I’ve been on Lexapro for almost four weeks (the last three at 10mg). I have terrible, increased anxiety and nocturnal panic attacks while getting used to the drug. I asked my doctor for clonazepam and I’ve taken it for the last two days. She wanted to put me on Seroquel but I didn’t want that drug. Has anyone used these two with success while getting accustomed to the Lexapro? She has me on clonazepam 0.5 mg for 10 days and then .25 as needed for ten days. Praying this will help me get through the worst of the ramped up anxiety and let the Lexapro do its job.
Lexapro and clonazepam - has it worked for you?

I used clonazepam for the first few weeks when I started Lexapro to stop the anxiety attacks and the night time terrors till the Lexapro had built up enough. The dose was .5 like yours. My doctor said half a pill at breakfast, half a pill at lunch and a whole pill at bedtime. Worked like a charm. After a few weeks I started reducing the use of clonazepam and then I only used it at bedtime periodically. I’ve been on 10mg of lexapro now for nearly four years. I still use clonazepam once every two weeks or so if I can’t sleep. Hope this helps.
Scottj, thanks. So, you took 1 mg in total each day? My doc told me to just take the .5 mg in the morning. I’m wondering if at bedtime would be better. Do you recall how long it took for the Lexapro to reach a point where you didn’t need the Clonazepam anymore? Thank you for responding to me.
Yes, 1mg total each day. It stopped the anxiety attacks after the first dose. I almost couldn’t believe it. It was actually 4 1/2 weeks after starting Lexapro that I was able to start weening off the clonazepam. My doctor did not give me a time limit for the clonazepam. I was to use it to help get me through till the Lexapro started working on its own. Clonazepam can be addictive, so I didn’t want to find myself needing it. It been very helpful though.
I’m still having nocturnal panic attacks after three days of Clonazepam use. I sure hope they stop soon and the Lexapro kicks in! It seems like an eternity for these drugs to work.
Maybe ask your doctor if you can do the regimen I did. Your doctor is probably concerned that you will develop an addiction to clonazepam, but the anxiety needs to stop. The first night I took a whole pill as instructed and I slept all night. I felt good in the morning. Damn good. Cause I finally had a good nights sleep. Clonazepam gives your nervous system a neuro-transmitter chemical called GABA. It soothes and relaxes the nerves. Especially the brain. That’s why it works. It doesn’t just dumb you down like Xanax can. I was on 5mg of Lexapro for about a year then I went to 10mg. There was significant improvement. You may need more than I did or maybe a little more time. I knew the Lexapro was working after three weeks. That’s pretty quick. So just hang in there.
I appreciate you sharing your experience. It helps a lot! I’ll check in with my doc on your regimen. All the best.
So have either of you tried Xanax with your lexapro? I am currently struggling with going up on Lexapro to 20mg after being on 10 for years. The anxiety was so bad my dr gave me Xanax- but it takes the jitters away but I’m still left feeling crummy, depressed and searching these sites for other people in my situation. Was wondering if you had bad luck with Xanax?
I’ve had Xanax in the past and it made me feel groggy. I would sleep and feel like I hadn’t slept at all. I hated Xanax. Clonazepam doesn’t make me feel drugged. You may have a different experience with it. It just wasn’t right for me.
