It does not cause sleepiness; however, it can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) which can result in drowsiness and a fatigue like feeling. It is not recommended as a sleep medication. Metformin, brand name Glucophage, is prescribed to lower blood sugar levels in individuals suffering with Type 2 Diabetes.
