why doesn't it help arthritis? This drug WORKS but will not help arthritis pain. I also take morphine sulfate 15 mg er every 12 hours. My pm told me not to use ibuprofen for it, which I don't understand because it's not a narcotic. I have to wait to take the morphine because it's not time for it. My elbow is in a flare. Any suggestions?
Oxycodone and arthritis, been taking oxycodone 15 mg for break through pain, my question is?

That's really strange your doctor told you not to take ibuprofen with no explanation why! Do you have a history of stomach problems, like ulcers, intestinal problems, or heart problems? If so, that may be why he wants you to not take it. If not, I'm at a loss! I say, if you don't have those problems, and you're having pain, take the ibuprofen as needed. Arthritis is mostly treated with anti-inflammatories, so I don't understand that reasoning. I'm allergic to all NSAIDs,so I'm prescribed prednisone for the arthritic pain that the opiates don't touch (it's a corticosteroid). I think your doctor has confused me just as much as he's confused you LOL!
I did take the ibuprofen. I call his office and let them know I don't care how he feels about ibuprofen because I know it works for arthritis. I did get relief the next day. I just saw him Feb. 4 and he asked if my ibuprofen helped. Didn't ask what his reason for not wanting me on it. He is kinda funny but, he is helping my chronic pain.
He maybe on blood thinners. .I take warfarin..my pm says I could take motrin which use to really work on gout and inflamation ..
My Rheumatologist took me off Ibuprofen too. He told me that taking the anti-inflammatory meds day-in day-out for a long periold of time can cause irreversible kidney damage. He then told me not to take ibuprofen at all. However if I felt I needed to take an anti-inflammatory med, I should only take Aleve, But take It sparingly.
Arthritis is often due to inflammation and while opioids do treat pain, they dont treat the inflammation. There are many anti-inflammatory drugs out there. Did your pain doc explain why they dont want you to use ibuprofen? Perhaps another anti-inflammatory would help. Have you consulted a Rheumatologist? Seems strange your PM doc told you not to take ibuprofen. If I were you, I would want to know why. You might try some OTC topicals like Icy Hot or Bengay, Aspercreme, Capsaicin cream etc. These may help with the elbow discomfort.
I tried icy hot. He never said why he doesn't like over the counter medicine for arthritis just that we'll on that after my pain is under control. Don't make any sense to me, maybe has something up his sleeve. Thanks for replying.
Thanks for answers to my question. Went to bed at 3 am this morning and woke up at 6:15 am in pain. Haven't been able to think much because of being tired. I did take ibuprofen anyway, doc will have to get over it. Good nite.
Hope you feel better Mike. Ibuprofen wont interact with Morphine or oxycodone anyway so no worries there. I take them together all the time. My pain doc doesnt mind if I take OTCs with my opioids.
With rheumatoid arthritis you almost always need an anti inflammatory med to get rid of the pain. Things like advil or aleve. Try them along with your pain meds and it may help you out.
