Do I need certain supplements?
I'm very concerned. My scalp is visible.
I've been on levothyroxine for 3 months and I'm losing hair extremely bad. Is this the medication?

I too am taking levothyroxine 75mcg for hypothyroidism and I also take the supplement biotin..probably more than I should. I don't know what is too much but my hair still falls out but not as bad as it was before I started taking it. My scalp isn't showing that I know of but maybe try some Biotin? Good luck to you!!
I read where Biotin blocks the medication and that it's the lack of hormones that causes hair loss. I just went to the store, spoke with a pharmacist and was told to take Magnesium and Evening Primrose but take separately and with water.
Christy did you have the radioactive iodine to burn out the Thyroid? I did.
Oh no! Ive never heard of that about the biotin..GREAT! Lol... No ive never had the radiation done. Whats that like if u dont mind me asking?
Nothing to it at all really...
I just went and took a pill, had to stay away from everyone for 48 hours but I did a week just to be sure and then we waited and watched the blood work until it was where it needed to be for the Levothyroxine. My husband did everything needed. I wore gloves to touch things that he would touch. I have some great doctors in my opinion.
The reason I know about Biotin is because I'd done research on supplements and my daughter had suggested it.
Well thank you so much for all that info!! I will definitely ask my doctor about it! Good luck to you and Im so glad I know that about the Biotin, thank you so much!!!
You're more than welcome...
I wish you all the best hon. Life goes by so fast but we have to be sure to make the right choices. I've had a lot go on since 2008 and let me tell you a little because it brought me to research absolutely everything. After Hurricane Ivan hit here in Pensacola it brought fungus into the area. I got a fungus in my sinuses called Mucor. My doctor was treating me for allergies and I'd never had that. I fussed enough for her to send me to an ENT. He put my under to clean out whatever it was. It was back in two weeks. I'd researched my symptoms. When he wanted to put me under again I told him that I wanted fungus cultures taken. He said no that fungus does not grow that fast. We argued literally... He consented to do it. It came back Mucor. It's a flesh bone eating fungus. He apologized several times. I was sent to an infectious disease doctor that fought to combat it.
I've had 10 actual surgeries and then all the office procedures. They stripped the lining and took out bone etc. They worked hard to keep it from getting to my brain because there's only a paper thin bone between your sinus and brain. 9 months of IV Therapy and the nurses had to train to administer my meds because it's rare to use certain ones. I no longer have it
Oh my goodness..I live right outside Pensacola in Pace, I remember Ivan very well!! It was awful and for you to have to go through all of that! I remember to the mold problems. Oh my goodness I am so sorry!!! My doctor I use is in Milton, seems like she knows what shes talking about, I hope!! Well, thank you for sharing that with me and hope you can find some kind of relief from all the stress of it all! Good luck and God bless!!
Small world huh! That you're over in Pace. I have a daughter that works over there. Lives here but drives over there. I was told by one doctor that the Mucor was in the dirt. There was a man in an accident, thrown from the vehicle into the mud and lost both legs. He must of had an open wound for it to get in. My eye doctor told me that one of her patients was being treated for allergies and it was Mucor instead and it ate through that thin bone and got to his brain and killed him. I was also told that the Mucor is in the dirt from here to Louisiana . I don't know if it still is. I would imagine that it still is. I've warned friends with small children anyway. Can't be too safe right!
Thank you I'm fine. I keep God in the center of my life. I've always said that there is something good in something bad but we have to look for it. I'm stronger much stronger...
I have 3 grown children that have learned a lot also. I'm 59 and still looking through this beautiful world full of many good and bad things.
My infectious disease doctor is practicing in Gulfport, Mississippi so I drive over there to see him. He's amazing to say the least. There are many here but he's the best. His friend is my primary doctor. They are very informative and make you open your eyes and research more than you'd like but it's an eye opening experience. My ID doctor told me that I know more than most ENT's now... Hee Hee
I've split up my comments because it cuts off a lot when posted. Maybe it will come together. I was treated for my Thyroid by my primary doctor but I'm also under an Endocrinologist now. The thyroid has a lot of functions so for it to not work correctly it's affects other parts of the body. It's a life long thing so stay on top.
One thing affects another. My surgeries for the sinus caused more but it was needed to save my life. They had to make large open windows for this all to drain well. I now have bronchiectasis which is permanent bronchial and lung damage. It drained down. I have many doctors that work together and I'm fine. No oxygen machines or anything. I still have days just like everyone else. There are just certain things that can't happen. For example, at church if someone coughs I have to get away. I can be infected at 20 feet away. Everyone there knows not to hug me if they have even a sniffle.
My doctors help me in preventing any infections if possible. Well hon I will close. I'm always here if you'd like to talk about anything. Take care and stay informed. Always take your meds. Doing without can cause a chain reaction for something else. I know I know I sound like a mother hen. Just been through a lot and like to pass on what I find out.
Yes, small world! Well Im glad to hear that things are better in that regard. And your right you can never be too safe or careful!! Well, hopefully theres something you can figure to take to help with your hair growing back. I did look up about the biotin and I shouldve done that a long time ago. I guess my thinking was its a vitamin so its not going to hurt or affect anything, and Wow i was so wrong!! Thank you!
Good Afternoon
It's all a learning process. I do wish you all the best. I hope that the Evening Primrose and Magnesium that I've just started on will help with my hair loss. The pharmacist was very informative. On the Evening Primrose he said not to take it close to the Levothyroxine so I space it out from all medication. I only do one pill a day instead of 3 of the Primrose at least until I see how things are going. I also have begun washing my hair every other day instead of every day that I've done forever. Maybe I will lose less instead of handfulls. I'm also wondering if a better quality Vitamin would be better than the one I get at WalMart. Take Care and let me know how things go for you!!! It's a wait and see situation... Always here, good Lord willing...
Btw I've started on protein smoothies. It's a protein powder called Evolution. My daughter gets it over there in Pace. It's vanilla flavor. One scoop of protein, handful of frozen blueberries , handful of frozen strawberries, a little orange juice and ice. Oh a couple packets of Stevia. I have a smoothie a day! My daughter is big into her health so she told me that this is the best...
Oh wow, that sounds delish!!! Im definitely going to have to try that! Thank you!! Ive been trying to lose weight and get in shape here lately ans smoothies sound really good and healthy! Im about to be 40 in June so im just trying to get moving more and stay active and lose weight. But thank you again for telling me about that, i will have to mention it to my husband and get him on board as well!!
Good Morning
Here's a little stump in the road.
There are so many things in it I just noticed the Biotin.
She didn't know when she got this for me.
Let's put our heads together. If we are taking the Levothyroxine in the mornings with water, is it absorbed enough that the small amount of Biotin in the Evolution Smoothie in the afternoon would block any of the medicine??? This stuff tastes really really good and I hate to cut out something so healthy. It's so filling that it can be a meal replacement . My husband does not like healthy things (Hee Hee) but he even said that it tastes good. How often do we find something healthy that tastes good? I'm about to start some more research. I wish that my doctors appointment were sooner. I do have one with the rheumatologist next week. Maybe she'd know...
You're just a spring chicken honey. Yes start now, you won't regret it a bit...
Our daughter has been hanging tough with it for about 3 years and goes to the gym everyday after work. She meal preps on Sunday for the week. She said it's hard on Sunday but it makes the rest of the week for her family SO nice! Worth it! I'll let you know when and if I find out any thing more...
HEY
I did a little reading this morning.
I'm leaning more now towards at least spacing out the morning Levothyroxine and the Protein Smoothie by 8 hours. This gives it enough time to absorb in the stomach and get into the bloodstream to do it's thing. The body needs Biotin for many reasons. I'm going to fly with this until I see one of my doctors next week. I see my Infectious Disease doctor in June but if I see that I need to move it up then I will. I'm not worried about getting in sooner.
Talk with you later! Have a wonderful day!
Hi there
I've been doing research because I'm having another problem from the hypothyroidism.
Anyway, I thought of you and you may want to read about Hypothyroidism Secondary. It could be the Pituitary Gland causing the Hypothyroidism.
Just wanted to let you know that I ran across this.
Oh okay, thank you so much. I will have to look in to that!
