I just been prescribed 10mg by my doctor and I haven't taken it yet. I'm worried about the side effects and if it will make me feel high. I've been dealing with anxiety since I moved away from my home. It's been hard for me to find a job because of my anxiety. I get shakey,my heart races, an I'm really shy. I have finally got job and start in 2 days, but I also just got prescribed this medication. I'm worried about starting my job and medication at the same time because I don't know how the medication will effect me. Any advice?

I forgot to add that I have had previous drug use before. And I never want to feel uncomfortably high again from pills (if that makes sense)

I have to say I made sure that I started out with five mg for two weeks before I started 10mg. I had dry mouth the first time I took it and honestly I think it was because of the anxiety I had about taking it. I take it right before bed so I don't experience any side effects during the day . Everyone is different so I am sure everyone reacts different. This pill has leveled me out to being more relaxed and just more focused. There is still times I can get nervous or overwhelmed but you learn to breathe and help yourself. Therapy is key too if you have time to see someone.
Do some research and stop reading anecdotal baloney on social media threads. Antidepressants are antidepressants ~ you don't get *high* on them unless it's a placebo effect that you have because you're looking to get *high*.
Look, this drug is classed as SSRI. It works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin by the neurons in your brain. Serotonin is a "feel good" chemical in your brain. If more serotonin is allowed to linger in the space between neuron ends (the sweet spot) then you will feel 'happier'. This medicine CAN make you feel high. Although at low doses it's not 100% assured.
To compare, narcotic medications like Norco or Percocet induce a sudden release or flood of serotonin at one time causing a euphoria-like state of mind for a short while until all of the serotonin is taken back up into the neurons. Lexapro doesn't induce a massive influx or release of serotonin like narcotics do - the normal amount is still released. But only, say, half if it is immediately reabsorbed leaving a little more than normal in the 'sweet spot' for a little longer. This us what makes you feel better.
The more serotonin in this sweet spot is what makes you feel good (or better).
Hope this made sense. I can't believe this explanation hadn't been typed out in the 4 years as this thread has been around.
Please don’t spread extremely false information like you just did. Yes, Lexapro allows serotonin to linger in the brain longer and that’s the gist of how it works, but Norco, OxyContin, oxycodone, hydrocodone, etc have very limited effect on serotonin. Those drugs that all fall into the same class of narcotics does NOT get people high by elevating serotonin levels. You really shouldn’t spread false information like that. Especially because you made it seem like Lexapro could get someone high in the same way those narcotics do. They work in such a different manner it’s stunning ignorance at this level exists. Anyways OxyContin and all the other opiates flood your brain with DOPAMINE. Yes, some studies show they slightly increase serotonin, but the increase is marginal and doesn’t come anywhere close to the level Lexapro increases serotonin. Please please please, don’t make up lies about drugs anymore. It causes more placebo effects in people as well and could falsely cause people to think Lexapro gives a high like opiate narcotics.
I have been on lexopro for a long time end I never got high on that but every person is different so that's something that you need to talk to you doctor maybe lexopro is not for you best of luck
I've been on it a little less than a year the first three weeks were hell I felt sleepy never high just tired . My jaw clenched like crazy I felt nauseous and cranky . I stuck it through because the panic attacks crippled my life to agoraphobia . Three months in I noticed a huge change . From going from daily panic attacks to months without one is amazing !!! I use to have so many horrible thoughts and my attacks took me to the hospital . Now I'm out again living life driving ... my only complaint is major weight gain I workout and diet and still gained 10 pounds . I feel tired slot . I changed my medicine for 7 am instead of 7 pm and that made a huge difference for insomnia ( side effect ) and racing ( happens occasionally ).i suggest this to anyone with gad or panic disorder
everyone reacts differently to medications, but I never heard of getting high off an antidepressant. It is not one of the side effects.
When I started Lexapro 10 mg/day it felt very similar to getting high on ecstasy. Energized, uncontrollable laughter, but also nervous, sweaty hands and insomnia. This faded over the next three days. My doc had never heard of anyone with this reaction before, so I think its fairly uncommon. Most people instead feel low/depressed in the beginning.
On the other hand, Lexapro did nothing for me after those few days. Did not lift my mood, did not do anything positive, even tested higher dose five weeks later, still didn't do anything for me, just nasty side effects.
That sounds like a "manic" reaction, which oftentimes happens when someone could possibly be bipolar ll, and a manic reaction to an antidepressant can bring it to the forefront. Bipolar people oftentimes have a treatment resistant depression, and SSRI"S don't work well for them. Is your doctor a GP or a psychiatrist?
I want to know how this medicine make you feel once you start taking it
Cut the pill in half and just take 5 mg for 5 days. The most common side effect is loss of libido. I started taking lexapro to treat depression. Now I m depressed because I lost my libido. Will Wellbutrin be better?
Please do not continue on this medication. I am a pharmacist and I made the mistake of starting on lexapro. It is like a spiderweb... It won't let you off them once you start. Discontinuation syndrome has ruined my life... Twice. Bill
DO NOT take a SSRI unless you really need it. I went crazy was very careless, Lost my wife and went in debt doing crazy stuff like strip clubs and chasing trashy women.
I have been on Lexapro 10 MG for 4 months now and it has completely taking away my anxiety and panic attacks. I am so thankful my doctor prescribed me this medication. It has never made me feel high or weird. haven't had any major side effects.
Lexapro is an SSRI antidepressant. I've taken many of these types of antidepressants over the years and they do not make you high at all. It is not a controlled substance. It simply works on the chemicals in your brain to make you feel normal again. It helps with anxiety too. These drugs usually take about 2 weeks to feel any effects.
I would start by cutting them in half 5mg... for few days then go up to 10mg
that's what I'm doing, but I'm so impatient. Usually, nights are better but tonight for some reason I feel lonely and a bit afraid.
Well I just started on lexapro and on day 4 I was feeling fair, but today is day 5 and I'm feeling lonely and anxious. I dont want to take a xanax, for they put me to sleep and I wake up with panic. So I wait till im ready to fall asleep for the night and take xanax then. Hate this lonely feeling at night. Any suggestions?
I am taking cipralex at night 10 mg and didn't kick yet also I am taking Xanax 0.5 twice a day to make me feel relaxed and waiting for cipralex to kick in.
