It is very inconvenient for me to take this 1/2 hour after a meal. I seem to forget to take it at that time and end up taking it several hours later at bedtime. How critical is this? Am I losing some of the drugs effectiveness?

You are not losing anything, I recommend you set an alarm so you do not forget, that is what I do with my meds, I take about six different ones, and I too forget.
Take the first dose at bedtime to minimize the chances of getting dizzy or fainting. After the first dose, take your regularl dose 30 minutes after the same meal each day, or take exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Take care and do not forget the alarm!
