So I clearly took over the recommended dosage of melatonin (NOT PURPOSEFULLY). I have most of the 'less common' melatonin side effects including mild anxiety, irritability, confusion and short-lasting feelings of depression.
And now I want to know how I can get rid of them.
I have been having a sleeping problem for over two years now and when I went to the sleep study they said I had delayed sleep disorder or something like that.
I know I need to go back to the sleep neurologist but in the meantime What Can I Do?
Added 23 Dec 2015:
I also have "The most common melatonin side effects" Daytime sleepiness, slight headaches and some dizziness.

Cut back to 1mg or less. I had a real problem with hangover when I used more than 1mg More is not better when you use Melatonin

anonymous573; Really there is not much you can do, It takes time now just to get it out of your system and more so because you took to many. You should never take more than what it says on the bottle if you do you could have more serious problems than this if the dose it says does not work than you have to find something else or go back to the doctor. But at this point you are just going to have to wait for all of the Melatonin to get out of your system.

Anonymous it should not take that long to get out of your system depending on how many you took. this is the clearance in your blood. The plasma half-life is short, 20 to 50 minutes, 6 , 7 , 12 and plasma levels return to baseline within 24 hours after discontinuation of chronic dosing of less than 10 mg/day. 7 , 13 Doses of melatonin 5 mg produce estimated peak blood levels 25 times above physiological levels, but do not alter endogenous melatonin production. 7 , 13 This would mean about 5 hours per 10mg so you well have to decide how long it might be in you hope this helps

I have just been so desperate for sleep and nit just any sleep but normal sleep. Like going to bed with the sun and waking up with it. And I sleep so well outside like during camping trips because my eyes detect the light and I naturally wake up and go to sleep at normal times.

I took 1 10mg pill at 1:05pm. Then I took the second at 1:14pm, the third at 1:22 p.m., the 4th at 1:23 p.m. in the 5th at 1:31 p.m.. that is 50mg and then i went to TRY to sleep and it was so weird I could close my eyes and like physically I was exhausted but mentally like my mind was racing. So I think i fell asleep until 5:20 p.m. for dinner. Then went back to bed at 5:45 p.m. and woke up at 11 o'clock at night.

anonymous573; The way I'm seeing that is you were taking 1 about every 10 minutes more does not mean better you must be very careful taking medications even over the counter like this you can get to a toxic amount. Just like what happened you ended up with so much you could not sleep even a normal sleeping pill can take 1/2 to 1 hour to kick in. you can't be doing that. With that amount you took it could be as much as a week to get all of that out of your system if I have that right and I believe I do and that would be from the night you took all of these.

Yea im stupid. I learned my lesson and I just found out from a piece of paper in my tired state when I wrote stuff down to eventually show the sleep study people. But I found out I took 12 in the period of one night and then two . So i took 5 thinking yea this has worked for me in the past but no I guess my body changed so I then took 7 the next day. So that is 12. 120mg.

So I have not taken melatonin since 1:30 a.m. on December 22nd. Im never going to touch the pill again. I am going to look for more natural ways to sleep and deal with the selective sleep disorder thing.

Im sorry for the mixed up reply the confusion is getting to me. I meant to say I took 12, 5 dec. 21st in the afternoon and then 7 the 22nd at 130am. So now.I have to wait till January or so for it to wear off and I go back to normal. And I will try again. And I say try again as in go to the sleep study neurological place and fix it the right way.

Yes that is a great idea Now you can see many people think just because its over the counter you don't have anything to worry about not true at all. So always make sure your doctor knows all the medications encluding vitamins health food products and any over the counter medications. You never know where you can have or get problems from.Best of luck you should be okay now very soon. ... do not take this anymore for any reason now that you see how it can confuse you and it could do this on a much lower dose also.
