptoms lasted about 17 hours and I was minutes away from going to the hospital. Hope this helps!
I have been givin the antibiotic flagyl for an infection from my tooth... Well as I am reading up on this medicine it says no drinking at all... well yesterday I drank some beer and had one today ... is it safe to start my medicine in the morning
I must be an anomaly. The first time I was prescribed this medication I wasn't explicitly told not to drink and I didn't read the full instructions on the bottle (most antibiotics are to be taken twice a day). I drank a glass or two of wine at least 2 or 3 nights during the 7 day course and I felt fine. One the last night I took it I went to a party with a friend and drank quite a few drinks. I had a worse than usual hangover the next day but no vomiting. I'm debating taking that risk again this time (the wine not the party).
Upjohn tried to develop metronidazole as an alcohol abuse treatment, but it didn't work. However, it appears that text remained in the label. Tried it out personally, 5 glasses of wine while on metronidazole, no ill effects, except the normal wooliness. Recent article:

AB BACKGROUND: It is common practice to warn against intake of alcohol (ethanol) when taking metronidazole because of the risk of an effect similar to disulfiram (Antabuse). In this article we investigate whether such a warning has any real basis. KNOWLEDGE BASE: The article is based on a review of relevant literature retrieved through a search in PubMed. A search was also made in the WHO's database on adverse effects.
RESULTS: No in-vitro studies, animal models, reports of adverse effects or clinical studies provide any convincing evidence of a disulfiram-like interaction between ethanol and metronidazole. INTERPRETATION: The warning against simultaneous use of alcohol and metronidazole appear to be based on laboratory experiments and individual case histories in which the reported reactions are equally likely to have been caused by ethanol alone or by adverse effects of metronidazole. Recent research does not confirm a clinically relevant interaction between ethanol and metronidazole
Having read this and other sites I was interested to know what time period after taking metronidazole it was ok to drink. This is my experience. 190 lbs male, 6 ft tall. I was on 400mg every 8 hours for 5 days for a gum infection. From what I've read this is a high dose. I heeded the advice to abstain from all alcohol during the course but wanted to go out and drink sooner than the 48/72 hour advice. I took my last dose at 9pm and started drinking at 3pm the following day so 18 hours after finishing the course. I made sure that I'd had a lot of water to drink before any alcohol to try and flush as much AB from my system beforehand. I started with a pint of shandy (50% beer, 50% lager) and drank fairly slowly and felt ok. I then had 3 more pints followed by a meal and 2 more pints and a bottle of beer after that. Did I throw up and feel ill? No. Did I enjoy my beer and have a good night? Not really.
It was ok but I definitely had to force it down and felt a bit more drunk than I normally would have. So in summary, maybe the 48/72 hours is a bit OTT but if at all possible I would advise others to heed this advice another time and not bother to drink for at least 24 hours + after finishing the course. Hope that helps others
I finished a 5 day course of metronidazole on Saturday night at 9pm. Sunday night at 9pm (so 24 hours after my last dose) I drank 2 small glasses of prosecco. I drank them slowly over time whilst eating a meal. I didn't feel sick at all and felt fine the rest of the evening and the next day. I'm sure everyone is different and maybe drinking in excess would cause more of an issue whilst on metronidazole. I had the opportunity to go out and continue drinking but I chose not to as I didn't want to make myself ill by drinking more. I have read lots of stories online some people say don't drink and some people say they drank and were fine. Your health is obviously more important than a drink.. but that's my experience!
The chemist warned me definitely not to take any alcohol & as I had drunk the night before he even said to wait to take the first metronidazole. He said it would cause projectile vomiting & was used for alcoholics to help them stop drinking. I have now been on this drug for 4 days in the 7 day course. I have drunk one beer, two bottles of sparkling wine & one bottle of red wine in that time (evenly spaced over the 4 days - the same alcohol amount I normally drink) & to tell the truth other than feeling a little nauseous as is normal taking any antibiotics I have had no problems. So I don't expect there to be more problems down the track either but it is always good to be warned and if you do get sick you can't say you weren't warned, but I guess not everybody has the same reaction. I also take sucralfate which is a mucosal protector for the upper GI tract so maybe that provides me with protection from vomiting.
