What is your thoughts on giving a 16 yr old 40mgs of Prozac? She started out on 20mg went to 30mgs if there was some issues and now her Dr wants to put her on 40mgs to see if she can sleep better and interact more with friends.
She does seem to want to spend a lot of time alone and doesn't have a lot of friends that live close by. She's not active in sports only in being on her computer. Still 40mgs Prozac sounds abit much to me as a parent. Thank you Ann
Is Prozac 40mg to much for a 16 yr old?

Hi, Ann!
Prozac is FDA approved to treat children 8 years and older. 40 mg is a middle of the road dose with a daily maintenance dose of 20 - 60mg/day and a maximum of 80mg/day.
It sounds as if her doctor has been monitoring her response to the medication and feels this is an appropriate dosage for her.
Depending on her response she may need to have a dosage adjustment but watch for any side effects as they might occur with the higher dose or recur if she had problems tolerating the 20 or 30mgs.
Best regards to you both.
