I was asking for peoples opinions about it. Do any of you have or know anybody with kids that are on it? I am worried about the side effects.

I have a 12-year-old daughter. She has been bullied a lot in her other school which led to her depression, anxiety and sight suicidal thoughts. Her psychiatrist recommended that she take escitalopram 10mg every night, and I found out that she has Autism spectrum disorder. I told her psychiatrist and she also recommended Zoloft. I don't want to make the situation worse. Thank you.
Hi I do not recommend this drug. My son 15 was taking it for depression and it made him angry, racing thoughts, etc. Not himself at all. I noticed it made him anxious. I mentioned this to doctor and she did not change his med. I finally slowly began to wean him off. I noticed when he skipped a dose he was better. He was on 50mg and then 25. I did not like this drug. He was having issues at school with teasing and now he’s doing better. He was on this med for 5 months.
My daughter has taken 25mg sertraline for about three months and all of a sudden she is severely allergic to animals. I don't mean the sniffles. She gets a severe reaction. Until last October we lived with cats and dogs inside the home since she was born. She's never had allergies before. About two weeks ago she started showing symptoms and now she has allergic reactions to any animal even after taking Flonase.
The only one thing different in her life is taking sertraline. im very concerned and she is very upset because she loves animals.
Has anything gotten better did anyone find out what was wrong
I hear what your saying and have the same question except my daughter is only 6 yrs old on Zoloft 25mg once a day and told she has" Anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder and oppositional defiant disorder". She was taken concerta, but now on Adderall, Zoloft 25mg. .

•nausea
•diarrhea
•constipation
•vomiting
•dry mouth
•gas or bloating
•loss of appetite
•weight changes
•drowsiness
•dizziness
•excessive tiredness
•headache
•pain, burning, or tingling in the hands or feet
•nervousness
•uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body
•sore throat
•changes in sex drive or ability
•excessive sweating
Good luck
I never saw so many teen with depression and anxiety in my country. In this country there are so many. I am sure that this situation is due to the lack of outside activities and play time that teens had in their childhood. This country need to do something about this. Including more outside activities and play time at school could help a lot.
Please with extreme past extreme experience make sure you have specialist in adolescent psyche. Rule out behavioral attention seeking behavior. friends maipulation, Please do not say not my daughter. Number one the cons out way benefits because of documented suicide rates
I am 14 years old and I am taking it for my severe depression with the loss of both of my parents. Make sure she eats something, I didnt and I felt really dizzy and sick to my stomach, but besides that make sure she isn't suicidal, more than usual if she already is, that is what my aunt and uncle and phsychiatrist are looking for signs for me, but she should be fine on it.
I want to commend you for being brave, honest, mindful and being selfless in responding on a subject that most teens are ashamed to admit or discuss much less post a comment that is very mature. I have 2 step daughters and a son, all 3 of them have mental illness . My oldest was just prescribed "Zoloft " and I hope it helps her, I will let her know the advice you've given on how best to take it . Is there anything else that you would or suggestions for her, she is going to therapy as well. I believe that both are safer and more effective. Thank you.
My daughter is almost 14 and she's been through some things seeing her mother drink at a very young age, both my older children have. I am a recovering alcoholic of nearly 6 years sobriety. My son is 21. My daughter is currently living with granddad. His physician has her on Zoloft, Adderall and now some type of prescription sleep medication. I'm not a fan really. She's started cutting last year and has suicidal thoughts. I believe it has to do partly with the medication. Please help.
I am so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you. I have two 14 year old son's. One has been on Zoloft for a year and it has done wonders for his anxiety. His twin started Zoloft about 2 weeks ago. I am hoping it helps his social anxiety. I am glad you are getting help. God bless you.

i took zoloft for many a year with no side effects. but i was an adult of 35-40 and i have always taken ativan for my panic disorder sometimes i only need small doses and then other times larger ones. although my depression med's change my ativan never dose's best of luck with your child. missy2
I took Zoloft the first time I found out I had depression. The doctor gave me ambien to help me sleep. I was having problems before the Zoloft. But when I took Zoloft I could not sleep. Even if I took a ambien. I would be up for days. One night I wanted to get some sleep so bad. I took 3 ambien and I still didn't fall asleep. Thats when I went off of Zoloft. I started sleeping again once I stopped taking it. But now they think I am also suffering from PTSD. I got Spinal Bacteria Meningitis when I got a epidural while in labor with my now 2 year old son. When they finally discovered I had it. They said if I had waited one more day I would have been dead. But every year around that date something happens with my body. The first year my anxiety came back 10x worse. This year the day before my son's 2nd birthday I had a seizure. So its like my body remembers that date and time frame. So they said I am suffering from PTSD. I hope it goes away. Because I cannot handle something happening every year with me and my body.
A very close friend of mins son suffered from anxiety and depression. He could barely fo to school and worried about everything but held it in He was prescribed Zoloft at age 11. He did very well with. And feels like a 15year old should feel like. The zoloft took away all that baggage he was carrying around with him. Good Luck and God Bless. Being a Mom is hard job and it is refreshing to know that some parents really want to understand their child's isues instead of just pushing them under the run can hope that it is just the age. I hope this helps Barb
Good for all of you. My daughter had severe anxiety as a child and looking back we both wish we had gotten her on meds much younger. She feels like she missed out on so much. She finally went on Zoloft when she was in college. It changed her life!
Now her 9 year old daughter is having the same problems and I foresee her on Zoloft in the future.
It's cruel to make your children suffer.
I also suffered my entire life with anxiety, depression and possibly bipolar 2. Zoloft was amazing. It helped my anxiety and depression. I did have to take meds to sleep though, as it caused me to have insomnia.
I also have a teen age daughter who is being treated for Anxiety, depression and PTSD since the age of 14. At 16 she was switched to Zoloft and it appears to work better than any of the other choices. It can be very difficult
with teens because of the hormonal spikes to know whether the drug is working or not. I have found that my daughter starts becoming agitated,
depressed, moodier than usual, more argumentative and somewhat agressive when the dose needs to be adjusted. Learn your daughter's
behavior patterns and watch them carefully in order to know when the dose is not working. I have found that keeping an open relationship and line of communication helps tremendousely. We talk openly about how she feels,
how she is handling school, and relationships with friends and family. She does not seem to have any serious side effects as of yet. She has been on zoloft for 6 months now. We recently increased the dose due to the above mentioned behavior changes. She is doing good again, but she is also growing and changing alot at this point in her life. The hard part for me is
knowing at what point we should try to wean her off the drugs and see what happens. I hope your daughter improves on Zoloft, and I know how difficult the next few years will be for all of you. Hang in there!!!
I had a friend whose son was started on Zoloft at age 10 and it worked very well for him. Good luck and God Bless. I know it must be hard seeing your daughter struggle with anxiety and PTD.
thank you I am glad to hear that zoloft worked for your friends son. Is he still taking it?
I had the prescriotion for her filled but I am waiting till we go back to the doctor this wednesday so I can ask more questions. I am so worried about her taking this medicine.
That is a great idea. IYou need to know exactly what to expect as all medications haveside effects and work differently. Yes her son is still taking. Zolofy is one of the older medications and so knowing that is still being used says something for the choice your doctor has made. Good Luck. It must be hard having to go through this I will pray that all goes well. Keeo me informed
I started this medicine when i was 16 for ptsd and anxiety as well, it saved my life! Without a doubt. Try not to wait too long to put her on it because the anxiety can be getting worse and worse while shes waiting.
I have no experience with this drug myself, I take other drugs for my PTSD, anxiety, and depression! I just wanted to comment that the anger issues, if any, should be addressed, they can only get worse as kids grow into adults and hormones really kick in. I am dealing with some anger management issues at 45, that I wish my parents had dealt with when I was younger ( they refused medications for me), some kids need to have the medication options available to them under the close watch and monitor of doctors and parents! Good luck and document those side effects to discuss with the doctor.
Since I did my own adjusting his medications to see which works the best. The way I give it to him to this day the doctor says that since he is a whole lot better. No problems with anger or anything to keep doing it. But now I think his dosage of Adderall might need to be upped. He starts acting out at school and home when he needs his meds adjusted. This makes the second day he has come home with a bad color. I am going to talk to the doctor on Monday when I go back. He is having me come in once a week to make sure I don't run out of my Xanax to make sure I don't have another seizure till I can get in to see the specialist. Which isn't till Jan. But the notes always says he is either always talking, won't sit down, etc. We are starting to get those notes.
in no way do i know if this works or not but since gaba is used in memory and concentration i would assume your son could work better on a benzo more than adderal... since hes younger i dont think he would be able to take those however... (adderal is a stimulant and only reduces activity in children who have ADD (I am not a doc. and i do not know how hyper/inattentive your child is so im just stating a fact), dont know why but thats how it works. this is probably one of the most over-perscribed narcotics.)
Actually since he has been on Adderall he is great. He is still a normal kid. You don't even know he is taking anything unless I tell you or you see him take his pill. Last year he did awful in school. Couldn't write, read, didn't know colors, shapes nothing. He started Adderall this summer. School started he has straight A's. He is testing like on second grade lvl and he is in Kindergarten. He had to repeat Kindergarten because we did not know he had ADHD till the end of school year. He had one day of the not eating side affect. He eats me out of house and home. I have to say Adderall works right for him. And he isn't a zombie and he only takes it one time a day. But he got it from me and I got it from my father.
My son was put on concerta for his ADHD and it worked very well.
i am personaly on this (200 mg, supposed to be max dose but can go higher) and i have 0 side effects and it cleared up my depression very well. however it didnt help my anxiety at all so now im trying to ease that my self. with a 14 year old you need to watch them closely. hormonal spikes are very common at this age and thats why there is an increased risk of suicidal thoughts/behaviors.
That was the first medication that the doctor gave me for Depression. He also gave me Ambien to take to sleep. I would be up for days. Take a Ambien and still be awake. I would take like 4 or 5 and still wouldn't go to sleep. Thats the only thing I didn't like about it was the not being able to sleep. She is already having to take depression medication at 14? WOW. With my 6 year old we just found out he has ADHD and he goes through a depression when his daddy is deployed. But the Psych doctor only gave him medicine for his ADHD. That brought out anger that was built up inside. He was out sick and one of his other doctors upped my son's dosage to 20mg. He took his anger out on his daddy's stuff. So when I called the Psych doctor ( that was the day after her painted his daddy's brand new John Deer Riding mower white) he put him on this medication that I am suppose to give him twice a day.
He started looking like a zombie. So I did my own adjusting to his meds. He gets Adderall XR in the morning before school and his Anit anger pill at 5pm. We have no problems out of him. The pill he takes in the evenings helps him come down off of his Adderall without giving us fits. And it helps with his built up anger ( we never knew he had). But since we found all that out my husband is doing his best not to deploy. He see's his children needs him at home.
see another woman, who is a strong beleiver in not druging kids. I think she's on the right track. stopdrugginhdkids.com
To questing,
You talk of not drugging our kids. Should we take away their diabetes medication? Their epilepsy medication?
Or do you just mean the medicine that treats conditions you can't see with your eyes?
Why do you want to take away the medications children with mental illness need. Is it because you believe the children really aren't suffering?
Is it because you don't believe the medicines work?
Or do you think kids with mental illness don't deserve appropriate care?
Some children really do suffer greatly with mental illness.
Sometimes they need to be treated with medicine.
This need should not ignored. Don't pity children who take medication for mental illness.
Pity the children who need medicine for mental illness and are left to suffer without it.
Thank you @butterfly - ending the stigma means realizing that any relief - even in drug form - is needed and appreciated.
Through personal experience over 25yrs of being put on too many different variations of anti-depressants and anti-anxiety pills . The worse being the past couple years where my Doctor put me on meds I didn't need that really messed me up. Finally it was a nurse practioner that did some blood work to see if my problem was more physiological then psychological. The blood work showed that my testosterone levels where abnormally low. Which an endocrinologist told me is a major contribute to depression in men. Which is like post menopausal depression in women. After getting just a couple injections of testosterone over the course of a few weeks it was like the difference between night and day. I'm not depressed, crying everyday like I have been for the past few years, have more energy, etc. I feel positive now and am greatful I came across the nurse practitioner that listened to what I had to say and did the blood work. But I am bitter at the Drs.
That just kept pushing these drugs that did more harm to me? And no good. Over the last 6 months I've talked to 4 different psychiatrists and said " There's no science behind prescribing these different medications for depression or anxiety " And they all said the same thing. " your right, it's all trial and error. These drugs are dangerous to experiment on adults, not to mention children.
